AP All-America team loaded with talent from Georgia

How much talent is there in the state of Georgia?

The AP released its All-America teams this week. There were six players from Georgia on them, and not one of them signed with UGA or Georgia Tech out of high school.

Not one — although Jarvis Jones of Carver-Columbus High School later transferred from USC to UGA.

What about the other five?

  • Chance Warmack, OG, Alabama, Westlake High School: Signed with Alabama over Auburn, South Carolina and Rutgers. No offer from UGA or Georgia Tech.
  • David Yankey, OT, Stanford, Centennial High School: He claimed early offers from both UGA and Georgia Tech, but it’s unclear how heavily either school recruited him. Yankey was serious about academics, and ended up picking Stanford over his other finalists of Duke, Wake Forest and South Carolina.
  • Kevin Minter, LB, LSU, Peachtree Ridge: Minter grew up a Georgia Tech fan, and that was the school where he attended his …

Trenton Brown: Ex-UGA football recruit will be playing for archrival Florida Gators

One of UGA’s former recruits will be playing for the archrival Florida Gators.

Trenton Brown, a 6-foot-8, 350-pound offensive lineman from Georgia Military junior college, revealed that he had committed to Florida over Oklahoma and Florida State this weekend. Brown had been secretly pledged to the Gators for a while, and finally went public on Sunday.

“It was because Florida’s faithfulness, and them being here with me throughout the whole process, even when I was committed to Georgia,” Brown told the AJC. “They’ve been with me since day one. They were the most faithful.”

UGA and Brown had a tumultuous recruiting relationship. He originally committed to the Bulldogs in August, but began to waiver after Brown said Florida’s coaches let him know that another recruit (5-star OL Laremy Tunsil) talked to UGA’s coaches and said Brown might be playing offensive guard there. (Note: Tunsil is being recruited by UGA to play tackle)

Georgia Tech may add another recruit or two

What’s the latest with Georgia Tech recruiting?

“Right now, we’re trying to get out and see all of our guys that are committed,” Paul Johnson told the AJC this week. “We were kind of late getting out because of the (ACC) championship game. So that’s kind of what we’re doing now.”
Georgia Tech has 15 commitments for 2013. There may not be much recruiting drama over the next couple of months because the Yellow Jackets just about filled all of their scholarship spots early.

“I think it’s fairly normal; we’re usually to the point in December where we have only a spot or two,” Johnson said. “That’s been the case most of the time (with our staff). Occasionally, something happens, and you add one here or there. You know, somebody decides they’re not going to play or not coming back. You might pick up one, and that could happen.

“We may still take another guy or two. We’ll just see how the numbers go.”

The impact of Notre Dame’s 12-0 season on Georgia recruits

Not everybody thinks it’s a foregone conclusion that Alabama will defeat Notre Dame for the national championship.

“I think Notre Dame is going to win – I do, but obviously I’m biased; If they don’t win, I still see it as an extremely close game,” said Isaac Rochell, the defensive end from Eagles Landing Christian Academy who is committed to the Irish.

Notre Dame’s undefeated regular season and appearance in the national championship game has very little of an immediate impact on the Irish’s recruiting efforts in the state of Georgia. The Irish have only one 2013 commitment from the state, Rochell. Within the last few months, Notre Dame entertained both Peach County WR Demarcus Robinson (committed to Clemson) and Tucker QB Juwaan Williams (undecided) for official visits.

If Notre Dame is going to capitalize in Georgia from this year, it will be in future years. The Irish are already …

Will Ja’Quay Williams consider Auburn again?

New Texas A&M WR commit Ja'Quay Williams

New Texas A&M WR commit Ja'Quay Williams

The family of Ja’Quay Williams likes Auburn’s hiring of Gus Malzahn.

But it’s unlikely that the star wide receiver will be signing with the Tigers again.

Williams committed to Texas A&M over UGA and South Carolina on Sunday after backing off his longtime pledge to Auburn a couple of weeks ago. The former Sandy Creek High School standout is attending prep school this semester, and he hopes to enroll at Texas A&M in January.

“I think that’s a smart move to hire Coach Malzahn,” said JaQuay’s uncle and legal guardian, Kevin Ofchus. “I think it makes you wonder why they let go of him in the first place. I guess that will be the big question, you know.

“It tells you that there’s a lot of dysfunction. One year, you get rid of both of your coordinators. The next year, you get your rid of your head coach and bring back your offensive coordinator again. One thing that you want — one thing that rock-solid programs have – is continuity. It’s really …

Georgia Tech signs Top 10 class for baseball

Georgia Tech baseball coach Danny Hall has announced that 16 student-athletes have signed their National Letters of Intent during the early-signing period to play for the ACC Champion Yellow Jackets next season.

Georgia Tech signs trio of in-state stars

Georgia Tech softball signed four of the five high school softball players to join the Yellow Jackets in 2014, coach Sharon Perkins announced Tuesday. Of the four student-athletes to commit to Tech, three are from Georgia and one from Florida. The fifth recruit for 2014 will sign her NLI this spring.

The recruiting class includes Jessica Kowalewicz (Stone Mountain, Ga.), Samantha Pierannunzi (Lawrenceville, Ga.), Alexis Jones (Columbus, Ga.) and Colleen Darragh (St. Johns, Fla.).

“Overall, this is a very athletic signing class that can impact a game in many ways,” Perkins said. “I am extremely pleased to continue the Gwinnett County-to-Georgia Tech pipeline. Metro Atlanta is one of the nation’s hotbeds for softball and that is our program’s goal to continually bring in local players.

“All of these student-athletes are great fits for Georgia Tech academically as well. Each one of them fits in well with the tremendous team chemistry that already exists. Each player has competed …

Ja’Quay Williams: Top UGA target officially de-commits from Auburn (UPDATED)

  • UPDATED: South Carolina is “in the mix,” his uncle said on Wednesday.

One of UGA’s top remaining targets, WR Ja’Quay Williams, de-committed from Auburn on Sunday night, his legal guardian told the AJC.

WR Ja'Quay Williams took an official visit this weekend to UGA, which is considered his new frontrunner (AJC)

The 6-foot-3, 200-pounder from Sandy Creek High School took an official visit to UGA this weekend.

“Texas A&M, Georgia, Florida, Mississippi State are on the current list,” said Kevin Ofchus, his uncle and legal guardian. “And Auburn is still in the mix.”

“Like a lot of kids, we’re just waiting to see how things pan out with which specific coach it is (hired at Auburn). Until things get figured out over there, Ja’Quay needs to do his due diligence and research where he wants to go.”

Last February, Williams signed with Auburn after almost switching to UGA at the last minute.

However, Williams became a free agent again this year after not meeting NCAA academic …

Two of Auburn’s top football recruits to visit UGA this weekend (UPDATED)

Recruiting never stops for anything, not even holidays.

For Thanksgiving weekend, there is plenty of action going on between recruits and colleges:

Mark Richt has two high-prized Auburn recruits scheduled to visit this weekend (AJC)

  • UGA is expecting Reuben Foster to make an unofficial visit for Saturday’s Georgia Tech game, which Foster confirmed to the AJC. The 4-star linebacker from LaGrange is committed to Auburn but still flirting with UGA. For the Bulldogs, it will be important that Foster does indeed appear at Saturday’s game, with his own team at Auburn (Ala.) High School in a playoff game on late Friday night.
  • Another Auburn commitment, WR Ja’Quay Williams is scheduled to take an official visit to UGA this weekend. Williams signed with Auburn over the Bulldogs after a fierce battle last year, but did not satisfy NCAA requirements and is spending this fall at prep school. Williams was the state’s No. 1 prospect at WR last year and is considered better than any of the …

Recruiting Diary: New Missouri QB commit Eddie Printz (Vol. V)

Some of Atlanta’s college football prospects will be writing a weekly diary for the AJC until February’s signing day. They will be sharing their thoughts, opinions, adventures and perspectives on the recruiting journey.

Eddie Printz led Lassiter High School to a 10-0 regular season and No. 1 ranking in Class AAAAAA. Lassiter was upset by Brookwood in the first round of the state playoffs. Last month, Printz verbally committed to Missouri while on his official visit. Printz initially committed to SMU more than a year ago, then later switched to UCLA last January. In September, Printz said he was told by UCLA that his scholarship offer would no longer be honored. After being on the open market for around a month, Printz was picked up by Missouri.

Losing stinks. Congratulations Brookwood. That’s all I have to say about the playoff game. I know only one out of 32 teams finishes with a win. I get it but I don’t like it when it happens to my team. I love my Lassiter teammates …
