Georgia is one of the nation’s top five states in producing college football players: Around 200 of the state’s high school seniors will sign with FBS schools in February.

Despite the big numbers, there are still plenty of prospects that get overlooked. We’ll take a look at some of them over the next month.

One guy to watch is LB Chase Alford of Heritage High School in Conyers.

Alford got two big honors within the last week: He was named Defensive MVP of the East team in an all-star football game at the Georgia Dome, and was also named Region 8-AAAAA Defensive Player of the Year.

The 6-foot-2, 235-pounder will also play in two more all-star games, including the North-South game on Dec. 29.

Alford has gotten overlooked by college scouts, and some of it has to do with playing football in Rockdale County, which is becoming more known for its football each year.

He’s a stellar student with a 4.01 GPA, and his older brother walked on at Georgia Tech.

The younger …

Georgia OL Eric Smith commits to Virginia

Columbia High School offensive tackle Eric Smith said he committed to Virginia on Friday.

The 6-foot-6, 275-pounder said he picked Virginia over offers from Alabama State, North Carolina, Florida International, Georgia State and Jacksonville State, among others.

“It was just the overall feeling I got from the coaches, the football program and academics at Virginia,” Smith told the AJC.

Smith was on the radar with a lot of teams, making unofficial visits to North Carolina, Auburn, Georgia and Jacksonville State. He decided to go ahead and commit without taking any official visits.

“The pressure was on me; they (Virginia) didn’t pressure me, though,” Smith said. “The fact is that time was winding down. I knew my spot could be filled by another athlete. I felt like I might as well commit because Virginia was the school I liked the most and had the best vibe about.”

Smith, who is the starting center for Columbia’s basketball team, has a 3.2 GPA.

Montravius Adams, who is ranked as the nation’s No. 2 overall prospect by 247sports, will take one of his last recruiting trips before signing day to UGA.

The 6-foot-3, 300-pound defensive tackle from Dooly County High School has selected four of his five official visits, according to his coach Jimmy Hughes. Adams will go to:

  • Florida after the Under Armour game on Jan. 6
  • Clemson on Jan. 11
  • Alabama on Jan. 18
  • UGA on Jan. 25
  • TBA for Feb. 1

What about UGA? “My mom really likes Georgia, and they’re my hometown school,” Adams told the AJC on Wednesday. “I really like the coaches. I know their coaches aren’t about to leave. Their coaches are stable, which means they don’t leave a lot, like some of the other schools. Also, at Georgia, you can get a great education.”

Adams was also asked about a Dawg247 report that Rodney Garner, who is both UGA’s recruiting coordinator and defensive line coach, is a …

Demarcus Robinson: AJC Super 11 WR switches again, picks Clemson

In recruiting, there’s the initial commitment and flip. The rarest? A double flip.

AJC Super 11 WR Demarcus Robinson of Peach County High School completed the double flip on Monday when he switched his commitment for a second time, this time going from Florida to Clemson after returning from an official visit with the Gators over the weekend, according to his coach.

Robinson, who is considered one of the state’s top prospects at his position, originally committed to Clemson but switched to Florida last week after an in-home visit last week with the Gators coaches, including Will Muschamp.

Despite losing Robinson, Clemson never gave up, dispatching several assistants to meet with the 4-star wide receiver last week.

Florida will have a tough time convincing Robinson to switch for a third time since Sunday night was the end of the NCAA’s contact …

Onetime UGA and Georgia Tech OL target, Delando Crooks, committed to Vanderbilt on Sunday night.

“Vanderbilt has always been high on his list,” his uncle, Troy Vaccianna, told the AJC. “He has been to North Carolina and Purdue. They are both pretty good programs … but there was a comfort level with Vanderbilt from day one.”

Crooks decided to go ahead and commit to Vanderbilt before taking an official visit with the Commodores. However, he had checked out the SEC East twice — last summer and then again for the emotional win over Tennessee.

“He’s going on vacation to Jamaica on Monday, and he wanted to go ahead and get it over with,” his uncle said. “That way, he could enjoy his vacation without thinking about football. He’s in a good place with …

There’s also Walton High School’s Tyren Jones, who is committed to Alabama, but his senior season – and his team’s championship hopes — ended abruptly after a knee injury.

The 5-foot-10, 195-pound Kamara is another one in the pipeline of prospects out of Norcross, the Gwinnett County powerhouse.

“He can just do so many things,” Norcross coach Keith Maloof said. “He can catch the ball out of the backfield and had a 65-yard scoring reception (in the semifinals). He threw a touchdown pass (in the quarterfinals) … The kid can do just about anything you ask him …

Georgia Tech RB commit Travis Custis collects accolades

Alabama is one of several colleges taking a look at RB Travis Custis, who is committed to Georgia Tech.

The 6-foot, 205-pounder from Lovejoy High School has had a breakout senior season: Custis has rushed for 2,058 yards and 35 touchdowns while leading Lovejoy to the state championship game for the second year in a row.

How good is Custis? His coach says he is better than Tashard Choice, the former Lovejoy RB who starred at Georgia Tech and now plays for the NFL’s Buffalo Bills.

“We’ve had a lot of good football players at Lovejoy High School, and (Custis) is the best one we’ve had,” Lovejoy’s Al Hughes said. “He broke all of Tashard’s (rushing) records last year, and he’s working on his own records this year.”

How does Custis compare to Tashard? “He’s a better football player overall. First of all he’s bigger and faster. Statistically, he’s broken all of Tashard’s records.”

Like with any elite prospect, Custis will be recruited by other colleges until …

The 5-foot-9, 160-pound cornerback will lead Sandy Creek High School against Ridgeland for the Class AAAA state championship at 5:30 p.m. Saturday at the Georgia Dome.

Wiggins has been committed to UGA for nearly a year and is still being heavily pursued by other colleges. Next month, Wiggins is scheduled to take official visits to South Carolina, Florida, Ole Miss and Texas A&M. The Gamecocks are considered UGA’s biggest competitor.

“Yes, I’m still committed to Georgia but I’m looking at other opportunities,” Wiggins told the AJC. “This is a real hard decision for me. It has become real hard for me right now. I really don’t know who to believe. I’m just going through the process slowly.”

Vonn Bell: Decision could be near for 5-star safety

Over the last few months, the recruiting process has taken a backseat to high school football for Vonn Bell, the 5-star safety from Ridgeland.

All of that will change after Saturday when Ridgeland plays Sandy Creek for the Class AAAA state championship at 5:30 p.m.

After Saturday, Bell will listen to the sales pitches and maybe visit his three finalists of Alabama, Ohio State and childhood favorite Tennessee. UGA was eliminated when Bell trimmed from seven to three schools.

“Nothing has changed with recruiting recently, and Vonn isn’t talking to anybody about it until after Saturday,” Ridgeland coach Mark Mariakis told the AJC.

“About halfway through our season, he cut it off to focus on our team, which we appreciated. It has worked out well for Vonn.

“After our season is over on Saturday, I think it will be soon that he will make his decision between those three schools.”

Bell has had a monster senior season for Ridgeland, and surprisingly …

Isaac Rochell and Keyante Green lead ELCA into finals

Published at 3 p.m. Thursday

Eagle’s Landing Christian Academy will have two of the state’s college football prospects at their respective positions when it plays for the Class A Private School state championship at 2:30 p.m. Friday at the Georgia Dome.

Isaac Rochell is a 6-foot-4, 250-pound defensive end who committed to Notre Dame over Florida State and UGA, among others: “He’s a tremendous athlete in a huge body,” ELCA coach Jonathan Gess told the AJC. “He can do anything. He could probably play quarterback or linebacker. He has that kind of athletic ability. The key thing about him is that he’s such a great leader. He’s just an amazing guy.” Rochell missed four games with an injury. He has 41 tackles, including 8 tackles for losses and 3 sacks. At tight end, Rochell averages 3 pancake blocks per game and has a 93-percent blocking grade.

There are so many good tailbacks in Georgia this year that some forget about Keyante Green, the 5-9, 190-pounder who has rushed for 1,203 …
