The state of Georgia has three basketball stars that are ranked among the nation’s top 25 overall college prospects — Shiloh High School’s Robert Carter, Southwest DeKalb’s Shaq Goodwin and Miller Grove’s Tony Parker. The threesome, who all play power forward, have been dubbed “The Big Three” by college recruiters.

The best chance for both UGA and Georgia Tech in keeping at least one member of “The Big Three” at home for college appears to be Robert Carter.

The 6-foot-9, 250-pounder took an official visit to UGA over the weekend, and will make a recruiting trip to Georgia Tech on Friday. Carter will also visit Florida, Florida State and either Kentucky or Maryland within the next few weeks.

When asked to rank his UGA trip on a 1-10 scale, Carter said, “It was up there. It was in the 8, 9 or 10 range. Well, I couldn’t really tell because …

Top Auburn recruit plans visits to FSU, LSU … and maybe UGA

Auburn DB commit Josh Holsey, the AJC Super 11 DB from Creekside High School (AJC)

Auburn DB commit Josh Holsey, the AJC Super 11 DB from Creekside High School (AJC)

There’s something about former Creekside High School football stars attending games that brings out the best in Josh Holsey, the AJC Super 11 selection who may be the state’s No. 1 cornerback.

Eric Berry, the NFL defensive back for the Kansas City Chiefs, gave a rousing pep talk to Creekside before Saturday’s game and then sat in the stands to watch Holsey score thrice in a win over Riverdale, including an interception return and two touchdown catches.

Last week, with Florida State safety Terrance Parks watching on, Holsey scored five touchdowns in the 45-7 win over Forest Park. The TD breakdown: 2 catches, 2 runs out of the Wildcat formation and a kickoff return.

Parks was so blown away by Holsey’s dominating presence that he went back to FSU and raved to his coaches about Holsey, who committed to Auburn. Evidently, FSU’s coaches liked what they heard because they are in now hot …

UGA is still heavily recruiting two of the state’s top prospects at linebacker, even though they are committed to other schools.

Markuss Eligwe, the first-ever AJC Super 11 selection from Stone Mountain High School, has been committed to Florida State since last spring but said he will take an official visit to UGA and possibly Florida. The 6-foot-3, 223-pound Eligwe is a candidate to be the state’s No. 1 overall prospect.

Raphael Kirby of Stephenson High School is a longtime Miami commitment but re-opened communications with other schools after massive allegations of NCAA rules violations surrounded the Hurricanes. Kirby announced he will take official visits to Vanderbilt (Saturday), Miami (Oct. 22), Florida (Nov. 5) and South Carolina (Nov. 19), along with deciding between UGA and Southern California for his fifth and final recruiting trip later this week.

Both Eligwe and Kirby …

Kurt Freitag, one of the state’s top college football prospects at tight end, may be close to making his college decision.

The 6-foot-3, 245-pounder from Buford High School has made official visits to two of his three finalists, Alabama and Florida. He will decide later this week about scheduling a recruiting trip to Florida State.

Freitag took his official visit to Alabama for the Arkansas game. Freitag’s teammate at Buford, linebacker Dillon Lee, is committed to Alabama, while another – offensive lineman Vadal Alexander – has the Crimson Tide as a finalist, along with LSU and Auburn.

“Alabama made it perfectly clear how much they want and need Kurt to be part of the team and school; he left with a very good impression of fitting in,” his mother said.

Freitag saw Alabama play again last weekend during his official visit to Florida, which he also enjoyed.

Brice Ramsey, UGA’s quarterback of the future, can play a little kicker, too.

The junior quarterback from Camden County had one of the top 10 longest field goals in the history of Georgia high school football on Friday. Ramsey, who committed early to UGA, booted a 57-yarder in the 58-0 win over Bradwell Institute.

“He actually kicked one earlier that was 57 yards but was wide right,” Camden County coach Jeff Herron told the AJC. “He had plenty of distance on that one and he told me when he came off the field ‘You give me another chance, Coach, and I will make it.’

“Lo and behold, with two minutes at the end of the half, we got to the same location. It was fourth down and a mile. Brice got up there and drilled it. It hit the fence behind the goalpost. It had another 7-8 yards for sure.”

What about Brice at …

Basketball: Robert Carter lists Kentucky, FSU, Georgia Tech, UGA among favorites

This year’s crop of Georgia college basketball prospects is led by “The Big 3” – three power forwards from the Atlanta area that are all ranked among the nation’s top 25 overall players.

You know about Southwest DeKalb’s Shaq Goodwin, who lists UGA, Florida, Memphis, and Alabama as his leaders. UGA and Memphis are the rumored frontrunners.

You know about Miller Grove’s Tony Parker, who made an official visit to Ohio State last weekend, and has recruiting trips planned for Duke and UCLA.

The “mystery guy” of the Big 3 is Robert Carter, and that’s because he played at Thomasville High School before transferring to Gwinnett County’s Shiloh High School for his senior year.

Courtcred.com’s Corey Cooper had an interesting perspective on Carter:

Last weekend, I attended a personal workout with Carter and his trainer Kierre Jordan.  Some college coaches from a D1 program out west were in the building but not to see Robert Carter, and their first question to me …

How does UGA’s 0-2 start affect football recruiting?

The Bulldogs have 14 players committed to sign football scholarships with the team in February, along with four high school juniors pledged the sign with UGA the following year.

Many of Georgia’s commitments made unofficial visits to Georgia for Saturday’s 45-42 loss to South Carolina, including 5-star offensive lineman John Theus of Jacksonville and Thomson High School defensive tackle John John Atkins (UGA’s most recent commit). As far as junior prospects, Camden County QB Brice Ramsey, Newnan safety Tray Matthews, and Goose Creek (S.C) wide receiver Tramal Terry – both early commitments to UGA — were among …

Brice Ramsey, UGA’s QB of the future, is 2-0 … Who is JJ Green??

2013 UGA QB recruit Brice Ramsey of Camden County HS

UGA’s QB of the future has led his team to a pair of wins in the first two starts of his high school career.

Brice Ramsey, the junior quarterback at Camden County High School who has committed to UGA, completed 3 of 6 passes for 18 yards in a 23-14 win over Ohio’s Glenville in Monday’s nationally televised game on ESPNU.

“Brice did a great job, managed the game really well and did what we asked him to do,” Camden County coach Jeff Herron told the AJC. “We went into that game with the idea of not putting too much pressure on him, and we didn’t want to get him in bad situations. We were going to let the defense and special teams take care of things, and that’s what happened.

“Certainly, as the season wears on, Brice is going to be a bigger part of our offense. But Monday wasn’t the day. We would’ve had a hard time pass-blocking those guys.”

Francis Kallon, transfer from England, makes Georgia Tech look smart with dominating start

Francis Kallon is making Georgia Tech look smart with its decision to both offer a football scholarship and accept a commitment before the transfer from London, England, had ever played in organized game of football.

The 6-foot-6, 240-pound Kallon has dominated in his first two games with Central Gwinnett High School, which plays in Georgia’s largest classification. Kallon has 19 total tackles, 6 tackles for losses, 2 sacks, 2 fumble recoveries and a blocked punt.

So much, so fast. After moving from England, Francis Kallon has learned the sport of football at a rapid pace. The 6-foot-6, 240-pound DE is committed to Georgia Tech (AJC photo by Michael Carvell)

“I couldn’t be happier about how quickly Francis has adapted,” Central Gwinnett coach Todd Wofford told the AJC. “If you watch his film or watch him play on Friday night, you could never tell that he has never played football before prior to this season. I mean, he’s dominating.”
