Stephenson High School RB Mike Davis liked Thursday’s recruiting trip to UGA so much that he plans to come back in January for an official visit.

When asked to rate Thursday’s trip on a scale of 1-10, Davis said, “I’d give it a 10. I was really impressed. They really showed that they wanted me, they really need running backs, and I think I could fit in very well in their offense. It was good visit, they want me to come back for an official visit, and I’m planning on going back there on Jan. 28.”

The 5-foot-9, 200-pound Davis, who de-committed from the Florida last week after being pledged to the Gators for around a year, got the royal treatment during his four-hour tour UGA on Thursday.

After arriving on campus, Davis attended a meeting between UGA assistant Bryan McClendon and the team’s running backs. When practice started, Davis said he spent the entire session next to …

Will it be Georgia Tech or UGA for Robert Carter?

He’s the 6-foot-9, 250-pound power forward from Shiloh High School who is ranked among the nation’s top 25 overall basketball prospects.

Carter is scheduled to announce his college decision at 5 p.m. Thursday at Stats Restaurant. Carter is reportedly torn between the two in-state schools, Georgia Tech and UGA. He took official visits within the last month to both schools, along with Florida. Don’t count out the Gators in the chase for Carter.

Georgia Tech has a few things in its favor. When Carter made his recruiting trip with the Yellow Jackets on Oct. 22, he arranged it where he would be visiting the campus at the same time as Georgia Tech’s two signees, North Gwinnett guard Chris Bolden and North Clayton swingman Marcus Hunt. They all got to be good friends while playing basketball on the AAU circuit.

Another good sign …

The state of Georgia has three of the top 25 overall college prospects in the nation with Miller Grove’s Tony Parker, Southwest DeKalb’s Shaq Goodwin and Shiloh’s Robert Carter.

Wednesday was the first day of the NCAA’s early signing period, and Carter is tentatively scheduled to announce between Georgia Tech and UGA, among others, at 5 p.m. Thursday.

What about Parker and Goodwin? They may wait until April’s late signing period.

Duke and Ohio State are considered the frontrunners for the 6-foot-9, 270-pound Tony Parker, who also took official visits to UCLA and Memphis.

“Tony is probably signing late,” Miller Grove High School coach Sharman White told the AJC on Wednesday.

After school on Wednesday, Parker texted “I’m not signing this week.” We asked Parker if that meant next week, too, with the signing period ending next Wednesday, and we’re waiting to hear back. He …

It was no surprise on Tuesday when one recruiting service came out with its rankings for the nation’s top high school juniors, and Robert Nkemdiche was at the very top of the list.

The 6-foot-5, 270-pound defensive end from Grayson High School was rated No. 1 in the country for the class of 2013 by 247sports. Nkemdiche has denied longtime rumors that he is a “secret commitment” to Alabama. His only unofficial visit this season was to last week’s game at Alabama. He is officially considering Florida and LSU, along with Alabama.

The bigger surprise was that another junior from Georgia was ranked No. 2 overall in the country – Troup County linebacker Reuben Foster, who is officially committed to Alabama but also still talking with UGA, Auburn and Florida.

“It was really a tough decision among the people that decided between Robert and Reuben,” said Rusty Mansell of …

Where was UGA offensive coordinator Mike Bobo when the Bulldogs were off this past weekend?

He traveled to South Georgia to personally scout UGA’s quarterback of the future, Brice Ramsey, the junior from Camden County High School who committed to the Bulldogs last summer.

Georgia Tech took its best shot at landing one of the state’s “Big Three” basketball prospects over the weekend.

Robert Carter, a 6-foot-9, 250-pound power forward from Shiloh High School, made an official visit to Georgia Tech over the weekend after taking a recruiting trip to UGA last week. Carter is one member of the “Big Three” — three Atlanta area seniors ranked among the nation’s top 25 overall prospects, a special group which also includes Southwest DeKalb’s Shaq Goodwin and Miller Grove’s Tony Parker.

When asked to rate his Georgia Tech trip on a scale of 1-10, Carter said, “I had a good time at Georgia Tech. I enjoyed spending time with the coaches and players, and I like the direction that coach [Brian Gregory] is taking the program. I don’t know if I could really rate it, though.” After pausing for a few seconds, Carter said, “I’d probably give it a 9.”

The best chance for both UGA and Georgia Tech in keeping at least one member of “The Big Three” at home for college appears to be Robert Carter.

The 6-foot-9, 250-pounder took an official visit to UGA over the weekend, and will make a recruiting trip to Georgia Tech on Friday. Carter will also visit Florida, Florida State and either Kentucky or Maryland within the next few weeks.

When asked to rank his UGA trip on a 1-10 scale, Carter said, “It was up there. It was in the 8, 9 or 10 range. Well, I couldn’t really tell because that was my first official visit. …

There’s something about former Creekside High School football stars attending games that brings out the best in Josh Holsey, the AJC Super 11 selection who may be the state’s No. 1 cornerback.

Eric Berry, the NFL defensive back for the Kansas City Chiefs, gave a rousing pep talk to Creekside before Saturday’s game and then sat in the stands to watch Holsey score thrice in a win over Riverdale, including an interception return and two touchdown catches.

The 6-foot-3, 245-pounder from Buford High School has made official visits to two of his three finalists, Alabama and Florida. He will decide later this week about scheduling a recruiting trip to Florida State.

Brice Ramsey, UGA’s quarterback of the future, can play a little kicker, too.

The junior quarterback from Camden County had one of the top 10 longest field goals in the history of Georgia high school football on Friday. Ramsey, who committed early to UGA, booted a 57-yarder in the 58-0 win over Bradwell Institute.

“He actually kicked one earlier that was 57 yards but was wide right,” Camden County coach Jeff Herron told the AJC. “He had plenty of distance on that one and he told me when he came off the field ‘You give me another chance, Coach, and I will make it.’

“Lo and behold, with two minutes at the end of the half, we got to the same location. It was fourth down and a mile. Brice got up there and drilled it. It hit the fence behind the goalpost. It had another 7-8 yards for sure.”

What about Brice at QB? On Friday, Ramsey completed 6 of 11 passes for 138 yards and …

Alabama and Georgia Tech are the frontrunners for Henry County defensive end Dalvin Tomlinson, who is a candidate to be Georgia’s No. 1 overall college football prospect for 2012.

The 6-foot-3, 255-pounder is an AJC Super 11 selection and has around 20+ early scholarship offers, with Florida, Clemson and Indiana filling out the rest of his top five. Tomlinson, who is a two-time state champion in wrestling, has a 3.8 GPA.

“Dalvin is relentless,” Henry County coach Mike Rozier said. “He is at full tilt every play, and looks like he never takes a play off. He goes both ways for us and his motor is always running. The college scouts always talk about that when they watch his film. You just don’t see many high school kids that are relentless and have a motor like him.”

Tomlinson made a recruiting trip to Alabama on Saturday and nearly committed.

“I was tempted to do it,” …

Georgia’s top available college basketball prospect on the perimeter, Marcus Hunt, committed to Georgia Tech on Friday.

The 6-foot-5, 210-pounder from North Clayton High School picked Georgia Tech among his eight finalists of UGA, Alabama, Florida, Florida State, Louisville, West Virginia, and Virginia Tech. Hunt will play both shooting guard and small forward in college.

“Georgia Tech, they got one of the top recruits in the state, as well as the country,” North Clayton basketball coach Martisse Troup told the AJC. “I feel like Marcus will do well at Georgia Tech. We have had a couple of football players from North Clayton go on to Georgia Tech. I think Marcus is going to do well at Georgia Tech.”

“Anything Georgia Tech asks Marcus to do, he will take care it. Any challenge you give him, he will do it. It’s unbelievable how well-rounded his game is.”

UGA has a shot at the nation’s No. 1-ranked running back.

Keith Marshall of Raleigh, N.C., said UGA will be one of his three official visits, along with Notre Dame and Florida, he announced via Twitter.

The 5-foot-11, 195-pounder will make his recruiting trip for UGA’s game against South Carolina on Sept. 10.

What about Isaiah Crowell at UGA? Wouldn’t that scare off any top RB prospect from even considering UGA? Surprisingly, the answer is “no” from Marshall, as Crowell’s presence is actually a positive. Marshall explained his perspective recently to UGASports/Rivals.com’s Radi Nabulsi:

“I do not want to be the only guy. I would love to play with another back because I do not want to take a beating.
Auburn landed one of Georgia’s top college football prospects for 2013 on Monday, and they took advantage of some inside position to do it.

Central Gwinnett High School junior linebacker Trey Johnson committed to Auburn over Florida, Florida State, Clemson, Tennessee and South Carolina among his 24 early scholarship offers.

“Obviously being the national champion, Auburn has a great football program; Trey wanted to play for a winning program,” Central Gwinnett coach Todd Wofford told the AJC.

Another advantage Auburn had was with the coach recruiting Johnson — Ted Roof, the Auburn defensive coordinator who played football at Central Gwinnett before later starring at Georgia Tech. “Trey and Coach Roof really have a great friendship.
Charles Mann, who is considered state’s No. 1 college basketball prospect at point guard, committed to UGA over Florida State on Friday.

“The most important thing about UGA is that it’s close to home, so my friends and family can watch me play,” Mann told the AJC. “It was down to Georgia and Florida State. Georgia has two point guards leaving after this season, giving me a great chance to come in and start. I’ve built a great relationship with the coaches, and I felt like Georgia was the best place for me.”

The 6-foot-5, 193-pound Mann picked UGA out of 24 offers, which also included reigning NCAA champion UConn. Mann averaged 22 points as a junior at Union Grove High School. This summer, he transferred to Milton High School for his senior year.

Keithon Redding, a wide receiver from Columbia High School, said he committed to Tennessee on Friday afternoon.

“I called the coaches and told them ‘I want to be a Vol,’” Redding told the AJC. “I like Tennessee because of the coaches and because it’s not too far away from home.”

The 6-foot-1, 195-pounder said he was also considering Central Florida and Alabama. He said he decided to commit to Tennessee after attending Florida State’s camp.

“I had been wanting to commit to Tennessee for a while,” Redding said. “I had been talking to Florida State, and they wanted me to come down to camp so they could see me in person. I talked to the wide receivers coach, and he sounded like he was really interested in me. But I wasn’t sure if they had offered. It was kind of confusing.”

Redding said he has been clocked in the 40-yard dash at 4.5 seconds.

Strangely, Georgia’s quarterback of the future has yet to start a high school game.

Brice Ramsey is a rising junior who is still waiting to make a name for himself at Camden County High School. But the tall, lanky kid with the high-powered arm already has the stamp of approval from college scouts.

The 6-foot-4, 190-pound Ramsey ended an intense recruiting battle when he committed to Georgia at “Dawg Night” camp last weekend. Ramsey, who had early scholarship offers from Florida, Florida State and Clemson, was expected to double or triple his stack of offers within the next few months if he hadn’t pledged.

Some are left to wonder how can a quarterback who has yet to start in high school be so highly regarded?

Mark Richt has seen a lot in his 10 seasons as UGA’s football coach.

He’s never had a recruiting moment like Friday night.

Four players committed at the same time at UGA’s “Dawg Night” prospect camp (This was a “package deal” unlike any other … four players from four different high schools, from three different states).

John Theus, a 5-star offensive lineman from Jacksonville, and a trio of 2013 recruits — Camden County QB Brice Ramsey, WR-DB Tramel Terry of Goose Creek, S.C., and RB Derrick Henry of Yulee, Fla. — all huddled around Richt and pledged at the same time (and a fifth one committed later in the night).

Four? Maybe four on the same day. Maybe. But four at the same time? What?

Ramsey explained how it went down:

He said Theus was one of the first people he saw after reporting to UGA on Friday. ”Theus talked to me, and whispered that he was going to probably …

Buford High School linebacker Dillon Lee, who has committed to Alabama, proved that he is among the nation’s top athletes over the weekend.

Lee finished in the top 10 of the SPARQ Rating National Championship at “The Opening” — Nike’s new summer training competition that features some of the country’s top college football prospects. In the SPARQ contest, the rising high school seniors are tested in the 40-yard dash, vertical jump, 20-yard shuttle, and throwing the power ball.

Lee led the entire field after two events, and ended up finishing 8th overall. In the preliminary round scores, Lee was clocked in the 40-yard dash at 4.66 seconds and had a 35.6-inch vertical jump.

Lee is the younger brother of UGA offensive lineman Dallas Lee, and committed to Alabama over Florida State and UGA (click on story link).

Georgia’s No. 1 college football prospect at quarterback, Greyson Lambert, is nearly fully recovered from a leg injury that sidelined him for three months and is sprinting through schools on the recruiting trail.

Lambert made unofficial visits to South Carolina and N.C. State last weekend. He plans to make recruiting trips to Alabama, South Carolina, Florida, FSU — and maybe a few other schools — in July.

The 6-foot-6, 195-pounder from Wayne County High School said he has nine early offers: Alabama, South Carolina, Miami, N.C. State, Virginia, Louisville, Purdue, Boston College and Mississippi State. He also had early offers from UGA and Clemson which are no longer available (see below).

Nearly every elite quarterback commits before his senior season, but Lambert is unsure.

“That all kind of got pushed back with the whole leg thing; With not being able to visit many schools in June, I might wait …
