Georgia Tech and UGA may have to use the home-state connections to get a big and bright red Chick-fila-A built on the center of campus.

It may be a pretty big deal in college football recruiting.

A linebacker from Birmingham, Ala., who is now dubbed “The Chick-fil-A recruit” selected Auburn over Clemson to both attend college and play football — partly because of the fast-food restaurant that has its headquarters in Atlanta.

Cassanova McKinzy of Birmingham, Ala., signed with Auburn on Wednesday and gave some of the reasons for his choice to a local TV station:

“(It was) kind of the environment and plus they had no Chick-fil-A on campus. You had to go like, probably like 15 minutes off campus to go to like a real restaurant. Their café was kind of small.”

Here’s the link the video.

Who knew that food was so important in recruiting? Then again, one of UGA’s top recruits, 4-star tailback Todd Gurley out of Tarboro, N.C., couldn’t stop talking about the food at …

Fair or unfairly, UGA caught some criticism for being “too late” to offer some of the state’s top football prospects this year.

The Bulldogs may be trying to counter that perception for next year’s class.

On Thursday, UGA recruiting coordinator Rodney Garner made a personal appearance at Dooly County High School, which is located 60 miles south of Macon. That’s a big deal when the Bulldogs still have to fill 10 or so scholarships for this year’s class.

Garner was there to make a verbal scholarship offer to Dooly County High School defensive tackle Montravius Adams, the 6-foot-4, 280-pounder who is rapidly emerging as one of the state’s top 10 prospects for 2013 after his dominating performances at last …

Stephenson High School RB Mike Davis liked Thursday’s recruiting trip to UGA so much that he plans to come back in January for an official visit.

When asked to rate Thursday’s trip on a scale of 1-10, Davis said, “I’d give it a 10. I was really impressed. They really showed that they wanted me, they really need running backs, and I think I could fit in very well in their offense. It was good visit, they want me to come back for an official visit, and I’m planning on going back there on Jan. 28.”

(Lots of breaking news of Marshall: Please check at the bottom for the most current updates)

What if Keith Marshall does not pick UGA on Tuesday?

It would be a recruiting nightmare for the Bulldogs. Even the idea that the nation’s No. 1 RB is seriously considering alternatives ignites panic attacks among masses of UGA supporters.

Marshall is the “make-it-or-break” recruit for UGA’s 2012 class. The speedster from Raleigh, N.C., is the guy that the Bulldogs have to get. Why is that? Because of ongoing RB problems and an emergency-level lack of depth (we’re talking fire alarms, folks) at the place once proudly known as “Tailback U.”

Where was UGA offensive coordinator Mike Bobo when the Bulldogs were off this past weekend?

He traveled to South Georgia to personally scout UGA’s quarterback of the future, Brice Ramsey, the junior from Camden County High School who committed to the Bulldogs last summer.

Ramsey and Bobo talked on the phone after the game. “Coach Bobo said I throw the deep ball well, along with the short and intermediate passes. He also said I could run. He told me that he can’t wait to coach me after we win two state championships at Camden County.”

Will Kenderius Whitehead follow his high school teammate to UGA? If so, it would give the Bulldogs the player that some feel may be the best pure pass rusher in the state.

A few days ago, M.L.
“I’d love for him to play at Georgia with me,” Tibbs said. “I think he was thinking about committing to Georgia anyways. Now with me doing it, I think it will motivate him a little bit more.”

Whitehead has been leaning to UGA since the summer, but had North Carolina move ahead of the Bulldogs after an official visit with the Tar Heels a couple of weeks ago. “North Carolina actually is my top school,” Whitehead told the AJC.

Henry County defensive end Dalvin Tomlinson has Alabama and Georgia Tech as his co-leaders, followed by Florida, Clemson and Indiana. “You can put Georgia in there, too … and Stanford,” Henry County coach Mike Rozier said.

The 6-foot-3, 255-pounder earned rave reviews for his head-to-head performance last Friday against Sandy Creek defensive lineman Quinteze Williams, who is committed to Florida. Tomlinson started at offensive tackle and defensive end in the loss.

UGA both gained and lost a commitment at wide receiver over the weekend.

Tramel Terry, who is a candidate to be South Carolina’s No. 1 overall prospect for 2013, de-committed from UGA on Sunday. The day before, M.L.
Back to Terry: The speedy wide receiver from Goose Creek High School had made the surprising decision to commit early to UGA a couple of months ago at Dawg Night prospect camp.

“Yeah, I pretty much rushed my decision,” Terry told the AJC. “I don’t want to be committed to Georgia unless I’m 100 percent in. I have other schools I’m looking at. Georgia is still on top of my list. I just feel like I wasn’t committed even when I was, so it was time to go ahead and do this.”

Brice Ramsey, UGA’s quarterback of the future, can play a little kicker, too.

The junior quarterback from Camden County had one of the top 10 longest field goals in the history of Georgia high school football on Friday. Ramsey, who committed early to UGA, booted a 57-yarder in the 58-0 win over Bradwell Institute.

“He actually kicked one earlier that was 57 yards but was wide right,” Camden County coach Jeff Herron told the AJC. “He had plenty of distance on that one and he told me when he came off the field ‘You give me another chance, Coach, and I will make it.’

“Lo and behold, with two minutes at the end of the half, we got to the same location. It was fourth down and a mile. Brice got up there and drilled it. It hit the fence behind the goalpost. It had another 7-8 yards for sure.”

Georgia Tech offered a football scholarship to the offensive lineman who has been nicknamed “The Finisher” by college scouts.

It the first offer for Brandon Kublanow, the 6-foot-3, 290-pounder from Walton High School who is an early favorite to be the state’s No. 1 college prospect along the offensive line for 2013. Kublanow is a UGA fan and the Bulldogs could be the next to offer.

“The Finisher” earned his nickname after devastating and dominating blocking skills were caught on tape by Rivals and Scout at last month’s Corky Kell Classic at the Georgia Dome. Kublanow had 13 pancake blocks against Peachtree Ridge, including a couple where he fell on top of the defender as he was making the block and – to the amazement of scouts – stayed on top of the defender and shoved his helmet into the artificial turf, as if to make sure he got the message.

The Bulldogs have 14 players committed to sign football scholarships with the team in February, along with four high school juniors pledged the sign with UGA the following year.

Many of Georgia’s commitments made unofficial visits to Georgia for Saturday’s 45-42 loss to South Carolina, including 5-star offensive lineman John Theus of Jacksonville and Thomson High School defensive tackle John John Atkins (UGA’s most recent commit).
Strangely, Georgia’s quarterback of the future has yet to start a high school game.

Brice Ramsey is a rising junior who is still waiting to make a name for himself at Camden County High School. But the tall, lanky kid with the high-powered arm already has the stamp of approval from college scouts.

The 6-foot-4, 190-pound Ramsey ended an intense recruiting battle when he committed to Georgia at “Dawg Night” camp last weekend.
Buford High School linebacker Dillon Lee, who has committed to Alabama, proved that he is among the nation’s top athletes over the weekend.

Lee finished in the top 10 of the SPARQ Rating National Championship at “The Opening” — Nike’s new summer training competition that features some of the country’s top college football prospects. In the SPARQ contest, the rising high school seniors are tested in the 40-yard dash, vertical jump, 20-yard shuttle, and throwing the power ball.

Lee led the entire field after two events, and ended up finishing 8th overall. In the preliminary round scores, Lee was clocked in the 40-yard dash at 4.66 seconds and had a 35.6-inch vertical jump.

Lee is the younger brother of UGA offensive lineman Dallas Lee, and committed to Alabama over Florida State and UGA (click on story link).

Georgia’s No. 1 college football prospect at quarterback, Greyson Lambert, is nearly fully recovered from a leg injury that sidelined him for three months and is sprinting through schools on the recruiting trail.

Lambert made unofficial visits to South Carolina and N.C. State last weekend. He plans to make recruiting trips to Alabama, South Carolina, Florida, FSU — and maybe a few other schools — in July.

The 6-foot-6, 195-pounder from Wayne County High School said he has nine early offers: Alabama, South Carolina, Miami, N.C. State, Virginia, Louisville, Purdue, Boston College and Mississippi State. He also had early offers from UGA and Clemson which are no longer available (see below).

Nearly every elite quarterback commits before his senior season, but Lambert is unsure.

Virginia Tech basketball transfer Manny Atkins has committed to Georgia State.

“It’s home, and it’s my home school,” Atkins told the AJC on Tuesday night. “I told myself if I decide to leave Virgina Tech, I will come home and work it out from there. I love the new coaching staff at Georgia State. It seemed like the right fit for me. I like how coach [Ron Hunter] has the system running for next year. I look forward to playing for him.”

The 6-foot-7 forward was one of Georgia’s most-heavily recruited prospects out Tucker High School in 2009, signing with Virginia Tech over around 15 offers, including Georgia Tech, UGA, Auburn, Clemson, Michigan and Florida State. He played two years at the ACC school, averaging 4.9 points as a reserve this past season.

“I was looking for more playing time,” Atkins said. “I just felt like I wasn’t getting as much playing time as I wanted and that it wasn’t going to get any better my …

Which two players might be Georgia’s best “package deal” out of the state’s 2012 college football prospects?

It may be the Jenkins County High School duo of mammoth defensive tackle Jonathan Taylor (top candidate to be the state’s No. 1 overall prospect) and defensive end James DeLoach.

They both have around 15 early scholarship offers from mostly the same schools. They’ve never made it a secret that they wish to play on the same college team.

“We’re best friends,” Taylor told the AJC. “We’re going through the same recruiting process with the same schools. Just about everybody wants us as a package and says we can help out in a hurry on defense. We want to be teammates in college. We enjoy play football and hanging out with each other. And if we’re away at college and get homesick, we can help each other out.”

That leads us to our next question: Which college would they like …

Stephon Tuitt was one of the state’s top recruiting dramas in 2011. The 5-star defensive end from Monroe Area High School initially pledged to Notre Dame but switched to Georgia Tech in mid-January. It lasted for about 30 hours as Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly quickly hopped on a plane to fly down to Georgia to convince Tuitt to commit again to Notre Dame, which Tuitt did, signing last February.

More than three months later, Tuitt was asked about his second choice. “If I didn’t go to Notre Dame, it would’ve been Georgia Tech. It came down to the point where it was … what my feelings were, talking to my family about them, looking for a brighter future, and that I felt more comfortable at Notre Dame. There’s nothing Georgia Tech could’ve done better. They recruited me very well.”

This is a big week for Charles Mann, one of the Georgia’s top college basketball prospects for 2012.

A few days ago, the Union Grove High School guard was offered by the reigning national champions, UConn. Mann already had 10 early offers, including Georgia State, Georgia Southern, Tulane, Rice, George Mason and Northwestern. But this one was special.

“I have always been a big fan of UConn,” Mann told the AJC. “That’s pretty much my dream school. I was real excited and shocked when they offered.”

Was he excited enough to commit? “No, my family wants to go up there and spend some time with the coaches before we think about making any decisions.”

While UConn appears to the early frontunner for Mann, it faces a tough challenger with Georgia Tech. The Yellow Jackets haven’t offered but have scouted Mann a few times recently.

Several of Georgia’s top college football prospects for next year were on display at Friday’s Nike camp in Athens.

However, it was a member of the Class of 2013 that grabbed the spotlight: Grayson High School’s Robert Nkemdiche, a 6-foot-5, 260-pounder who turned everybody’s heads as soon as he walked up to the registration table. He’s only a sophomore.

Nkemdiche dominated the drills, so much to the point that one other heralded defensive lineman — a junior — was overheard saying to a couple of others, “I’m just glad 783 (Nkemdiche’s camp number on his jersey) isn’t in the Class of 2012 with the D-Line rankings.”

The consensus of several recruiting analysts observing the camp, which included players from many surrounding states, was this: Nkemdiche will almost certainly be ranked at Georgia’s No. 1 overall prospect for 2013, and has a decent shot of being rated No. 1 overall in the USA.

1. Go ahead and add two more names to Georgia’s list of football commitments for the Class of 2012. That’s five in all if you’re keeping count.

Jalen Fields and Lonnie Outlaw haven’t held any press conferences or issued any kind of announcements or anything like that. But the rising sophomores at Georgia Military College confirmed this week that the offers they accepted with the Bulldogs in 2010 still stand. And they intend make good on their ends of the deal.
