Notebook: WWRFD … What Will Reuben Foster Do? (UPDATED)

Arkansas is the most recent scholarship offer for LaGrange High School defensive end Joe Sanders, who has been best friends with 5-star Reuben Foster since the sixth grade.

Sanders committed to former Tennessee coach Derek Dooley and officially remains pledged to the Volunteers; but he is considering other options due to the coaching change.

Sanders will make an official visit this weekend to Washington, accompanied by Reuben Foster and another one of his longtime friends, Troup High School offensive tackle Maurice Swain. All three are are childhood buddies, played together at Troup last season, and are likely being recruited as a “package deal” by Washington.

New Tennessee coach Butch Jones has 3 commits from Georgia. The Volunteers are also in the chase for Carl Lawson and Vonn Bell (UT)

“I don’t know about that,” said Sanders, when asked about a package deal. “I just know they (Washington) called, they wanted me to visit, and they’re supposed to offer me.”

Will Sanders and Foster play together in college? “That’s what we are shooting for. But we haven’t talked much recently with Reuben moving all the way in Auburn, Ala. We’ll have a lot of time on the plane (back and forth to Washington) to talk about recruiting.”

The 6-foot-5, 270-pound Sanders said he has offers from Arkansas, Missouri, Vanderbilt, North Carolina, Tennessee, Kentucky and Duke. One more offer he wouldn’t mind is UGA. He went on an unofficial visit with Foster to see UGA defeat Georgia Tech.

“I’d like to get one from Georgia, but it really doesn’t matter to me as long as I have the chance to play in the SEC,” Sanders said. “I know Washington is not in the SEC, but I don’t have a problem going there either. I’m just going out there to see how everything is.”

What was Sanders’ reaction to the Arkansas offer? “It feels good. I don’t know too much about them. I know they’ve got a whole new coaching staff, and they’ve had some good seasons. That’s another school I have to look into. I might take an official visit there. I’ve only got three right now.”

Sanders will go to Washington this weekend, Tennessee on Jan. 18, and North Carolina on Jan. 25.

What’s the latest with Tennessee? “I’m still committed. I talked to Coach (Butch) Jones, and he asked me how I felt about Tennessee. He said he still wants me there … I’m just visiting some schools to make sure I’m making the right decision.”

WWRFD?

What’s the latest with Reuben Foster? He has returned from the Under Armour All-America game, where ex-UGA recruiting coordinator Rodney Garner was seen carrying around his MVP trophy in the hotel lobby after the game.

Prediction: Reuben Foster will be one of the nation's most unpredictable prospects to follow over the next three weeks. Should be fun to follow (AJC)

Prediction: Reuben Foster will be one of the nation's most unpredictable prospects to follow over the next three weeks. Should provide for a lot of entertainment (AJC)

Foster told AuburnUndercover’s Bryan Matthews that Auburn, UGA, Alabama, LSU and Washington are still in contention but that he plans to only visit three. “I’m going to take all five of them so get ready to call coaches and be upset. Don’t know which ones, but there’s going to be two upset.” Foster is tentatively scheduled to visit UGA on Jan. 25.

Foster de-committed from Auburn because it did not retain his mentor, Trooper Taylor. The Auburn media has tried to document Foster’s relationship with Auburn’s new defensive coordinator, Ellis Johnson. Foster told the website that “I love (Johnson)” and he “reminds me of my granddaddy.” Johnson, 61, probably enjoyed that one.

While all of Foster’s finalists would probably accept his commitment, some of them reportedly “aren’t sweating it” if he goes elsewhere because of all the drama associated with his situation. What’s my prediction on Foster? One recruiting analyst said this about the free-spirited Foster: “He will probably go with the school that talks to him last before he signs the paper.” I agree with that. But if I had to guess today, I’d pick Auburn. Just think Foster went to all the trouble to move to Auburn, bringing his daughter along, and his mother got a job there. However, it should be a fun one to follow over the next month.

LSU IN SWEEPSTAKES FOR 5-STAR?

LSU is trying to get involved with Carl Lawson, the 5-star defensive end from Milton who is officially committed to Auburn. Lawson will visit Clemson this weekend, and likely set up a recruiting trip next to Tennessee. I wouldn’t be surprised to see Lawson make his final decision sooner than later because he’s tired of the recruiting hoopla.

THIS AND THAT

QB Chase Rosenberg

QB Chase Rosenberg

Among the state’s top uncommitted prospects is Brett Sheehan, the QB from Collins Hill High School who backed his pledge to Florida International after the coaching change. Sheehan told the AJC that he’s hearing from Georgia State, Illinois State, Furman, Florida Atlantic, Florida International and Bowling Green. “I have an official visit set up for Georgia State on Jan, 18, and then I plan on taking one or two more, if possible,” Sheehan said. “I’ll most likely not commit anywhere until right before signing day. Or, depending on the situation, I might wait until after signing day. As of now, I would say Georgia State is my leader but I am keeping my options open.” …  Chase Rosenberg, QB from Centennial High School, is in the mix with some top academic schools, including Brown, Dartmouth, Penn, Davidson and Georgetown. Rosenberg, who passed for nearly 2,300 yards and 18 touchdowns in his first year as a starter, is also starting to hear from some FBS schools, according to his father. You can watch his film HERE … Another overlooked prospect to watch is Zach Adams, a 6-5, 280-pound offensive tackle from Roswell High School. He gave up three sacks in two seasons – all to Carl Lawson (one in 2011 and two last season). “I can tell you that Zach is a great whose best days of football are ahead of him,” said former Roswell coach Justin Sanderson. Adams has a 3.4 GPA and strong interest from Georgia Tech, Duke, Ohio, Elon, William & Mary and Georgia Southern. You can watch his film HEREGrayson High School is sending another senior to a BCS school: Kicker Alex Louthan has decided to join West Virginia as a preferred walk-on … Is South Carolina in danger of losing a commit from Georgia? West Forsyth High School LB Mo Camara, who has been committed to the Gamecocks (his first offer) since last spring, was recently offered by Wake Forest. Camara told the AJC on Thursday night that he will likely take an official visit with the Demon Deacons on Jan. 25, which is one week after his trip with the Gamecocks.

Rueben Foster to Washington, now that would be a surprise. That young man seems to be so confused about what he is doing and where he wants to play, it is hard to see how he will make a decision, based on his needs and is what is best for him, at this time. His support is near to his home, not at a school, clear across the country, but I hope somebody gets with that kid and helps straighten him out.
Marijuana is legal there though now, so one never knows. I would hope this is not a selling point for any athlete from anyplace, but stranger things have happened.
I am not sure Sanders is what UGA is looking for, so before anybody starts complaining about UGA missing another one, try to remember that they, a lot more than us fans, know what they are looking for and how a certain man would fit into the program. I am sure Foster would be a welcome addition, but much like NKE, a coach and staff can’t bet the farm that they will stay with any verbal they make and you recruit the hardest, for those you know are as solid as possible. If Foster decides on UGA, I don’t think you could get excited until the pen hits the paper with this kid, along with a few other high stars kids out there right now. Rumors about the uncommitted big names fly around daily, and if they don’t know what they want by now, the rumors will continue to fly. Feb. 6th, most of the rumors will be put to rest, but until then, a lot of these kids will just enjoy the free meals and trips.

Big Albany Dawg,

Would you rather have Sanders or Mount Adams? Sanders or Toby Johnson? It could hurt. There is not much room left at the inn already. If Sanders accepts, we may not have room for someone far more talented.

Fun?
Is this your definition of “fun”?
Watching an 18 kid with a 3 year old child continue to feed his already over-sized ego.
Lets take the blinders off for a second, the young man has unfortunately put his faith in 2 crooked convicts already — Charlie Flowers & Trooper Taylor.
Now, he’s bouncing all over the Country holding University’s hostage, making demands about getting his childhood sweethearts(who otherwise wouldn’t get a sniff) scholarships.
Fun??….some see it as Sad.

Foster at this point is ony a distraction. Even his “Friend” Matthews has started to see that. He’s obviously a kid that’s never been many places, and is riding this “Gravy Train” as long as possible. He;ll be the next Bryce Brown, Or worse the next M. Clarett, a freshmen sensation looking to cash in on all the perks. He’ll screw up some program and have them on probation three years afte he’s gone. He’s toxic and UGA needs not to touch him.

You fools had three players on your roster from Westlake High, where Chance attended. Sean Jones, Resty Beadles, and Kiante Tripp. Hell, Beadles was Warmack’s position coach at Westlake! And you fail to land the kid!!?? He’ll be one of the 1st 10 players taken in this year’s NFL draft, which is unheard of for an offensive lineman! Unbelievable. When are y’all going to demand some answers for these gynormous screwups? After 33 years, you’d think you’d be all over it. At least y’all have your basketball program to fall back on.

All I want for Foster is for him to choose one school, stay committed, finish your education, and raise your kids to be happy and healthy. You didn’t seek all of this attention, it was given to you. Just don’t forget what it took to get that attention in the first place. And as much as I hate to make this statement, Washington would be the best place for him and his small family. In reality, the ‘football portion’ of his life will take care of itself. There are guys who worked at UPS last year who are in the league right now. U of Washington will provide several things: A chance to get away from enablers, such as family, friends, and other hangers on (in the process of creating newer ones…lol), a top notch education, and a great cosmopolitan city to raise his kids for the next 3-4 years. Their football tradition is not bad either. Georgia needs you, but it’s about what is best for you and yours.

@slydog not sure what you’re talking about. UGA, like many top 25 football teams, offers kids every year who need a prayer to qualify. 3 from the 2012 class did not qualify, and there’s some this year who will go down the wire.

Tide Roll – you…don’t seem to understand recruiting. Just because a kid plays football in Atlanta does not mean he wants to go to UGA. You think because Sean Jones and Chance Warmack wen to the same high school (years apart) that not landing him is a failure? Are you suffering from some type of traumatic brain injury? And Richt has had a lot of top-5 recruiting classes.

You seem to think that UGA should have 9 5-star DE and OLB every year. That…would probably hurt the team overall.
