Ex-football recruit on Tommy Tuberville: ‘It’s a bad situation’ (UPDATED)

Within the last couple of months, new Cincinnati coach Tommy Tuberville has been accused of going postal on an assistant coach, leaving Texas Tech recruits in the middle of dinner to accept a new job, and running off recruits at Cincy (AP)

Within the last couple of months, new Cincinnati coach Tommy Tuberville has been accused of going postal on an assistant coach, leaving Texas Tech recruits in the middle of dinner to accept a new job, and running off longtime recruits at Cincy (AP)

Pebblebrook High School defensive back Demetrius Monday de-committed from Cincinnati on Thursday after never hearing from new coach Tommy Tuberville.

“I think it’s messed up,” his father, Bryant Monday, told the AJC. “You wait until a few weeks before signing day to say something? They could have told us a month ago.

“Now we’re left with less than a month until signing day to figure something out. He had other scholarship offers but he hasn’t talked to those coaches in six months … since he committed to Cincinnati on July 25.

“It’s really disappointing.”

The 5-foot-10, 180-pound Monday said he committed to Cincinnati over Ole Miss, Mississippi State, Ball State, Ohio and Georgia State, among others, last summer. Tuberville was hired by Cincinnati on Dec. 8. After not hearing from the new staff, the elder Monday finally called up the football offices this week.

“They told us to ‘look other places,’” Monday said. “I’m in Los Angeles on vacation, and I just got the bad news.

“The thing is, we’ve talked to some other kids committed to Cincinnati. They say the same thing, that they haven’t heard from the staff. Basically (Tuberville) isn’t calling anybody, he’s trying to get the kids to de-commit on their own.

“It’s a bad situation.”

RELATED: Jaleel Canty, a defensive back from Lansing, Mich., and friend of the Monday family, contacted the AJC on Thursday night to say that he also had de-committed from Cincinnati that day under similar circumstances. Canty committed to Cincinnati last July, hadn’t heard from the new staff, and finally called the football office on Thursday. He got the same bad news from an assistant. “They said they were bringing in their own guys, so all the guys that are committed are out luck.” Canty requested a conversation with Tuberville. “They said he was busy, trying to get his staff together.” What was Canty’s reaction to being cut loose? “It’s messed up. I’ve been committed to Cincinnati since July, and I kind of cut off communication with other schools. I don’t understand why (Tuberville) couldn’t tell us a month ago. We’re less than a month away from signing day now. And I don’t understand why we had to call them. Why couldn’t they call us and tell us a month ago? It’s really disappointing.”

OH MY … HAVE YOU HEARD THE LATEST?

Why isn’t Butch Jones recruiting Monday to Tennessee? New coaches always re evaluate players and offers. His staff recruited Monday, not Tommy T.

Why would a black kid play for Tommy Tubberville? Tommy is a birther! What a slap to black kids!

BTW, if Tommy lacks even the basic courtesy of a simple acknowledgement, why would anybody bother with such an decency.

Wow, this Tuberville guy has good manner, didn’t his mom teach him some basic courtesy?

I got a reply letter from every graduate school I applied, thanking me for applying.

You’d be a “Mad Dawg” at any coach who left uga to join the staff at a rival school. If Rodney Garner were still there you’d still be kissin’ cousins.

Funny how you don’t mention the fact that UC’s staff just got put together in the last two weeks to evaluate commits to see if they’ll fit the current system. Also funny that there is no mention that this is the “dead period” in recruiting where coaches are only alloted a certain amount of time to talk to recruits weekly. Of course that we be considered journalism so it’s now clear to me why you didn’t mention that.

He’s not being criticized for not honoring offers made to these kids by another coach. He’s being criticized for not calling the kids to tell them. That’s not cuddling (or coddling, which I assume is what you meant). That’s basic courtesy.

Tub has a right to pick his own players…get over it and look else where. When new coach comes in and he didn’t recruit you then its up to you to call ( but it would be nice if they called)and see where you fit..Good luck kid at least you know now. Just let one of the schools know you interested and you’ll get the call.

You expect Tuberville to reach out to athletes he and his brand new staff know nothing about and expect them to be all on board? He is trying to get his Texas Tech recruits to hope over with him. Do you know how many recruits Brian Kelly took with him when he left UC to go to ND? More than majority, and considering Butch Jones got verbal commitments from about 10 kids, why worry about those 2 star athletes that won’t play anyway. He needs to be focusing on the players he will have and be starting or have major rolls on the team, and his recruits from TT, and any recruits worth the time. Demetrius Monday is not worth the time.

Looks like maybe Cincinnati sold their soul to the Devil. Sucks for the kids, but who cares about them anyway, right? They need every angle they can find to get out of the Big East, and if that includes pulling the rug out from under some kid without notice and breaking your promise, then so be it. The World sucks, kid – toughen up!

New coach should not be expected to honor past coaches offers. They need to contact that coach wherever he landed and see if he wants still wants them. New coach = new recruiting targets due to differences in philosophy and what they each perceive as talent. Sounds like this kid had plenty of other offers and none of the teams he mentioned has finished up their recruiting so contact those schools. Otherwise, we are left to assume those other schools were interested in him but never offered since he was a ways down there recruiting boards. Lots of schools still out there even if JUCO, FCS, of Div III. Get your degree.

Oh my gosh what a joke. So let me get this straight. Its tubervilles job to call every recruit he didn’t recruit to tell them they won’t be on his staff? I got news for the dad that burden is upon you. You are right, a month ago when tubs was hired you should have been on the phone asking tubs if he thought your son would be retained instead of being on vacation. News flash tubs didn’t recruit your son. If anything you should be calling tennessee to see if butch davis has a spot.

Put yourself in this father shoes. Its around 3 to 4 weeks before NSD and TT has been at UC since early December and he hasnt call to let the recruit know if he will honor his verbal commiment or look somewhere else. You know you have a lot of coaches who think about self. Look at Brian Kelly, he get blown out Monday Night and is interview for the NFL coaching job Tuesday. I think he was talking before the NC GAME. That’s why his playcalling was suspect in the game. But getting back TT, he left Texas Tech unexpected and the way he was on NATIONAL TV knocking the headset off one of his assistant during a game on the sideline. Who in their right mind would want to play for him. You dont know if he going to be there

The sports writer(term used loosely) is a joke.
This newspaper is a joke.

The favoritism shown in this section is appalling!
Why do articles pertaining to Robert Nkimdiche NEVER have comments?
Is he special?
Is he better than the other recruits discussed on a daily basis?
Has his Family struck a deal with said newspaper & columnist?

No one can comment on the DOZENS of outlandish “articles” concerning the Nkimdiche Family recruiting circus, butt it’s ok to discuss “less fortunate” young men like Rueben & Montravious.
I believe Bill O’Reilly(whom I personally detest, btw) once said the Atlanta Journal is outta control.

Would love to see your son commit to academics also by signing with Ga State who is now part of the sun belt. Great football being played and the football improves each year on quality. Ga State will have growing pains but not so much if enough quality young men like your son value an education as well.

While it would be nice if he called, it isn’t like he recruited the kid. You feel bad for the kid, but it is something they have to think about. That’s one thing Richt can tell kids, he is the longest tenured head coach of one team in the SEC. And with the rise of UGA it doesn’t appear like he’s going anywhere.

Few players choose based on the school. They commit to the coach and the system. Its not always the case but the majority of the time it is. That’s why most players when coaching changes occur decommit. The ones that stay its normally their best offer or the family runs in their family. If this kid has no ties to cincinnati and he chose them because he liked butch jones and his coaching staff, then it sounds like its their fault. Perhaps it will teach these kids to exploring their options instead of pledging their intentions so early. There is a reason signing day is in february. Its so the kids are protected from exactly this. He and his family should have explored their options, kept in better contact with all the coaches that liked him, and pledged his intentions closer to signing day after all coaching changes had occured. My guess is he just couldn’t wait to tweet his intentions like all the other attention madonnas. Tuberville has no obligation to this kid whatsoever.

If there were a Bobby Petrino award for dishonesty and arrogance, Tuberville would have a good shot at beating Petrino himself. Ole Miss fans had a poster of him next to Bill Clinton with Tuberville’s “They’ll have to carry me out of here in a pine box” comment (made days before he was announced as HC at Auburn) next to Clinton’s “I did not have sex with that woman” quote. I hate the stress on these kids but they may look back and find that all they missed was a train wreck in Cincinatti.

Wow. First of all, how is Cincy a better job than Texas Tech? That’s like two rungs down the ladder. I don’t care if they have been good lately….the Big 12 is worlds better than the Big East.

Second, this guy seems more and more like a class-A D-bag who probably deserved to have Bobby Latrino steal his job when Auburn went behind his back. College football has just turned into a snake pit. How are all these coaches such low class people? I mean come on…..Lane Kiffin, Bobby Latrino, Urban Meyer, Jim Tressel, Joe Paterno, Pete Carroll, and even Nick Saban to an extent…they’re just liars and manipulators. What happened to guys like Don Shula and Tom Landry?

Taco, that just isn’t done. There are almost no coaches low enough not to honor the scholarships of previous coaches. Even the Lane Kiffins of the world do that. It’s professional ettiquette. Even if all illusions seem to be fading on this, college football is NOT the NFL….at least it isn’t supposed to be. In the NFL if there’s a new GM…fine…cut people. It’s a job. For some of these kids, college football is the ONLY ticket they have to a college education and a chance to better themselves. My son may have a chance to play D-1 college football and I can tell you that it would be a HUGE relief in our household to not have to chip in $70,000 in tuition money. If a guy like Tuberville came along and pulled the rug out from under him after 4 years of hard work and a commitment on part of the University to honor a scholarship, I might just be the first guy to sue over it.

Bill Shneider would ask his players leave thank-you notes when they leave a hotel.

Tommy Tuberville wouldn’t bother with a young man’s future because of an inconvenience. Tuberville’s mommy must have taught his son well.

The recruits for Cincinnati received scholarship offers from the school. As such they should expect a modicum of professionalism from representatives of U of C and Tuberville is the CEO and ultimate representative of the program. I can understand why he wants to bring in his own players but the professional thing to do is to contact Cincinnati’s verbal commits. It is not that it is going to take up a bnch of his time to chase them down to talk on the phone – they have GAs for that.

I agree with the comments on here that coaches should have the right to say “no”. After all, every week there is another kid who says “no thanks” to a coach or school. The kid doesn’t want to go to UC if he is not going to play in the new coach’s scheme. That said, I wouldn’t want my kid playing for TT. Look for a coach who has some standards, class, and can be respected.
