Alabama and UGA fighting it out for last visit with AJC’s Mr. Football

Alvin Kamara

LAKE BUENA VISTA, FLA. — Alvin Kamara, the AJC’s Mr. Football, has two major decisions to make over the next month:

The biggest one is picking a college, with the Norcross High School running back listing Alabama and UGA as his co-leaders, and Oregon somewhere in the mix. He’s got a month to figure that out.

The other one is a little more pressing: Next week, Kamara will finally decide which college he will visit on Feb. 1, the final recruiting weekend before signing day.

“I’m not certain where I will take that last visit, I’m still trying to figure it out,” Kamara said. “Both Alabama and Georgia want that last visit, so I still got to wait and see.”

Kamara has developed close friendships with the assistants from both of his co-leaders who are in charge of recruiting him, Alabama defensive coordinator Kirby Smart and UGA running backs coach Bryan McClendon. On Wednesday, Kamara talked to Smart just before Alabama’s team plane departed for the national championship game.

“It’s pretty intense about that last weekend,” Kamara said. “I guess it’s important to Alabama and Georgia because they both want me to see their school last, so it’s burned in my mind.”

Kamara said he will likely visit both as close as possible to signing day, even mentioning the possibility of doing a rare midweek visit to one a few days before he takes the other on Feb. 1.

“I could maybe go to Georgia on a midweek,” Kamara said. “It really doesn’t matter. Well see how that goes.”

At Under Armour practices this week, the 5-foot-10, 190-pounder has been praised for his speed and versatility. “It has been fun competing, and that’s all you can do,” Kamara said. “It’s 90 of the best guys in the nation, so you’ve got to bring your A game every day. I definitely feel like I fit in. At practice, I’ve been trying to separate myself from the others and been trying to shine.”

This past season, Kamara led Norcross to its first-ever state championship while rushing for 2,264 yards and 31 touchdowns.

Interesting a defensive coordinator would be the lead recruiter for an offensive prospect.

Stan , I agree why would Kamara put Smart, the Defensive Coordinator on the same level as McClendon , the person who will be coaching him at Georgia. I would love to know the BS that Kirby Smart is feeding him.

Who wants to play for Preacher coach? If you do, you can play in a non BCS bowl every year and be irrelevant in the national championship race for 31 years and counting.

Losers! Have fun watching Saban raise another trophy!

I hope he chooses UGA, but I think he will chose the team that gives him the greatest chance to see the field the earliest. Both teams are pretty stacked at RB, but Alabama has a deeper group of back ups already, so I think he would be better off at UGA. No telling what these kids are thinking about half the time though, so I am not even going to venture a guess right now.

He needs to get bigger. Don’t see him being close to an every down back at his size. He needs a year of the training table to make a good impact…..wherever he ends up.

Alvin, please come play at the university of Georgia for a great Christian man, Mark Richt. He has great integrity and character. He cares for you more than football. Coach Saban is evil. He probably doesn’t go to church. He doesn’t care about you after football. Pray about it, my son.

I talked to an assistant coach earlier this season at Norcross. He said AK wants to go to Bama bc he believes – even in a crowded backfield – that Saban is more apt to play his freshmen than Richt. However, bc Bama’s backfield is already crowded and two elite RBs already committed, it has given him pause and it’s the only reason he’s even mentioning Oregon.

This one probably comes down to him picking Georgia. Couldn’t go wrong either way. Roll Tide!

Alvin will play at UGA or sit at Alabama. My guess he stays in state. Also, once Saban announces he is interviewing for a NFL job it will be a no brainer.

I guess I’m surprised that Bama and UGA are the top 2 teams. Both teams are loaded in the RB department. If anything I would have to say that UGA has an advantage because Bama has a commit from Henry.
Both University’s will be strong the next couple of years so you can’t go wrong with either one. Good luck Alvin!

Bama people on here, do you think Saban will head to the NFL next year? I personally don’t see it happening, but am hearing more and more that he could be in Cleveland. I guess I just don’t understand why he would go when he flopped the last time in the NFL and now he is HC at the top football university in the country.
Sorry my fellow Dawgs, but when you are playing for your 3rd NC in 4 years, they are the top program.

BobDawg – Don’t get me wrong. I would love to see him at UGA. Most kids want to come in and start right away. He will not start right away at either school. I don’t question what both schools offer. It just seems that nowadays these kids look for “stardom” right off the bat and will go to a school where they are handed the job.

@W.B. – Try and keep up with the conversation. #1 – Tech…. Kamara… never gonna happen so scratch that off your list. #2 – I did not say that Saban was going to leave for Cleveland. You see I do read other articles of interest, unlike yourself who stays in the comics, Many publications claim that because of connections between Saban and some big wig at Cleveland there is a possibility. Of course you would have read that too, again, if you get your head head out of the comics and fairy tales(i.e. – Kamara to tech..hillarious)
That is the reason why i was asking Bama fans what they have heard. I never insinuated that he was going. I don’t see it happening, but stranger things have happened in the football arena.

DIT – I’m not gonna say no chance, but it’s slim to almost no chance. Sources close to Saban – and his wife – that after a long career and development of who he is as a coach, he realizes that he is more suited for the college game. Plus he is heavily involved in his charitable organization in Tuscaloosa – Nick’s Kids. Not that he can’t run that or be involved in it from anywhere, but I’m just saying his priorities have changed.

A lot of people get on here and want to vilify him for this or that, but if you ask his players – they all love him. He’s been great for the university, the state and college football in general. All good things must come to an end, but unless it’s just an astronomical number with ownership involved, Saban – to the chagrin of the college football world – is staying put.

Since none of us can predict which school any kid will choose (best of luck wherever you go AK) I’ll weigh in on Florida’s ‘performance’ last night.

Its rare to see any team at any level display such a lack of composure and confidence in itself. The eyes are the window to the soul and the most perplexed set of eyes in the Superdome last night belonged to Will Muschamp. He looked like he didn’t believe in his team and himself and he knew he had given that secret away.

To paraphrase an old proverb: A dead gator rots from the head down.

Alvin Kamara says “Roll Dawgs! Saban won’t leave the “trailer” capitol of America this year but he will be headed for the Texas Longhorns in 2014 – right after he loses the SEC champ game to UGA. LSU loses – Florida loses – Miss State loses – Game Crocks get lucky.. Maybe the SEC isn’t that much better than the top teams in the other conferences this year. Got a feeling – got a feeling that Notre Dame should lose by 17 to Bummer BUT this one could be much closer than that. Could this be the luck of the Irish?

Injuries can happen in practice or in games. UGA does NOT HAVE quality depth beyond Boo Malcome who is unhappy at UGA. IF he leaves, then UA would only have two backs.

AT FB, I see Merritt Hall only as a journeyman. Zander O will leave UGA to party with his twin bro Tree.

THIS IS WHY UGA desperately needs some quality in their running back corps.
