Auburn offers Carl Lawson’s teammate as part of possible “package deal”

Auburn has made a late offer to one of the state’s top seniors at running back.

Auburn made a late offer to Peyton Barber, who is committed to Ole Miss

Auburn made a late offer to Peyton Barber, who is committed to Ole Miss

Milton High School’s Peyton Barber said he got a “random call” on Sunday from Auburn’s new coach, Gus Malzahn. Barber is committed to Ole Miss.

“I didn’t know who it was, at first,” Barber told the AJC. “Coach Malzahn said he had nothing to do with the old coaching staff at Auburn. He said if he had been there, I would’ve definitely had an offer before the season. (Malzahn) felt like I was one of the best running backs he’s watched this year. He liked the way I ran, blocked and caught balls. He said I could be an every-down back there.”

The 6-foot, 225-pound Barber was overlooked by many colleges because he missed nearly all of his junior season with torn ligaments in his ankle. Ole Miss gambled with an early offer to Barber, who committed to the Rebels last summer.

Barber remains committed to Ole Miss, but will take official visits to UCLA on Jan. 11, Arizona State on Jan. 18, the Rebels on Jan. 25, and maybe Miami on Feb. 1. He also may take a midweek trip to Tennessee.

“I feel like things are really good with Ole Miss,” Barber said. “But I’m taking the visits because anything can happen in recruiting. A coach could get fired or leave or something. I just want to make sure I’m making the right decision with Ole Miss. But I like Coach (Hugh) Freeze because he’s a man of faith, and I’m pretty big on faith, too. He’s not afraid to discuss that topic with me. I also feel like Coach Freeze is doing something good there.”

There’s an interesting angle with the Auburn offer. Barber’s Milton teammate and close friend is defensive end Carl Lawson, who is the nation’s No. 2-ranked prospect by ESPN. Lawson remains committed to Auburn but will likely visit some other schools because of the coaching change.

Could this be part of a “package deal” from Auburn to secure Lawson?

Barber is not sure if he’ll visit Auburn but did say “I definitely feel like Coach Malzahn is going to bring them back to the Auburn everybody knows.”

Also, any UGA fans that root for Alabama or Florida in the bowl games because they’re “SEC”, you reveal yourselves to be of minimal intelligence.

My problem is that I have never cared for Notre Dame. OR Bummer. Since UGA recruits more against Bummer it may be for UGA’s advantage for Bummer to lose. However if Notre Dame wins they will be more of a recruiting force in the south. Since Saban is likely to leave after the 2013 season any way – guess I will go with bummer. I figure Bummer by 17 but close at the half.

Blackout…the only thing that hurts me is to watch your immature, nonsensicle posts. You need help in the form of something. I just don’t know what. If Bama truly is your team, you’d be on your way to Miami instead of posting on a UGA blog at this late juncture with your pathetic, juvenile posts. Enjoy the game wherever you watch it. Just remember, the Tide is a great team and an asset to the SEC — and you, little man, had absolutely nothing to do with it. I’m sure you’ll be jacked and puffed up with pride at the Jiffy Lube when they beat ND — which they should. Just don’t say you vacuumed my car when I know you didn’t. Or check the air in my tires… You get what you pay for I guess…Roll Tide

Brie's Mom

I wish Payton all the luck in the world. I am the white blonde lady in the second grade at Teasley that volunteered to help you learn how to read. Payton used to get off the Bus with my daughter after school on non practice days and come to my house and I would buy him books to read.

Payton’s parents have always been hell bent on him getting an athletic scholarship. The teacher at Teasley asked me to help him and another girl learn how to read. The little girl moved away. Payton has always had a wonderful personality that just drew you in. So in the fall of second grade I approached his dad who always watched practice in Smyrna peewee ball, as I was watch my daughter practice cheerleading, if Payton could come home with my daughter on non-practice days instead of going to asp so I could tutor him more. He loved reading the books I bought for him each week.

I am glad to see that Payton has these opportunities in Football. I am also glad that Payton was lucky enough to get a great second grade teacher at Teasley Elem. in Cobb. The teacher was able to say I have a couple of kids that need some extra help, you want to volunteer. So, Payton may not have been taught the Ga education mode of reading. But this mom with a masters degree taught him to read as the nun’s taught me to read 45 years ago. Payton had the advantage that I know he could read at 2 nd grade maybe 3rd grade level at the end of second grade.

Congratulations Payton. I am proud of you. Brie will graduate from C in May. Celene who went to Teasley with you and goes to Milton has my Facebook.

Brick, that’s not ironic, it’s tragic. Blackout’s self esteem is tied to a college football team…”Our football team beat you at the end of a close game, and that makes us better and smarter than you.”

actually kool is dumb not to root for all sec teams to win the bowl games if your a dawgs fan. if the sec had the respect it does now about 6 or 7 years ago, then uga might have won a national title already. im rooting for all sec teams to win their bowl games and ALA to beat the mess out of the irish. it will only help next years sec winner to play for the national title. its all about respect with bcs and the sec winner right now gets all the respect because of the other sec teams are winning their bowl games against other conferences more times than not.

Auburn casting nets far and wide on other team commits trying to put a class together. Ought to be a breeze for Garner. He works the recruiting sites for info.

Funny this article has nothing to do with UGA or Alabama yet some seem to be compelled to trash the others school and the others fans on the blog. Also last time I checked AJC wasn’t the UGA paper.

All the mutts calling out Balckoutanyone?

For starters… I’m a Bama fan. A BAMA FAN for crying out loud. Just like Ole Miss fans Jawja fans need to know their role and show the proper respect when you fools engage Alabama fans in any form of dialog. While Jawja was losing to the likes of Central Florida and Michigan St, Bama has kept the SEC on top of college football world 3 out of the last 4 years. While your struggling with Nebraska in a game no one will watch, Bama will be holding strong for the entire SEC in the most watch game in college football history. It is a burden Bama and everyone associated with the program must bare. A burden that comes at great cost.

Now if you read all that, keep in mind as with 99.0225% of the rest of my bs…. I’m just screwing with you guys. Lol ROLL TIDE!!!!!

Auburn better be glad they are casting nets…Rodney Garner was lazy at UGA…waiting too late to make offers (ie Dillon Lee, Austin Sheppard, etc) or not making offers at all (Carl Lawson, Max Garcia, etc) or not even visiting the HS’s within the area…example Norcross (I was informed by an Asst Coach there that he hasn’t been there in 10 years…less than an hour away from Athens)!! Keep staying @ home so you can get your 6 buffets a day!!

Rhall..Thats BS–Garner is not lazy and did follow-up per Richt’s interest. The word of asst coach for ten years…thanks funny. Asst 10 years must not be much of a coach to be asst that long without making HC.
UGA will miss RG.
