5 prospects to watch in RisingSeniors game at 1 p.m. Monday

The state of Georgia has another strong crop of football prospects for next year.

Around 100 high school juniors will be on display for the RisingSeniors.com Bowl, which will be played at 1 p.m. Monday at Grady High School. Tickets are $20 for the all-star game that will also be broadcasted on ESPN3.com.

Here’s a look at the top five prospects in the game:

  • Deshaun Watson, quarterback, Gainesville: The 6-foot-4, 200-pounder has looked like the state’s No. 1 prospect in practices. Watson has prototypical size, he possesses outstanding composure, he’s a running threat, and he can throw on the run with velocity. Watson has been just about perfect on short to intermediate throws in the cold and rainy weather. “He’s as gifted as anybody I’ve seen,” said Blessed Trinity coach Tim McFarlin, the East team’s offensive coordinator. Watson nearly holds all of the state’s major passing records, and he led Gainesville to its first state championship earlier this month. Watson committed to Clemson on last year’s signing day but he’s still looking around at Ohio State, Auburn and Tennessee. He also wouldn’t mind an offer from Georgia, which he thought he was going to get last summer.
  • Raekwon McMillan, linebacker, Liberty County: The 6-2, 249-pounder is the early frontrunner as the state’s top prospect for 2014. He has more than 50 scholarship offers, and he’s ranked as a 5-star by 247sports. McMillan has been slowed in practices by an ankle injury but he’s still made some bone-crushing hits. “Being ranked high doesn’t go to my head because it can all be gone in one day,” McMillan said. “You’ve got to keep your head on a swivel because someone is always looking for your spot.” McMillan has five favorites in Ohio State, Clemson, Georgia, Alabama and USC, with the Buckeyes as his leader. “Even though Ohio State is far away, they still make me feel like home,” McMillan said.
  • Nick Chubb, running back, Cedartown: Perhaps no one has benefitted more from this week than the 5-11, 210-pounder. Everybody wondered if Chubb was the “real deal” or another small-town superstar who posted Nintendo-like numbers against inferior competition. Chubb may be better than advertised, dominating the practice sessions more than the other high-profile running backs. “He reminds you of an Alabama tailback; he’s got big legs, he’s hard to tackle, he runs hard and he runs behind his pads,” said Sandy Creek coach Chip Walker, the West team’s head coach. Chubb has early offers from Georgia Tech, Tennessee, Purdue and Ohio State but his life is likely to radically change after this week. Chubb will probably be rated as the state’s No. 1 running back for 2014 and appear in the national rankings. He is a childhood fan of Georgia.
  • Demarre Kitt, wide receiver, Sandy Creek: The 6-1, 195-pounder has put some distance between him and the rest of the field as the state’s top prospect at wide receiver. Kitt has nice size, he isn’t afraid to go over the middle, and he has an extra gear to get past the safeties. “He just makes plays,” Walker said. “He’s smooth. He catches everything thrown to him. He’s got better speed than people think he does. He’s a complete wideout.” Kitt is listed as questionable for the game after suffering a hamstring injury on Saturday. Kitt was formerly committed to Georgia but reopened his recruitment. He now has Ohio State and Clemson as his leaders.
  • Christian Harris, offensive lineman, Collins Hill: The 6-5, 266-pounder was “discovered” this week. He got an early scholarship offer from Ohio but will likely have 20 or more by the spring. Harris has ideal size and athleticism at left tackle, he gets off the ball well, and he is very physical. Harris said he would commit to Georgia if he gets an early offer. “I’ve been raised to be a Georgia boy and my family loves them to death,” Harris said. “It’s close to home, so I would have to consider committing.”

Dawgs are slipping on Qb’s……..Trent Dilfer said the guy going to LSU this year from the state was easily the best QB in the country, we did not offer the guy and have been stuck on Brice Ramsey.Watson is lights out good, has the size and mobility that Richt needs desperately in his system……..similar to how Charlie Ward was, Aaron Murray is not mobile enough, even thou his stats were better in the championship game, he lost in the making of plays with your feet department to AJ……..

Why now most of these kids fevoring Ohio State, i bet Ohio will not have undefeated like last yr. This yr they were lucky, just like ND

Sounds like they love and want to play for their flagship university, hope UGA doesn’t let them get away.Need the kids who want to play for instate schools to stay at home, always better support with family and friends close by.

We need to offer all 5 of these talented kids and find a place for them at the UGA…

If we haven’t offered all (5) of these kids really shows why Rodney Garner needed to be replaced as RC….new RC needs to have a better sense of urgency….not like UGA handled Dillon Lee, Austin Shepherd, etc (kids they considered locks and took their time offering…they went to AL instead!!) Want to win a NC….CREATE A SENSE OF URGENCY or THE WHOLE STAFF WILL BE 85 BEFORE THEY KNOW IT!!!

@RHall55. The buck stops on MR’s desk, or atleast it should… Richt makes the decision(s) on who is offered, and when, after getting input from his asst. coaches. If his decision making speed is anything like his clock management skills, then the Dawgs are in deep-doo-doo.

Michael, you might want to drop the “ed” on “broadcasted” in the second graph. Not your fault the AJC can’t afford to hire more copy editors.

Coach Garner is the guy who upset about offering kids, he wanted to offer kids earlier in the process and Coach Richt has always said they must earn it. Atleast that is what I was told by my friend (so idk). Plus my student is a prospect who plays QB (pretty good one who is headed out of state) and most of all the other SEC schools told him that UGA doesn’t recruit black QBs, I don’t believe it but it does seem odd that the best QB prospect in GA history doesn’t have an offer yet. Go Dawgs!

Pretty amazing that those commenting here actually think they know whom UGA should offer. Watson is certainly a tremendous player, but he’s a spread quarterback and possibly ill-equipped for Georgia’s pro-like attack (whereas he’d be perfect at Ohio State or, now, at Auburn). UGA apparently HAS offered Kitt and McMillan. Hard to know about Chubb or Harris but, barring injury, the Dogs are pretty well set at RB for the next couple of years (or until Gurley goes pro).

Nick Chubb will remain a Dawg!!!!! Scout.com said he is a 4.5 forty guy, Ive seen him live and this is the fastest kid I have seen in years… He is big, powerful, and has some shifty steps as well. He will absolutely run thru you and will run by you… He is another Gurshall….. Man he would be a sick addition to the dawgs backfield….

@Max I respectfully disagree. I don’t think UGA is set at RB for the next two years. It’s the SEC. Keith Marshall admitted he played this season hurt, Ken Malcome may or may not transfer and no one is quite sure what to expect out of incoming recruit AJ Turman. Todd Gurley is outstanding but again this is the SEC and the RBs get banged up. UGA needs RB, if not for 2013 then definitely 2014

Don’t everyone know UGA waits till the last minute to offer some/most of these kids because they don’t want to have too recall an offer if a better player comes along, whereas all the other schools don’t have that problem. Yes, its the honorable thing to do, but it costs us in the long run. We’ve been playing it that way since coach Richt has been there so don’t expect it too change. And we offer kids no one else has interest in. Some times they pan out, but alot of times they do not. UGA takes alot of chances on kids that have been injured also. UGA must take a closer look at that aspect of their recruiting. yes we’ve done ok I know; but they can do better IMO.

Really UGA runs a pro style offense Jennings , Watson , don’t fit they are great QB with better opportunitys at zone red spread just so happens that most pro style QBs are white and most zone read are Black , some do convert but with there athletic ability fits better in a zone read

There is definately something to be said about UGA’s late scholarship offering history. Whether that has been Richt or Garner’s fault no one knows but it needs to end. Too many great prospects who favor Georgia go elsewhere because of this practice. To state the obvious, this is stupid. Let’s see if it changes now that Garner is at Auburn.

I think all five of these kids should be “automatic” to get offers, not only by UGA and Georgia Tech but almost every SEC and ACC school. They are all national prospects.

Really, get off the stereotypes. Just this year the top running qb’s in college were white guys. Some guy named Johnny Manziel won the Heisman Trophy ran it as well as he threw it. Kansas State’s Collin Klein was a runner up and Florida’s qb Jeff Driskell had a breakout year. All those guys are known for how well they run the ball. The first qb picked in the NFL might be West Virginia’s Geno Smith, He is known as a drop back passer and he is black.

Mark Richt has a tendency to decide on a QB, and never change for 3 or 4 years. That’s great for the guy who he picks, but really sucks for the guys coming in. They may never see the field.
A QB coming in at Ga needs to know, it he is not the chosen one, good luck seeing the field.
At Bama, the backup get’s a lot of playing time. Blake Sims from Gainesville has played enough
that if AJ goes down, we still like our chances.

@Whiskey Breath- some questions

December 31st, 2012
8:47 am

How many meaningful snaps did Blake Sims take at QB?

Name one black quarterback that has started for Saban at Alabama.

How many white QBs are committed to Bama for 2013? How many black QBs for 2013?

How hard did Saban go after Anthony Jennings? We know he wanted Brice Ramsey.

Has Saban offered Deshaun Watson?

What are you qualifications for judging QB talent, compared to Mark Richt? Have you coached two Heisman winners, the all time winningest QB in college history at the time, and the overall #1 pick in the NFL draft.

Why does DJ Shockley have nothing but good things to say about Mark Richt?

Chubb was offered over the weekend. Maybe MC could take a break from the snide comments on UGA recruiting to update the article with that information. But then again, it’s all about the web-hits! Nothing drives the loons to the comments section like some good fodder against the home team. By the way, how many players can be called “arguably the top in GA at their position” in articles and tweets? Just wondering.

Michael, does Harris have the frame to add 40-50 more pounds? I remember Sturdivant who was a dominant tackle, but didn’t have the frame to add the weight he needed (and his knees paid the price). I like hearing about O-Line prospects who are interested in UGA, but 6-5 266 lbs would have a hard time in the SEC.

If they are looking at Ohio State, they U. Meyer must be bringing some kind of coaching charisma with him to them.

I think Georgia and Grantham have already hired a Defensive Line Coach and are waiting for the bowl games to get over before they announce it. Class start on January 7TH , so expect some announcements between the 2ND and 7TH. I would expect any player who will be transferring to do so by the 7TH.
Richt knows of the urgency of getting a Defensive Line coach in place as soon as possible because of signing day for recruits is coming . Freeing up spots on the 85 man rooster is also important for Richt because of last minute decisions.

ON JAN. 11th, 2013, the best Dual Threat Quarterback in America, who grew up a Dawg Fan because his Dad played there, will enroll at….. where else? LSU. Do it Richt, Do it Booboo and Do it Dawgs!!! Richt and Booboo are in it for one thing and one thing only…. the money. Their decision to take Ramsey over ANTHONY JENNINGS is done to please those Dinosaurs who make up UGA’S pasty white Athletic Board. Let’s see: Cam Newton’s a tight end. Nick Marshall (who will play Quarterback at Texas) is a Defensive Back. Blake Sims (who is playing Quarterback at Bama) is an “Athlete”, You don’t offer QB(s) JOSHUA DOBBS (ARIZONA), JONATHAN MCCRARY ( VANDY), who’s father Greg played for the Falcons,ANTHONY JENNINGS (LSU), who’s father played for Georgia, or DESHAUN WATSON (CLEMSON). JENNINGS won the Elite 11 regionals over 90 other Quartebacks, including Ramsey, who didn’t place in the finals. Newnan’s Head Coach, after their game vs. Marietta said “If there’s a better Quarteback in the state, then we don’t want to face him. After Jennings led Marietta’s upset of Lowndes Co. in the playoffs, Lowmdes’ Coach said, “He’s everything and more they said he was.” These are prominent high school coaches in this area who know what the hell theri talking about. Yet Richt and booboo CONVENIENTLY choose to ignore their comments. Jennings is 6′2″ 215 lbs.with a rocket for an arm. 4.5 40. Size 15 shoe so’s he’s going to grow. 3.1 GPA. Will major on Kinesiology at LSU. Plans to take 15 hours there this Spring. Les Miles and LSU evaiuated him as follows: ” He won’t accept mediocrity, in himself or his teammates. We love his downfield throwing accuracy, and in paticular, his ability to EXTEND PLAYS.” Come on UGA fans. This crap is inexcusable, yet it continues to happen. Aren’t you about sick of Richt and Bobo? Haven’t you had enough? 33 friggin years, and stll doing it the “GEORGIA WAY!” It makes you want to PUKE!

tide roll,

Your racism (and blatent trolling) is what actually makes everyone want to puke. MC won’t ban you from the boards because you drive comments (which I am stupidly adding to) and that’s all that matters. Why worry about the comments on your own board when you can poach stories from other sites, recycle us some “exclusive” Nkemdiche comments, and take a long vacation to Hawaii.

And you were wrong on Nick Marshall’s best position. He’s not a QB or a DB, he’s a thief.

It’s either Country Mike or his “CHEWTOBACCO” Buddy, WILL FRIEND. “Yeah boy. That there Nick Marshall a damn thief.” Let him go to Texas, We don’t want him back. That’ll show him. Anyway, he’s just like the rest of ‘em “Couldn’t pick up the system anyway. Know what I mean.” Yeeehoowww and go Dawgs.

Where to start? Remember you are playing the role of a Bama fan on this board.
1. As referenced in an earlier post, do you actually think Blake Sims will ever be a starter at QB at Bama?

2. Why did Saban push hard for Brice Ramsey, yet I have yet to hear if Bama even offered Anthony Jennings, or really wanted him. Can you enlighten us on this, since you are playing the role of a Bama fan on here?

3. Are you aware of why Nick Marshall left Georgia?

4. Are you aware that Nick Marshall requested to play DB rather than QB at UGA, and the reason he gave?

5. Are you aware there are scholarship limits, and most schools usually only take one QB per year? Richt chose Ramsey, and there are many college coaches who would agree that he is the #1 prospect in the state for Georgia’s pro style offense.

6. Why are you acting so upset over Jennings, when Anthony and his father Willie both said they understood the situation with UGA only taking one QB this time? They are gracious, and unlike you Willie is a UGA alum, and is not bitter.

7. How many Heisman QBs have you coached, or #1 NFL overall draft picks? Us Georgia fans will take Richt’s opinion over yours (and I would go so far as to say I would take the first ten names out a phone book also).

8. Do you know who Bama has committed to play quarterback in the 2013 class? Check it out.

Come on tide roll, you should not go through life bitter and jealous of a school like UGA.

After watching Watson play today, Ramsey better be phenomenal, because we let a fantastic player slip away. Really impressed by his poise, his feet, and his arm (he threw one about 60 yards that should have been a completion). He was as good as advertised.

I think Watson will make it big at Clemson. Georgia wants a pro style and I think it be to much work to change him his instinctive nature is to run when play develops slow, Un like a pocket passer but i think him and Jennings made a good choice they will be impact players for Clemson and LSU. We play both Gainesville and Marietta and I think Watson and Jennings both great QB.
