DELAYED: Two UGA football recruits have to postpone enrollment

Two of UGA’s football recruits who expected to enroll early will now have to wait until May to join the Bulldogs.

Defensive tackle John Atkins and outside linebacker Leonard Floyd, who both attend Virginia’s Hargrave Military prep school, both have to finish up a little academic work before they can enroll at UGA. They will not be finished in time to start classes with the Bulldogs on Jan. 7.

UGA DT commit John Atkins (hargravesports.com)

“I was kind of upset about it at first,” Atkins told the AJC on Wednesday. “But I’ve kind of gotten over it because there’s nothing we can do about it. I’m keeping my head up, and going to keep doing the things I was doing at Hargrave.”

UGA has at least 17 commitments from high school, prep school or junior college who said that they planned to enroll early. After the change of plans with Atkins and Floyd, the Bulldogs are down to 15.

The magic number for UGA is 10 early enrollees, because that’s the maximum amount that can count toward last year’s scholarship numbers and allow the Bulldogs to circumvent the SEC over-signing rules with the annual 25-man limit on recruiting classes. It appears that the Bulldogs already have 11 that have been approved by the school’s admission’s office.

UGA expects to finish with 30-35 recruits this year, the largest class in more than a decade.

Atkins and Floyd both signed with UGA last year but failed to meet NCAA requirements. They enrolled at Hargrave this fall and have done well academically, according to Atkins. He said he’s made straight A’s in classes at prep school, while Floyd has posted A’s and B’s.

Atkins said he could not enroll at UGA on Jan. 7 because he has to finish two more weeks of Hargrave classes so his GPA will be high enough for his ACT score to satisfy UGA’s admission requirements. Atkins said Floyd just had to finish one core class at Hargrave, and that both should be cleared to go in May.

“Coach (Mark Richt) called our coach, and said for us to keep our heads up,” Atkins said. “He wants us to keep doing well in school.”

Both of these guy’s are worth waiting for. They just won’t get a jump on the other 2013 recruit’s coming in this summer. The key is to be there by August.

No kids ever get out of prep school early. That is why UGA quit using them 4 or 5 years ago. After the Toby Jackson experiment, I kind of thought that UGA was done with the prep schools altogether. These two must be good enough to justify taking a flyer on the broke “prep school system.”

Surprised Hargrave Military didn’t get him “ALL GOOD” to early enroll. They have been in the business of getting these kids grades and issues resolved fast to get them on campus for years.

What bowl are your buckeyes in? BTW your new coach is highly overrated and would never win in the SEC any longer….that is why he high-tailed it when Tebow graduated. See the SEC defenses had caught up to his offense 2 years earlier BUT he still had Tebow for one more year and Tebow was such a talent at running that offense, Tebow kept it going one last year even though defensive coordinators had figured the offense out. When Tebow left Meyer knew his gig was up so he tried to retire but got so much heat he came back. He pushed through the season and then did “retire”. You see he didnt want to retire…he didnt want to coach in the SEC any longer because he couldnt in there any longer…you ee when he came out of “retirement” he didnt come back to the SEC. He went somewhere new where teams hadnt faced his offense and where he could dominate by that fact alone and the competition wasnt too tough and the coordnators and coaches werent as good as in the SEC. He can win in the Big 10 easily at Ohio St. He can even win in bowl games because the SEC isnt dealing with stopping his offense on regular basis. BUT since other teams in the league had a year already to deal with his offense, that will give them a year to figure it out already and hopefully by the time ohio st is ready to win it all, they will be ready to stop them instead. Urban Meyer isnt all that in the big picture. Because if he was, he would be back in the SEC and would have waited for an opening but he knew Saban was too much as well as all the other top SEC teams, including UGA and SC since his offense was figured out….What bowl is Ohio St in this year? But you sure can talk smack for a bunch of criminals. Players as well as coaches…..thats why you arent in a bowl…..so zip it. You have zero room to mmenton ANYBODY elses team

The 2.6 GPA maybe required for the 2016 class. I’m not sure how that is working fully right now. He does have to have at a minimum 2.0 GPA to get a scholarship from the NCAA.

john gault I know how it works. I’m not sure when the NEW GPA numbers take full effect. I am thinking the 2.6 is in 2016 so now it is still 2.0. I know the NCAA is changing the GPA required number to receive a scholarship. The GPA could be progressively rising each year until 2016 but that I am not sure on.

Like UGa players fail the Drug Test before the Florida game, but the sample has to be sent out to be Officially tested for the Results to be confirmed before the players can miss a game. They have to miss that TUFF New Mexico St team.

News update!!!

GT DL Denzel McCoy was arrested for snatching a purse from a woman at a Buckhead Bar.

Apparently his heart condition allows him enough energy for snatch-and-grab robberies, but not enough to play for GT on the field.

Is he on a medical hardship or on a criminal hardship?

I guess Many Arora will be GT’s version of Ed Tolley from the 80’s & 90’s?

I also wonder if Charlie has lesser rules about smoking the funny grass than Muschamp does?
