Alabama secures top recruit with SEC document (UPDATED)

A rarely-used SEC document may have helped Alabama land the nation’s No. 1-ranked offensive tackle out of prep school.

On Tuesday, Brandon Hill of Virginia’s Hargrave Military prep school announced that he was flipping from Ole Miss to Alabama.

It was under unique circumstances:

Ole Miss was ordered to stop recruiting Hill by its compliance office after it was revealed he had signed an SEC financial aid agreement with Alabama earlier this month, according to the Clarion-Ledger’s Hugh Kellenberger — and that was when Hill was still committed to Ole Miss.

The website also reported that Hill may have not realized what he was doing when he signed off on the papers.

Alabama will likely contend for yet another No. 1-ranked recruiting class (AP)

Alabama will likely contend for yet another No. 1-ranked recruiting class (AP)

There are three things commonly signed by prospective student-athletes headed to the SEC: A national letter of intent (which binds the PSA to a specific institution), a financial aid agreement with the specific institution (which binds the college to the PSA) and an SEC financial aid agreement (which is essentially a gentlemen’s agreement among conference schools).

More specifically, the SEC financial aid agreement is signed by the PSA and their legal guardian with an individual SEC school, and it immediately “ceases” other SEC members from “actively recruiting” the prospect.

It is common for high school seniors to sign all three documents each February. However, post-graduates or prep school players that enroll early at a four-year college usually sign only one — a financial aid agreement that is university-specific.

Under SEC rules, a high school senior enrolling early can only sign one document, the financial aid agreement with a specific institution. However, there’s a loophole for postgraduates.

A compliance officer at one SEC school told the AJC that it was “very unusual” for postgraduates to sign the SEC financial aid agreement. They also gave credit to Alabama for thinking to do it.

When Hill knowingly or unknowingly signed with SEC financial aid agreement with Alabama earlier this month, it prevented Ole Miss from further courtship with the 6-foot-5, 350-pounder. Under the SEC document, Hill could’ve chosen to enroll at a non-SEC school without any penalty. However, had Hill wanted to stick with Ole Miss, he couldn’t have gotten a scholarship from the Rebels for two full academic years.

Essentially, the document secured Hill for Alabama if he wanted to play in the SEC. That’s the most interesting part, along with if this will be a trend between prep school players and SEC schools. One of Hill’s teammates at Hargrave, defensive tackle John Atkins, told the AJC that he has not signed anything with UGA yet.

Outside the document issue, there’s a good chance that Hill might’ve ended up at Alabama anyways. He signed with the Crimson Tide last year but failed to meet NCAA requirements. Hill took an official visit to Alabama earlier this month and remained publicly committed to Ole Miss until a couple of day ago. Hill told BamaOnline that he flipped after having a “heart-to-heart talk” with his mother and that Alabama was his “dream.” He did not mention signing the SEC document earlier this month. Hill, who told al.com he will enroll at Alabama next month, could not be reached for comment on Wednesday night.

Nick Saban tricked the kid into signing papers (no wonder the kid is in prep school) and then told him “You can come here and play or have fun sitting out the next two years.” This is awful by Saban. And it’s really going to look bad when he asks the QB from Walton high school to take a grayshirt

This is such a bummer because Brandon really wanted to play at Ole Miss. I know it for a fact. What would you do if you were told you’d have to sit for two years? I feel for Brandon. It’s a shame that Alabama has to use Chinese torture tactics

Hate it for this kid as Bama was obviously not his first choice. However, this should be a good lesson to him and others – colleges can drop you at any time (even after you have played for a year), but if you sign something as a recruit, your rights are forfeited for at least the next two years. Don’t let any school force you into signing something – especially in Tuscaloosa.

Hotty Toddy….A direct quote from Brandon Hill…

“I signed with Alabama coming out of high school and it was where I wanted to go from the start. I had a heart-to-heart to talk with my mother when I committed to Ole Miss. Then, we had another heart-to-heart talk and I told her this is my dream and I want to live out my life to the fullest and go with Alabama.”

What is your excuse of that? Did Saban give the kid a script and speak off of? If Hill was truly “tricked”, he could appeal it to the SEC/NCAA for a ruling. He is not doing that and is planning on enrolling in Jan. For further reference and quotes, the comments referenced above are in this article.

I am laughing you think that a kid like Hill, who is not from MS, would rather play at a school like Ole Miss over Alabama. Sure, he will certainly have competition at Alabama but seems to me he would rather go to a school that he knows can compete for championships while giving him a great shot at the NFL over going to a school like Ole Miss. Feel sorry for him all you want but you can also do the same when you watch him celebrating a championship at Alabama down the road.

@SECisFootball, what else is Brandon going to say or do now?

He was trapped. The proof is that he didn’t flip weeks ago when he got tricked into signing the papers. If he had known then, he would’ve flipped then.

Hill was tricked. so now he’s going to make the best out of it. What else can the kid say after being duped? He’s never going to admit to it, and I wouldn’t either.

Saban will do anything no matter how unethical it is. Unreal! Yet another reason to not trust Nick Saban.

Wouldn’t it be something if Saban decides he doesn’t want him because a higher ranked Lineman decides to come to Bama.

If it benefits Saban he’ll kick him to the curb and he won’t lose any sleep over it.

You ole siss and dawg fans are hilarious. See how many kids mark richt is signing his year. Umm…..35!! 10 pver he sec limit cause he will back sign. It’s part of it.

Your all just haters. Sucks for you to have a losers mentality and have to devise excuses. Just accept reality and take the tin foil hats off you losers. Grow a pair, man up, and realize its dog eat dog and may be best man win.

Ole miss is a horrible program why old any kid go tnere over auburn, Georgia, Florida, lsu Alabama, s Carolina, or Tennessee? Your ToTALLY irrelevant. Heck, Baylor is more relevant than you right now.

Georgia fans should realize its all fair in sec recruiting and you won’t hear Bama fans complain that rights signing 35 this year cause its not against the rules per say but a loophole. Sabin doesn’t cheat either, and gray shirts happen. Get over it. Just like we get over richt never suspending all your thugs that get arrested.

Hill visited BAMA on December7 and says he recommitted at that time. He signed the documents on that visit. He went public with his commitment this week and seems very happy about his decision. Ole Miss reportedly had a different post-graduate prospect sign the same documents in early December. To suggest that he was “tricked” seems like you have an agenda. Did you talk to Hill or his coach or mother? Or did you just read the article from the Mississippi newspaper?

I’ve said it before and I repeat my warning to all parents of prospective football players for Alabama. Sabin is an evil man and he will lie, cheat and steal and then some including treating your son like a piece of meat. Sabin should be fined by the SEC for his corruption but that will never happen. Maybe the NCAA will take him on.

Ole Miss fans – he waited to tell the OM staff until the dead period started so he wouldn’t catch grief from them as he obviously did care for Freeze et. al.

Ga fans – Saban isn’t evil. If he were evil then these parents and kids wouldnt want to play for him. And oversign blog you referenced?? Puhlease. He doesnt cut or kick kids to the curb. Some get injured and take on medical schollies, some leave as they aren’t cracking the starting rotation, but the biggest thing is that they are really good competitors and choose to compete. Saban doesn’t promise positions, but he promises opportunities. Kids of great character and competitive spirit go to play for him. If they wanted promises and ice cream and Santa Claus…if they wanted to be undisciplined and leave college with a strong likelihood of having an arrest record, no rings, and be an undisciplined dirty player on field…he will choose Richt’s Georgia.

Thanks for the time to slip a little reason in your hate party.

You Georgia fans are funny! Since you cannot get to the big game, you resort to cheap shots against a teams that is competing for championships. You would love to see nick go to Cleveland. Nick promises a great education, an opportunity to compete at there position and he will make you a better man when you graduate from the U of Alabama.
At Georgia they let you play football, and have a option to go to class and have a chance to take a tour of the Athens Clarke county jail. Sounds exciting in Athens. Where would you want your kid to go. Se ya in Miami, not Orlando!

The pure ignorance by some posters on this blog really demonstrates how no one should believe anything they read on the Internet.

No one was “tricked” into signing anything. For any author, blogger or poster to suggest such a thing should be held libel for such writings. I expect that this will be addressed in the coming days after more pressing issues(BCS CG) are taken care of.

The kid obviously skilled his reading comprehension class in prep school. Not Saban or Bama’ fault. It is simply the kid’s fault if he wanted really wanted to go to Ole Miss, which seems to be in doubt. On the positive side for Georgia fans, this might help the Dawgs with the recruitiment of Tunsil vs. Bama, but could hurt vs. Ole Miss.

Ok, make sure I understand, he signed with Bama originally, they helped him get into a prep school, so he could pick his grades up, play a little ball. In so doing they insure their effort by having him sign a commitment that he won’t play in another SEC school, a document which is sanctioned by the NCAA. Hmm sounds fishy to me.
