Overlooked prospect: LB Chase Alford

Georgia is one of the nation’s top five states in producing college football players: Around 200 of the state’s high school seniors will sign with FBS schools in February.

LB Chase Alford

LB Chase Alford

Despite the big numbers, there are still plenty of prospects that get overlooked. We’ll take a look at some of them over the next month.

One guy to watch is LB Chase Alford of Heritage High School in Conyers.

Alford got two big honors within the last week: He was named Defensive MVP of the East team in an all-star football game at the Georgia Dome, and was also named Region 8-AAAAA Defensive Player of the Year.

The 6-foot-2, 235-pounder will also play in two more all-star games, including the North-South game on Dec. 29.

Alford has gotten overlooked by college scouts, and some of it has to do with playing football in Rockdale County, which is becoming more known for its football each year.

He’s a stellar student with a 4.01 GPA, and his older brother walked on at Georgia Tech.

The younger Alford has offers from Air Force, The Citadel, Presbyterian, Illinois State, and Samford, and will take an official visit to Air Force next month. He also has interest from Georgia Tech, South Carolina, Mississippi State, Auburn, Vanderbilt and UConn.

His coaches need to get some tape out there. Show him off !! Congrats to you Chase it’s nice to hear about the grades off the field. Sometimes we get lost in just the teams that make playoffs & winning records. Hope he stays in state

This kid can flat play. And, I’m sure his coaches have shown him off… he does have several offers to 1-AA schools.

Sounds like a good Player and a Great Student. His brother is at Tech so maybe he will be in Atlanta. Tech doesn’t have many open scholarships to offer. He might be on a hold until we see if any Tech players leave early or a flip flop happens.

Great kid, great student, from a great family….. That can kill team chemistry. No white man’s curse, just coaches myopia. Things will work out for him, I have no doubt.

His coaches have to send his tapes out all over the country. They probably have. He is the perfect size for a linebacker. He can add another 10-15 pounds of muscle in college.

Perfect size for 3/4 or the 4/3 defense. What kind of speed does he have will be a big question.

I wish UGA would have offered this kid. Now that Garner is gone, perhaps UGA will sign some smart kids; who, if given the chance can become the next David Pollack.

What Mr. Cumstein is pointing out is this… here’s another example of a white kid who clearly has the skill to play Div. 1 football, but due to his skin color and lack of recruiting stars, he is readily passed up by those who think you can only win with “SPEED”!

He is an outstanding football player and a tremendous student. He is an even better person. Heritage also has another outstanding linebacker on the team in Dustyn Moore. They both are FBS level players. Moore will also be playing in the North vs South game as well.

It is a real shame if these kids get overlooked. Great students and great people of high character. Both can flat out play!!!!!!!!! Moore is 6-foot-1 225lbs and can run. YouTube Dustyn Moore senior season highlights.

I can guarantee you that the Heritage coaches work to get all of their kids looks by college coaches. Chase is a very good football player. He lacks one thing to play at SEC level schools….speed. Good luck to him!

I truly wish the best for this young man and I would like to see Georgia offer. I`m still completely lost as to why Lorenzo Carter DE class of 2014 rated #2 in the nation by 247sports. He from Georgia and is waiting on an offer from Georgia. Florida and Bama have the early jump.

Grantham definitely has his own idea of what athletes he wants to recruit but after giving up 3000 yards in the Alabama game, he needs to reevaluate his criteria on players. This guy could actually stop the run which this years LB’s and D lineman could not do. Looks like this young man will make a fine player and student for a good program. Look for him to land at programs like Vandy, GT, or even Duke. Good luck to this young man.

Wow…playing the so call race card, look many kids get overlooked, it has nothing to do with race. Mosttimes its just not so great recruiting. Also is he fast enough? Cause he has good size if he is truly 6′2

I graduated from HHS in 2001 and played basketball there from 98-01 and football and basketball were so important then and I am so happy that now Rockdale Co is getting some looks from D1 schools for athletes…this article hits the nail on the head bc there are a ton of schools like hhs or RCHS that get looked over…keep working hard guys and it will happen!!!!

Good football player, Great student. I think the challenge this young man may have is that college recruiters look at potential rather than production on this level. Good instincts, lacks athleticism or top-end fast twitch speed to play LB in SEC/ACC/Big 12, imho. He may be an excellent fullback in pro set offenses in the Big 10 (Wisconsin,Penn State) or Stanford. This kid will probably be 260 to 270 lbs in three years. Kinda like buying a used car, some like it, some don’t…

His highlight tape is very good. I see that he already plays in the 3/4 defense. Any school would be pleased to have this young man.

Strong hitter. His stock will rise. He is a D1 player. I believe he can play in the SEC with no problems. He does not have blazing speed, but what linebacker does.

Chase is a good kid and yes he does lack speed. It is just a shame that the Head Coach Frazier does not put this much effort into some of the other players on his team. He had several talented kids on his team this year but I guess he is putting all his eggs in one basket.

Its really surprising read the racism.. The reality of this Chase kid is that he is probably lacking the speed to compete at the highest level of college football. But it has nothing to do with race. Coaches need speed on defense. ook at the guys getting recruited at LB and check the 40 times of the top schools. The offenses are too spread out and the new rules require pursuit . He is probably an inside guy at best.. But wishing him nothing but the best and sure his family is proud of his accomplishments.

You guys are a bunch of race-baiting idiots.

HCs that can make up to $5MM per year don’t care what color the recruit is, if they think that a Recruit can help them to that financial windfall and job security that successful HCs get ,then they will sign that player without hesitation.

This Recruit’s skin color is not holding him back, for every Pollack that was a LEGIT BCS level recruit at FB that blossoms greatly, there are thousands of guys like this recruit that can never get on the filed for a BCS level team.

In summary, stop comparing every white Recruit to David Pollack if you’re not going to also compare him to all the guys that never get on the field.

Chase is a great football player and and even better kid. Our team is full of amazing kids. Football Fan…I’m not sure what you are talking about. I’m not hiding behind a screen name and will be more happy to talk to you about any kid you’d like and thier college propspects. Currently we have 5 kids with Division 1 or 1AA offers and a couple more that may recieve them. We also have several with Div 2 and NAIA offers. So obviously, you did not do enough research before trying to throw a good man under the bus with your ignorant comment. Please feel free to contact me if you’d like to talk further.

maybe now with garner gone from Athens, guys like this will get an offer from Georgia. leadership and an ability to think quickly have been long absent from our team. lack of ability to think quickly cost us the game late for the sec. championship. the inability of the refs to call holding penalties didn’t help either.

Coach Pack. I don’t have to hide behind a screen name either. Yes there are many talented players on that team but I am sure they are not getting the same assistance from the head coach. If the shoe fits wear it. Don’t get mad if its not the truth. Everyone on the outside sees the favoritism. When I find that good man you are talking about I will give him a compliment but until then I will state what I see.

I’m not sure how fast or slow this kid is , but I can tell you this. Mike Gillard #35 for UGA got a scholarship and he is horrible. just watch the BAMA game. it seemed like they ran at him every play and he couldnt get off a block to put a finger on the rb’s. my point is speed is not everything, esp. for an inside backer ( look at brandon spikes 40 time was at the combine ). he was a stud in college and is starting for the NE Pats running a 4.7 – 40 yd dash. Some people can just flat out play. we need to quit recruiting fast kids who cant play and recruit football players.

oklahomadawg

December 28th, 2012

also we need to find some inside backers who can play the run. Bama ran right at us and none of our linebackers could get off their blockers. not one of them attacked the line of scrimmage.

none of our players seem to be taught to “keep moving your feet”. if your feet don’t move, you are not fast, no matter how you are timed when you run from point A to point B in trials. the only recent players who impress by the way they keeps their feet moving are Gurley and A.Ogletree. everyone else seem to stop in their tracks on initial contact. if the refs throw flags on alablaba for holding in the mnc game, then notre dame will win.
