UGA looking for a few good men to finish out 2013 class

UGA is looking for a few good men to finish up its 2013 recruiting class.

The Bulldogs have 30 commitments, and will likely finish up with 33-35 by national signing day on Feb. 6.

Which prospects is UGA targeting to fill out those last remaining spots? Recruiting coordinator Rodney Garner can’t reveal names due to NCAA rules. But he did mention some positions of need to the AJC this week:

“There’s still some defensive line spots that we need to fill because of the attrition that we’re going to experience there,” he said. “There’s probably an offensive tackle there. We definitely need a tackle more than a guard-type body. And another skill guy, the best available athlete we can find.”

Garner feels good so far about this year’s class – which will be Georgia’s largest since signing 31 in 2002.

“We’re excited about this class,” he said. “We knew it was going to be a large class because of some number situations that have arisen. We’re very excited.

“There’s still a couple of guys out there that we’re still targeting, that we’d like to get to close this class out. If we’re able to close on the guys that we have targeted, I feel like we’ll have the opportunity to have an exceptional class, and be able to build a solid foundation going forward.

5-star DT Montravius Adams is on UGA's Christmas list (AJC)

5-star DT Montravius Adams is on UGA's Christmas list (AJC)

“That’s the goal always, when you make projections on what you’re going to sign at each position, and what’s your overall class makeup going to look like. Sometimes you hit that number, sometimes you don’t.

“The biggest thing, you just don’t want to have success on signing day. You like to have some continuity and be able to sustain it. Hopefully, we’ll be able to keep these guys, and they’ll be able to develop into the type of players we’re looking for.”

UGA’s top remaining targets likely include 5-star DT Montravius Adams of Dooly County High School, JC DT Toby Johnson, RB Alvin Kamara of Norcross, OT Laremy Tunsil of Lake City, Fla., and LB Reuben Foster, formerly of Troup, among other prospects.

  • RELATED: UGA announced the signing of one player on Wednesday, the first day for junior college players. Defensive tackle Chris Mayes of Mississippi Gulf Coast junior college signed with UGA. The 6-foot-4, 330-pounder out of Spalding High School originally signed with the Bulldogs two years ago but did not meet NCAA entrance requirements. On Thursday, UGA announced the signing of Jonathon Rumph, a 6-foot-5 wide receiver from Brookland-Cayce High School who had played the last two seasons at Holmes junior college.

Hopefully these guys are resigned to play together. When you have a class like this one, the players begin to see the writing on the wall about what a great class and future they have together at Georgia. These players, in addition to the others already committed, are ready to make history. Montravius, Laremy, Toby, Reuben, and Alvin… It’s your time. Go Dawgs!

The dawgs signed 31 back in 2002??? Holy cow. Looks like Saban and Nutt were wayyyyy behind the oversigning curve. I guess it was Richt who in fact started this abusive practice.

I still can’t believe uga is going to sign up to 35 players. WOW!!! This program definitely needs to be investigated for oversigning so much.

Where are all those dawg fans anyway who always whine about Saban or Nutt oversigning???

Where dey at?????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

Hey Oversigning you are either very ignorant or you are knowingly trying to stir things up. CMR has absolutely NEVER over signed and he NEVER will (including this year). UGA is signing a large class this year because many of the scholarships will count towards the 2012 Class due to attrition.

Contrast that to Coach Sick Satan who has an established history of either running guys off in order to make room for his incoming class. Or merely telling the young man wait until next year and I will honor that commitment (wink-wink nod-nod).

Every year, Rodney Garner gets rumors started that some other school wants him to he can leverage us for a raise. It’s BS. Auburn doesn’t want him, nor does anyone else. I wish they did, however. We need some fresh blood with our recruiting. Rodney Garner is lazy and living off his reputation from 10 years ago. This Garner rumor is almost as funny as the Bobo rumor. There’s no way either leaves Athens.

Obviously, you either don’t know the signing rules of the NCAA/SEC, or you can’t count. I suppose the third possibility is that you can not comprehend simple instructions either.
Just try and keep the number 85, on a piece of paper each time, you think you understand something about recruiting and maybe, and this is a stretch, you can put the numbers down on paper needed to figure it out..

Good. We’re finally going to try and get close to 85 scholarships. I’m tired of being in the 70s and 60s. We’ve basically been on probation for the last 3 or 4 years.

R&B, Obviously, you’ve never known the Alabama scholarship numbers. Saban took over a program that had been drained by probation, similar to the pickle Richt found himself by all the desertions and expulsions and small classes UGA went through. It’s called restocking.

The only way a school can consistently sign over 30 players a year is by dumping the ones who did not work out from the previous three years, since 4 times 30 equals 120, some 35 players above the NCAA limit of 85. If I were a kid looking for a school to play for with a four or five year time horizon, I would stay away from places like UGAG, where they will dump you in a minute if you have any defect what so ever, imho!!

UGA lost 25 ( I believe the list I saw had 28 on it) scholarship players the last 3 years or so OTHER than graduation or early NFL departure. The numbers are worse than they seem. 3 or 4 walkons were given scholarships in the last 12months……..

There is no such thing as oversigning. The NCAA does not permit it and a scholl CANNOT do it. What does happen is schools over offer. That means that they have more accepted offers than available spots. UGA has room for 34-36 spots. If they have 37 commitments then they would be in the same league with Greyshirt U ( Alabama)

It’s funny seeing these Saban worshipers on here whining about ”Oversigning”.

Yes, the SEC did finally try and do something about Saban’s favorite practice. Yes, it may put a hault to Saban’s biggest advantage of superior depth that’s been built at the expense of all of Sabans castaways.

What will Saban do now that his advantages are being taken away? Will he really honor his new four year scholarships pledge and quit kicking them out the door? Will he see his advantage slipping away and bolt to the NFL?

Yes, this class will already go along way toward closing the depth gap. What will they say when Adams, Tunsil, Foster and Kumara all decide to be UGA Dawgs?

Saban worshipers need to enjoy Sabans ill gotten advantages while they last.

I am fairly certain that I know what oversigning is and that it cannot be done. I also know that you are allowed 25 per class with exceptions being made for various reasons ( early departure to the NFL, dismissal from school, or signing less the year before). As UGA signed less last year, they can bring in more this year (19 last year which means 6 more spots) plus the potential early departures of some JR defensive players and the dismissal of a few guys last year which means that UGA has 34-36 available spots. Again this is not “oversigning” which is still the wrong word as there is not a school in the country that can oversign, just over commit

@Genius, I believe in the case of oversigning they actually have more than the alloted numbers put pen to paper. I think they are trying to hedge against people not qualifying etc.

As you said this isn’t what Georgia has done for 2013. Look at Houston Nutt at Ole Miss a few years back. I believe Nutt signed 37 in a year where he only had 25 spots. I also believe his hedge worked out because I think they only ended up with 25 or so of the 37 on campus by football season.

AltamahaDawg

I don’t think early departures, or dismissals gives you extra spots for the NEW class. It might free up spots in the 85, if that were the problem, but we are still limited by the 25 minus early enrollees.

You don’t just get the leftover # from the year before. So its not just that we get 6 extra player in this class. You have to have them count in LAST years class, by enrolling in last years class. (by January)

Thanks, we will. And they last a long time. National Championships, perhaps 3 in four years, have quite the staying power. Not quite 33 years, but you know that better than anyone.

And as somebody popinted out, we only had an actual class of 14 last year (because some had counted the year before). Assuming we could EE 11 guys , we could sign as many as 36, and that not be “oversigning”. That would be perfectly fine within both: the new rules and the old informal understanding that most schools abided by even before the need to force it on a a couple of offenders.

oversigning being having to “cull” somebody before August to meet the longstanding 85 player hard limit.

OT Trenton Brown, who signed with Florida yesterday! All Georgia athletes. Throw in our future All-American left tackle, Brandon Greene from Cedar Grove, who BAMA signed last year, and one has to truly wonder if you and Richt know what the hell you’re doing! 32, no wait, 33 years!! Damn Man. No wonder.

The rule is actually to end up with 85 by the start of the new season, so schools can indeed oversign. If it were simply overcommit, that would have been solved on NSD. The new SEC rule on class size doesnt change that. For example, A School could sign 30 players class, and meet that (becasue of the count back)…….but if they only had 25 (anticipated) spots to give, thats still not prohibited. It’s up to them to figure it out over the summer. THATS what folks were doing. They were hedging against the enevitable fallout, but if it didn’t come naturally, the problem was the perception that it was “helped along”.

They still can, but limiting 25 (and I believe there is also a maximum 100 over the cource of 4 classes) just makes the math very difficult over time to end up with too many SIGNED for the spot allowed in any given Fall.

Dawgs have an excellent class already and, assuming they get a couple of their remaining targets, will end up with a class that easily will rank in the top 5 nationally. Richt is getting it done.

(Paul Johnson at Tech is not. Johnson is a good coach but a weak recruiter, placing Tech in the difficult situation of being outmanned by SEC teams like UGA. He inherited some talent at Tech when he arrived and did fine with it. But the talent just isn’t there anymore.

In fact, I’d like to see Richt get a little help with keeping top talent in state. But he won’t get it from Paul Johnson.)

And for you and Booboo to”Evaluate”, 6′2″ 210lb. QB stud, and Georgia LEGACY (!) Anthony Jennings, who represented the Southeast region in the Elite 11 finals in Los Angeles. To basically ignore Newnan’s and Lowndes County coaches calling him the best QB in the State. To allow him to sign with LSU and enroll in January. LSU, who rolls back on your schedule next year. This crap borders on criminal negligence. No wonder you ain’t gonna win a National Title. Hell, we’ve got 3, LSU 2, Florida 2, Auburn, with tight end prospect Cam Newton,1. It’s not even that big a deal anymore! Y’all go 33 years without one, yet SEC teams are going to win 7 straight! Something’s wrong with y’all. It’s embarrassing.
