Vonn Bell: Decision could be near for 5-star safety

Over the last few months, the recruiting process has taken a backseat to high school football for Vonn Bell, the 5-star safety from Ridgeland.

All of that will change after Saturday when Ridgeland plays Sandy Creek for the Class AAAA state championship at 5:30 p.m.

After Saturday, Bell will listen to the sales pitches and maybe visit his three finalists of Alabama, Ohio State and childhood favorite Tennessee. UGA was eliminated when Bell trimmed from seven to three schools.

“Nothing has changed with recruiting recently, and Vonn isn’t talking to anybody about it until after Saturday,” Ridgeland coach Mark Mariakis told the AJC.

“About halfway through our season, he cut it off to focus on our team, which we appreciated. It has worked out well for Vonn.

“After our season is over on Saturday, I think it will be soon that he will make his decision between those three schools.”

Bell has had a monster senior season for Ridgeland, and surprisingly probably made more of an impact on offense than defense: Bell has 136 total tackles on defense, while posting 1,039 yards and 21 total touchdowns on offense.

“He’s the most productive player I’ve ever coached,” Mariakis said. “I don’t want to say best player, but he may be. I just don’t like using that phrase.

“We’ve had some really good players here. We’ve had six guys sign major D1 scholarships over the last five years, from Alabama to Oklahoma State. They were all great players at their positions. Vonn is that great player on both sides of the ball. He’s phenomenal on offense and defense.”

TN made his top 3. Dooley screwed it up, but the kid obviously loves TN. AllButch has to do is make an effort to make him feel wanted and he’s a vol.

Dang. More Bama fans on here than anyone else. Sounds like you guys think that Bama has more scholarships to give than anyone else. Passing them out like Halloween candy.

Too bad he eliminated UGA. Sounds like a Rambo kind of guy, you know, the all American safety that we lose this year. Oh well, can’t win them all. Good luck to the kid no matter where he goes.

I saw Bell play in person this year and I believe he would be best served to play offense at the next level. His athleticism is off the charts but his cover skills and tackling are not that good. He tries to tackle everyone high. He can get away with that in high school but if he tackles like that in D1 ball he will be picking himself up off of his backside a lot. I saw him against Calhoun and on a lot of pass plays he looked lost and was struggling to cover Calhoun’s receivers.(none of the receivers for Calhoun are being offered D1 scholarships at the present time)

He’s called a state of Georgia prospect. Yet, until this year he played in Tenn, he lives in Tenn and attends HS as an out of district student in Georgia. Doesn’t quite make sense. Good luck at the Ohio State.

After seeing Jayme Thompson in the Ohio Division 2 state title game I don’t know how much better this player can be. Thompson may be the sleeper recruit to play right away for OSU. Watch this player in the Championship game and you will understand what I’m talking about.

Derek Dooley was one of the worst coaches to ever coach in the SEC.I am a Tennessee fan and hope Vonn comes to Knoxville. If i was a betting man he will go to the crimison tide.Dooley had a bad relationship with local high school coaches who said he was arrogant.Where that came from i have know idea he never won anything anywhere.I will say this for Butch Jones he can coach and has won everywhere he has been.I dont know how big he can win at Tennessee in the SEC.We will not look as sorry as we have the last 3 years with that jack a$$ Derek Dooley as HC.

Tremendous talent,……was a treat to watch in person this fall. That said,…two of those tackles he registered came after our sophomore RB trucked him,….and he held on until help got there.

Demarre Kitt took Vonn Bell to school in the recent state champ game. UGA really needs to go after Demarre Kitt hard.
