Shaq Wiggins: UGA CB commit to visit South Carolina, Florida, others

Posted at 2 p.m. Thursday

Shaq Wiggins says he’s “100-percent committed” to UGA after taking an official visit with the Bulldogs last weekend. But he’s still going to take other recruiting trips.

The 5-foot-9, 160-pound cornerback will lead Sandy Creek High School against Ridgeland for the Class AAAA state championship at 5:30 p.m. Saturday at the Georgia Dome.

Wiggins has been committed to UGA for nearly a year and is still being heavily pursued by other colleges. Next month, Wiggins is scheduled to take official visits to South Carolina, Florida, Ole Miss and Texas A&M. The Gamecocks are considered UGA’s biggest competitor.

“Yes, I’m still committed to Georgia but I’m looking at other opportunities,” Wiggins told the AJC. “This is a real hard decision for me. It has become real hard for me right now. I really don’t know who to believe. I’m just going through the process slowly.”

During last weekend’s visit to UGA, Wiggins met with defensive coordinator Todd Grantham. Wiggins said he was told three other commits will likely play corner – Brendan Langley, JJ Green and Reggie Wilkerson.

“I have no problem with that; there’s going to be competition wherever I go,” Wiggins said. “I think I will have a fair shot at getting a position at Georgia.”

What did UGA say about the other visits? “They want what is best for me … but they also made it clear that they want me at Georgia,” Wiggins said.

Despite his size, Wiggins is considered one of the state’s best corners. “I just think his natural cover ability and his ball skills are great,” Sandy Creek coach Chip Walker said. “He does all those things so good, it makes up for anything in terms as not being as big as other corners. He’s a football player; that’s what matters.”

There are more UGA connections at Sandy Creek:

  • Alan Knott, OL: The 6-5, 280-pounder may be the most SEC-ready lineman in the state. Knott has committed to South Carolina. “He’s as good of an offensive lineman as we’ve ever had,” Walker said. “He’s big and physical, but he’s also athletic. He’s got a little nasty streak in him, too.”  There have been rumors that UGA might go after Knott if the Bulldogs miss on other OL targets such as Laremy Tunsil. However, Walker said he hasn’t had any conversation with UGA about Knott.
  • Demarre Kitt, WR: The 6-1, 190-pounder is another one of the state’s top juniors, and recently de-committed from Georgia. He’s now considering Clemson, USC and the Bulldogs. “I don’t know what there’s not to like,” Walker said. “He’s a big body, he can run away from people, he’s a great route runner, has great hands and he can get yards after the catch. He’s just a complete wideout.” Kitt has caught 68 passes for 1,151 yards and 11 touchdowns.

Any votes for an early signing period for football like there is for basketball so we can do away with all of this mess?

Shaq is going to be a starting CB at UGA – maybe not as a true freshman but he will be a starting CB at UGA and he knows the coaching situation there is stable. Spurrier is 67 going on 68 and will be around about one more year before moving on to his golf course at Del Web. Saban is about to rabbit over there at Bummer – will it be the Cleveland Browns in 2013 (don’t think so) or the Texas Longhorns in 2014 (most likely). Derrick Henry take note – Bummer’s great OL won’t be there to block for you as two are graduating and at least one more is going to the NFL. Saban won’t be there past your freshman year and he’s taking his gofer, Kirby Smart, with him. Probably to late for you to flip back to UGA as Kamara is a silent commit. You will get your 10 carries a game as a freshman ’cause you are good and without that OL they will need you to pound it in there for 3-4 yards on 1st down. Yeldin and Tenpenny will get it on 2nd and 3rd down. A couple of other Georgia natives ,at RB, on your roster will be wearing out the pines.

RJ won’t be starting at WR for A&M. They have 8 total WRs committed in this class. #1 (6′5″) and #6 (6′6″) will be ahead of JaQuay who is really about 6′2″. Unfortunately A&M is going to lose their two Alll -SEC OL to the NFL.

Don’t see Langley starting as a freshman at UGA either. good talent and size but still raw skill and needs coach up. Swann will start at boundary corner and the guy from Florida, Reggie Wilkerson, will get a good chance to start.

The thing about Shaq isn’t his height – weighs around 160 lbs and needs to get to around 175 lbs. to tackle these big guys. One year in the weight room will get him close.

JJ Green at CB would be a MISTAKE. Camden was on t.v. 3 times this season and it was clear that Green wanted no part of contact while playing defense.

Demarre Kitt is the real prize, here. UGA really needs to reel him back into the fold. Best in-state WR this year or next.

Tonny Connor 5 star (#1) safety from Miss. has come up at the last minute and said UGA will be in his top 5. Ole Miss is considered his leader and he wants to set up an official visit with UGA in the near future – UGA already has 5 safeties committed. Six Safeties in one class is a bit much – long shot any way. Another surprise Matthew Thomas ( 5 star #1 OLB) wants an official visit with UGA – has no favorite at this time.

To Rick James,

Jaquay Williams is 6′3”, not 6′5” and Shaq will not be matched up vs. the bigger WRs…..that is what the 6′1” Langley is for. Shaq is their to matchup vs. the smaller quick guys………like the Ace Sanders and Trey Burton of the world who have had bid days vs. UGA in the past.

Shaq Wiggins sounds like a Brent Grimes clone. He may not have an elite 40 time or be very tall but he has excellent quickness and ball skills.

Hope to see Shaq between the hedges for the next 4 years winning games for the home state university.

Saban’s going to RABBIT – could be 2013 or 2014 but he’s gone. He has been seen on the TEXAS campus several times the last two years and those boys have deep deep pockets – as deep as their oil rigs. Saban’s wife said he doesn’t come home happy after a win any more – sure sign of a restless rabbit.

Shaq ain’t going to Florida – already loaded with top flight DBs in this class and he ain’t going to S.C. – He’s going to UGA. Spurrier is good for one more year and he lost his big hoss Lattimore to the NFL and he has Clowney for 2013 and he’s gone too. Spurrier will leave S.C. without reaching his goal to win the SEC and that matches the goal he missed while playing QB at Florida – ’cause UGA shut him out all four years he was there! That’s why Spurrier despises the Dawgs.

With Lattimore gone this year and Clowney gone next year, do you really think that spurrier will stay in South Carolina for the long term?

@GoBigDawg….S.C. only lost one game in two years without Lattimore in lineup after being injured…..a total of ten games. You talk as if Lattimore and Clowney are the only players on the Carolina roster. Spurrier just extended his contract to six years and has publically stated he will be there for a minimum of four more years and longer if his health stays the same.. You guys have been saying he would retire next year since he arrived at Carolina……and he’s still going strong.

Fact is this kid see’s UGa has over recruited his position. I see him ending up with Spurrier. Talking about Spurrier retiring. He just signed an extension thru 2017 so it looks like 5 more years of Spurrier beating those Dawgs. You all might need to call the Humane Society after this years beating.

I think the young man should expect that UGA will also continue to look around as well, and with only two months to go, until signing day, if they snag another DB, there might not be a place for him, in the 2013 class. He needs to quit playing around at this point and be solid and either honor his commitment or back out of it, if he wants to keep looking around. It is not good to try and hold one school hostage and look around for someplace you might like more. That is what you should have been doing before you made a verbal commitment to UGA.

Hopefully playing time is not the reason Shaq is looking at other colleges. Grantham has proven he will play the best Defensive players. Thank God playing time is not determined any longer because of promises and entitlement rewards to get recruit’s to come to Georgia. If Shaq is the best then he will play. If he is not then he will be a fill in unless someone get’s hurt and he is the next best one on the depth chart, at which time he will move into the starting roll. If Shaq can not earn first team playing time then how does he expect to be able to play Pro ball. Going to another team is not going to get him to the Pro’s, faster . Shaq has to still prove he can cover taller kids who are as good as him in high scholl and he has to prove he can learn the play book and not miss assignments. Every bit of the proof of his ability is on him. I hope Shaq doesn’t think maybe going to another program other than Georgia will mean that he doesn’t have to get the job done .
I don’t understand what the problem is with Shaq. Does he really expect a coach to promise he will be on the first team whether he deserves it or not? Man up son, this is not high school any longer. University of Georgia just offered you a full scholarship. The rest is all on you to prove that you are good enough.
