AP All-America team loaded with talent from Georgia

How much talent is there in the state of Georgia?

The AP released its All-America teams this week. There were six players from Georgia on them, and not one of them signed with UGA or Georgia Tech out of high school.

Not one — although Jarvis Jones of Carver-Columbus High School later transferred from USC to UGA.

Bradley Roby, the Ohio State All-America CB from Peachtree Ridge High School (AP)

What about the other five?

  • Chance Warmack, OG, Alabama, Westlake High School: Signed with Alabama over Auburn, South Carolina and Rutgers. No offer from UGA or Georgia Tech.
  • David Yankey, OT, Stanford, Centennial High School: He claimed early offers from both UGA and Georgia Tech, but it’s unclear how heavily either school recruited him. Yankey was serious about academics, and ended up picking Stanford over his other finalists of Duke, Wake Forest and South Carolina.
  • Kevin Minter, LB, LSU, Peachtree Ridge: Minter grew up a Georgia Tech fan, and that was the school where he attended his first Junior Day. Minter said the Yellow Jackets never really followed up, and he accepted an early offer from LSU. Had 19 tackles in the state championship game for Peachtree Ridge.
  • Bradley Roby, CB, Ohio State, Peachtree Ridge High School: Roby committed early to Vanderbilt, then flipped late to Ohio State. UGA extended an offer the week before signing day but it was too late.
  • Stephon Tuitt, DE, Notre Dame, Monroe Area High School: He had offers from Georgia Tech and UGA, and almost ended up signing with the Yellow Jackets. Tuitt originally committed to Notre Dame, then switched to Georgia Tech after telling the AJC “I think Tech is where my heart was the whole time.” The next day, Tuitt flipped back to the Irish after coach Brian Kelly immediately hopped on a jet to Georgia for a face-to-face meeting.

This is the reason Georgia fans and alumni, such as myself, wonder why Georgia can’t “at least” get to the title game. it’s the coaching, plain and simple, no matter how good we think it is. There is a need for some fresh blood on this staff because four schools will be bringing in new coaches with an even more fresh perspective and selling points. The schedule gets harder, the competition is heating up, and Georgia could not take advantage of the opportunity.

Georgia can’t get them all; that’s common sense. But Georgia is the only school in the nation that has powerhouse resources but is not a powerhouse. Folks from out of state believe we over hype our program, but that is the reason why. The program has not produced any results bordering on greatness, but all of the resources are in place, including players. No other school possesses such riches, the lone exceptions being, well, no one. USC has to compete against Stanford, UCLA, and Cal for California prospects. Texas has about 5 schools in state to compete against. Florida has 2-3 other schools to worry about. Georgia has but one. Most of the time, they don’t even compete for the same recruits. SMDH

@WDE

I’m only speaking in realistic terms. This is not a championship winning coaching staff. Is this what we wanted? Is this what we expected? If we expect “winning seasons” only, then we are doing just peachy perfect. But that is not what we expect. Can we do better? That’s like asking me can I get a better looking woman. of course we can do better. But if you operate out of fear, then one would never know.

Slydog, be careful what you wish for. Changing for the sake of change does not make sense. There is a 50/50 chance of totally ruining the program and setting it back years, a la the Vols.

If we had these players we would be playing for a national championship. We took Jordan Love over Bradley Roby. UGA does a terrible job of recruiting Gwinnett County. Best Football in the state.

LSU went 13-1 and 12-2 respectively when they won. Alabama was 13-1 last year and 12-1 this year. It’s not about doing better than 11-2. It’s about “finishing the drill.”

Tenesse went from Fulmer to Kiffin to Dooley. They screwed up because of lack of clear direction. They picked too noobs to run their program after they fired a legend. Mike Shula wasn’t doing too bad at Bama before he was fired in lieu of Saban. Meyer was successful everywhere he went before Florida hired him to replace another noob/boob they had no business hiring. What if that replacement were Charlie Strong? Kirby Smart? Mike Gundy? etc. Would you make the same argument?

Traitors- How dare someone want to live in another area? How dare someone desire a superior education at Stanford? How dare a kid commit to an out-of-state school when the in-state schools come in at the last moment with an offer? how dare Warmack take a scholly from bama even though UGA and Tech didn’t offer? He should’ve been a walk-on!

UGA’s recruiting program needs a MAJOR overhaul! Recruiting (and of course, winning) plays a major roll in Alabama’s success, not to mention, LSU, Fla., and South Carolina. I keep reading about players who wanted to go to UGA but they never followed up. This happens time and time again. I’m sure there is more to their story than that but it’s strange that it keeps coming up! The State of Georgia is loaded with talent, 159 counties in the state and more than one high school in each county.

I see that Coach Richt had a visit in Buford, Ga. the very next day after the championship game. His personal involvement and interest will go a long ways toward fixing this problem but he can’t do it all by himself. Let’s face it, players do not go to Alabama thinking it’s a better school than UGA. They go because Alabama is a winner and they are a winner because they go after the really good players and convince them that Alabama is the place for them……simply put…..they beat UGA to the punch! Let’s turn this aroung and get busy!! GO DAWGS!!

WDE, all things being equal, I’m in 100% agreement with you. But everything is not equal across the board. The culture has turned into “anything at all costs” mentality. Richt is slowly becoming a dinosaur in this regard. It’s sad, but it’s the way of the college football world. As other programs pass you by, the money will dry up, and the first thing out the window is integrity.

Haven’t you heard? Saban is working on a deal with the Cleveland Browns and he is now comparing it to the deal he is working on with the Texas Longhorns. Saban changes colors about every four years and he is about to RABBIT. Saban is loyal to Saban. His wife says he does not come home happy after a win any more. A true sign the rabbit is about to run. Texas has a much larger recruiting base than Bummer and Texas has deep, deep pockets – even deeper than Bummer alumni and the Cleveland Browns. Someone suggested the state of Bummer “sell” their Department of Education to get needed revenue to keep Saban but it was pointed out that Bummer doesn’t have a Department of Education.

first thing out the door is integrity-if this would get UGA 14-0 and a national championship-then to hell with everything else; sell your soul, and get that championship. Most of the bloggers on AJC would be happy as hell about that. No wait a minute, then they would bitch that the opponents scored too many points. Always something to bitch about.

The only guy off of that list above that did NOT have the Academics for GT was Warmack out of Westlake, yet the excuse making segment of the GT fanbase that defends Pajamas (the BLTs) will claim that Academics is our main problem at GT.

Like I have said on more than one occasion, back in the days of Bill Curry only 8-10 of the Top-50 players in Ga. could qualify Academically for GT, in the era that Pajamas has had to compete in, roughly 30-35 out of the Top-50 players in Ga. can qualify to major in Business Admin at GT.

Academics is no excuse for GT to not Recruit better, that list above is yet another bit of anecdotal evidence that supports my position on GT’s poor Recruiting.

Calculus can be taken as the last class in the last semester in some cases at Tech. Besides that, what else is hard? Instead of whining about Georgia and GA Southern being approved for engineering degrees, they should be lobbying for a few more liberal arts degrees. This might actually elevate the Institute closer to ranks of their “perceived” peers: Cal Tech, MIT, Stanford, etc.

Well Sly, based on your criteria, there ARE some other teams around that overhyped failures, in most cases more “overhyped” than UGA. Let’s mention a few here okay:

Ohio State
Michigan
USC
Notre Dame
FSU
Oklahoma
Penn State
UCLA
Miami
Stanford
Nebraska
Texas…

Almost all these schools have football programs that have underachieved (most for a decade or more), and should replace their coaching staffs immediately…

I think I’d even go so far as to add UF to this list also. I mean are there any players left on that roster who have ever won a MNC? Coaches? Bunch of losers then, right?

Seriously, let’s face a few facts here. And I’m doing this out of frustration, because I’m tired of hearing all the whining although I know 1 of 2 things about the whiners (Flat Tire, Moist, Slydog among others): (1) You’re not a Georgia fan, just here to stir the pot or (2) You seriously have issues. I’d bet each of you fit into category 1.

1. UGA is indeed thought of as an elite program, hence the high rankings, compiled by individuals from around the nation. Add in the computer element, and they’re still considered elite. Funny, I travel fairly extensively, and I see UGA gear in the stragest places. I don’t wear alot myself, but I lost my last Bulldog hat to a security guard at Hong Kong (I think) Airport, because she recognized it and begged me for it.

2. The Bulldogs, just a few weeks ago, played the dominant CFB to the wire in what is already being billed as the best SECC ever by the pundits. On a neutral field, with all the marbles at stake, Georgia was within 4 yards of winniing the game. Funny thing is, if UGA is SO terrible and undermanned, shouldn’t you guys be giving kudos to the coaching staff for motivating and preparing the team? And the players themselves, for playing their hearts out?

The truth is, both teams were well prepared, and the players showed guts and determination throughout the game. There are no ties, my team lost. Congrats to Bama, they played a great game. They had to in order to win.

3. Recruiting? Really? The staff has pulled in and developed top notch players, virtually across the board.

QB? Number 2 in the nation
RB? First team All-SEC
WR? Did we ever really miss AJ like we thought we would?
TE? 2 good ones already playing

DL? Dominant at times, even with injuries, Need more depth…it’s coming
LB? I don’t even need to comment here
CB? Outstanding
S? Better than the LBs.

OL – my only real concern in our recruiting, but we have potential going forward. The staff needs to keep trying to get 4 or 5 quality linemen in EACH class

That’s all. I’ve got…

You know what’s funny you idiots? Al of those programs that smart ass GTDOG named have turned over coaching staffs 2-3 times during the past 12 years because of underachievement, save Penn State. So Sly aint slack, I’m just able to take my face out of someone else’s butt hole to know when it stinks. Winning in a sport of which “competition” is a basic component, winning it all, whether it be 14-0 or 10-4 or 12-2 or whatever, would give no one a reason to complain, idiots. There is not one Giants fan who complains about going 10-6 and 9-7 every year as long as they , hhh hhmm, let me clear my throat, “WIN IT ALL.” But I bet you same idiots comment on a Falcons article complaining about an 11-2 pro team and it’s not even the post-season yet. THANK YOU HATERS for making me look even smarter!!!!
