UGA DT target Montravius Adams: Living up to the hype

Football fans around Atlanta will get a chance on Saturday to observe the state’s best prospect not named Robert Nkemdiche.

Montravius Adams, a 6-foot-4, 295-pound defensive tackle, will lead Dooly County High School against ECI for the Class A state championship (public) at 11:30 a.m. Saturday at the Georgia Dome.

Which UGA defensive target do you want the most?

UGA is considered to be one of the frontrunners, along with Clemson and Florida, for Adams, who is also looking at Alabama and Auburn. He will likely take official visits to all five colleges before making his decision.

Adams is ranked as the No. 2 overall prospect in the state and No. 6 overall in the nation in the 247sports composite rankings, which combines the rankings of ESPN, Rivals, Scout, and 247sports.

The 5-star recruit may be one of UGA’s top two remaining recruiting priorities for the 2013 class on defense, along with JC defensive tackle Toby Johnson. (Of course, the Bulldogs also wouldn’t mind adding LB Reuben Foster, who de-committed from Auburn last week)

How good is Adams? “God gifted him with a lot of ability, and he’s worked really hard to improve on some of the things that God gave him,” Dooly County coach Jimmy Hughes told the AJC.

“He’s 6-4, playing at 295 pounds. He’s under 300 for the first time the last couple of weeks. It came about when he had the flu. He was out for a week when we didn’t play last month. He was sick with the flu, and he was in and out of the hospital that week. He dropped about 20 pounds. He has gained a little bit back but not much. He now has some of the quickness that really showed last year when he was lighter and about an inch shorter.

“He’s extremely quick around the football. His first couple of steps are like a guy that weighs 195 pounds. He runs to the football extremely well. He’s kind of difficult to run at, and he’s very difficult to run away from because he’s so fast from the backside. To me, he’s done everything he’s been advertised to do.”

Montravius Adams put up big numbers as a senior and led his team to the state championship game. He is likely one of the top two remaining defensive targets on UGA's board, along with JC DT Toby Johnson (AJC)

Montravius Adams put up big numbers as a senior and led his team to the state championship game. He is likely one of the top two remaining defensive targets on UGA's board, along with JC DT Toby Johnson (AJC)

Adams is a one-man wrecking machine in the state’s smallest classification. He has 127 total tackles, 34 tackles for losses, 7.5 sacks and 43 quarterback hurries. Adams also handles the team’s kickoff and punting duties (averaging 34.5 yards per punt).

Nothing has really changed with recruiting over the last few weeks, except for that Adams is in the process of setting up his first official visit to Florida immediately after the Under Armour all-star game in St. Petersburg, Fla. on Jan. 4. Florida defensive coordinator Dan Quinn is scheduled to stop by Dooly County on Tuesday morning, while Auburn’s Gus Malzahn let Hughes know he will be at Saturday’s state championship at the Georgia Dome.

UGA, Florida and Auburn all dispatched assistants to observe Adams in last Friday’s semifinals.

“His other visits are going to come fast and furious as soon as the first of the year gets here,” Hughes said.

“I think he’ll be ready on signing day, and he told me he may even make a commitment before then. He told me he may move it up. If he gets to a point where he’s ready to shut it down, he’s going to shut it down. The recruiting process has taken a toll on him because there has been very little ‘back off’ from the colleges – and I understand that. I understand he’s a real good player, and any school will be proud to have him. He’s a good young man.

“The recruiting process will wear on a young man and his family. He’s going to get the point where he’s ready to decide, probably before signing day. If he doesn’t, that’s fine. If he does, he said he would let me know and we would set up some kind of way so everybody can get it all at one time, so somebody won’t be mad they got scooped. But there’s going to come a point where there’s going to be some disappointed schools. He’s just the type of guy, he likes all of the coaches that have recruited him. He really likes them a lot. It’s a tough decision.”

Both lineman would contribute next year,so if you want to go to UGA commit and help get some of the other players on the board to come, remember team first.

Don’t get your hopes up on Montravius dawg fans.

Once upon a time Reuben Foster told his best friend Tray to follow him to Alabama because of their weight lifting program. What about uga’s weight lifting program? Don’t they have one there?

To all you Dawg haters and trolls, your envy of our program is obvious. We have a program that’s led by not only a great coach but more importantly, a great man, and the sky is the limit for the Red and Black. I LOVE reading your negative posts because they ooze jealousy…. keep them coming.

He’s “KINDA DIFFICULT TO RUN AT.” That’s the same thing Eddie Lacy and Yeldon said about y’all’s defense.”They were kinda diificult to run at” What did those two have combined? Over 300 yards? Dang Grantham, nice adjustment. 32, no wait,33 years.

@ 7:39 thenumber 34 – envy UGA’s program? DUDE – are you serious? Bama will win more National Titles in the last four years alone than UGA has won in over 120 years of playing football – with number 3 this year.

This years was your closest opportunity since 1982 – the only time since then UGA had a direct path on their own merits. No doubt, UGA jelled into a very very good team this year – but your defense is totally rebuilding next year ……….. and UGA fans are back to “things are lining up” for your future one time shot.

Hey – just beat somebody – instead of talking about it – OK?

Serioulsy, UGA is a good program pretty much year in and year out – but rarely is UGA up in the elite status range.

Hey – with UGA football peaking this year – it looks like it will be another 30 years for a shot at a National title……………. at least college Hoops will keep UGA fans going ….. oops my bad – UGA basketballl, yet another joke.

How many SEC games will Fox and UGA win this year? In year 4? But hey, Fox is one of the best player developers in the nation – or so we are told by the UGA faithful.

Any bets on UGA SEC wins this year – I will say the over under is 3. My pick is under.

What are y’all so damn fired up about? You had Matt Stafford AND Knoshon Mareno and trailed us 31 to 0 AT THE HALF. You had A.J.Green and LOST TO COLORADO. You had 11 NFLers on your defense and gave up over 300 yards rushing to Yeldon and Lacy. You can have all the skill players in the world, but until Richt recruits AND PLAYS athletes on your offensive line who will create a physical, pound the rock, downhill, control the clock, running game, you ain’t going nowhere. Richt is kind of bizarre. How many times does he have to lose (From Central Florida to Mich. State to Us), before he acknowledges it.

Montravius Adams, Reuben Foster, and Laremy Tunsil are going to really top off this Class.

Alabama Trolls are on here because they know the Officials saved them and because they know the SEC has finally put the clamps on Saban’s constant Oversigning.

Georgia’s about to get their numbers back up, with a very strong Class.

Alabama’s big advantage is evaporating right before their eyes. Go Dawgs!!!

This is the fourth year in a row that dwagturds have gotten all pumped up over their “Dream Team” that was going to start a championship dynasty in Athens. And every year their hopes and dreams have come crashing down into a turbulent sea of mediocrity and irrelevance.

Will the dummies never learn that it’s not going to happen while Mark Richt is in Athens.

And the thing is, the very athletes Richt needs to establish this type of offensive line are right here in-state, right under his nose. And he “passes” on them. And what makes things even worse is that, by doing so, he mindlessly equips your competitors with these studs. James Carpenter and Chance Warmack ( both NFL 1st round picks, made up the left side of our offensive line that dominated Texas) Warmack, like his predecessor at South Carolina, Rokevious Watkins, pushed your defense all over the field. Doesn’t Richt see this? Was he at these games? I’m telling you,the guy is strange. Like he’s in denial or somrthing. For example,in spite of James Carpenter’s dominance, he allows us to land Cedar Grove’s Brandon Greene, who is the NEXT JAMES CARPENTER! What the hell is wrong with Richt? And this year he’s at his absolute worst. MAX GARCIA, OCTAVIOUS JACKSON, and TRENT BROWN to the GATORS!? Are you friggin kidding me? Look for more of the same treatment you received from Watkins and Warmack. It’s just weird. Like a moth to a flame. HE keeps doing the same thing, over and over. 33 years.
