UGA kicks off biggest recruiting weekend of year

UGA’s biggest recruiting weekend of the year kicks off on Friday.

At least 17 prospects are scheduled to take official visits with the Bulldogs this weekend. Nearly all of the visitors have already pledged to UGA, but there is a top uncommitted prospect in town – defensive tackle Toby Johnson of Hutchinson junior college.

UGA has a big weekend (AJC)

The 6-foot-5, 310-pound Johnson is one of Georgia’s top remaining priorities. He is a former standout at Banneker High School and ranked as the nation’s No. 2 prospect out of junior college by 247sports. Johnson has only taken recruiting trips to Oklahoma and Georgia, but has another visit scheduled for Missouri next month.

“I don’t know exactly when I’m going to commit,” Johnson said. “But whenever it feels right, I’m going to go ahead and do it.”

Earlier this week, Johnson underwent knee surgery for a torn ACL and MCL. He hopes to play next season, but has a redshirt season available just in case he isn’t ready. Georgia coach Mark Richt called Johnson after the surgery.

“Coach Richt hit me up and said don’t worry about anything, that they still want me at Georgia,” Johnson said. “That meant a lot.”

Georgia has 30 commitments for 2013, and could sign as many as 36.

Here’s some of UGA commitments who have confirmed they will be visiting this weekend (* denotes early enrollee):

  • *Tray Matthews, 6-2, 215, Newnan HS
  • *Quincy Mauger, 6-0, 197, Kell HS
  • CB Shaq Wiggins, 5-9, 160, Sandy Creek HS
  • CB *Reggie Wilkerson, 6-0, Citra, Fla.
  • DT DeAndre “Moose” Johnson, 6-3, 311, Northgate HS
  • DE *Naim Mustafaa, 6-4, 235, Alpharetta HS
  • LB Johnny O’Neal, 6-1, 230, West Laurens HS
  • LB Shaun McGee, 6-2, 230, Brookwood HS
  • OL Brandon Kublanow, 6-3, 290, Walton HS
  • OL *Aulden Bynum, 6-5, 250, Valwood HS
  • OG *Josh Cardiello, 6-4, 280, Buford HS
  • WR Rico Johnson, 5-11, 171, Swainsboro HS
  • RB AJ Turman, 5-11, 200, Orlando, Fla.
  • TE Jordan Davis, 6-4, 220, Thomson HS
  • QB *Brice Ramsey, 6-2, 180, Camden County HS

Feel better after the Auburn hire and the Tenn hire TBA today at 3 ( Jones from Cinnci). little star power for either hire, thus I feel most commits will stay with Dawgs. If C. Strong had landed in Knoxville and K. Smart in Auburn, we would of lost several commits. Not because they don’t love Georgia, just that they are 17 and can be swayed pretty easy with a little love and Attention. Go Dawgs.

I’m thinking Tenn made a change…..just to make a change……They will be back at the well in 3 years……and the next hire will be even tougher. Maybe they will have a guy signed on before the next time……Jones will go 6-6, 7-5,7-5 in Knoxville with losses to THE football schools in the conference.

A few universal truths for Dawg Nation to chew on:

The team with intelligence, class, and heart won, which is as it should be.

Kool-Aid doesn’t win the big games, no matter how much of it you swill.

Drunks, potheads, and woman-beaters are not winners in anything.

And, just a reminder that real coaches like Saban win the big games, while overpaid pretenders like Richt do not.

Hey Oversigning. You’re an idiot! We are about 15-18 scholarships short from last year and next year bama ain’t gonna have the same line you have now. I think we play y’all next year. I hope we do. All our line is coming back and you inbreds will know what it means to get trampled!!!

Of 17 recruits, 10 will spurn the dogs, 2 will not be academically eligible, 5 will sign, of those, 3 will be arrested/suspended for smoking dope and/or eating brownies, leaving 2 who be over-rated and flagged for a personal foul at the wrong time in the one big game on your schedule.

Are you really this stupid? Georgia was 15 players short of a full scholarship load of 85 this year and we still came down to one play of going to the NC. Imagine what we’ll do with a full 85 scholarships.

NCDawg

Oversigning – you are an idiot. It isn’t oversigning if you have the scholarships available. It’s oversigning and greyshirting when you ask the kid to sign knowing that you may not have room for him. The Dawgs can sign up 36 because they have early enrollees and they have extra scholarships available because they only signed 19 guys last year.
Next time know what you are talking about before you make a fool of yourself.

The difference is is signing a kid knowing you won’t have enough room. There is where the issue originates. It is just wrong to sign kids KNOWING you don’t have enough scholarships to go around. BIG difference you morons. Would you like to be hired as part of a group by an employer that KNOWS he doesn’t have enough jobs to go around? Wouldn’t you feel cheated? You bet your life you would.

Don’t understand why the new Tenn coach, who hasn’t proven anything or won one game in the SEC comes in a 3 mil, while Richt is at 3 mil. Yes, We all know the shortcomings…..but the positives far outweigh them. Richt ought to be at about 4 mil per….and Bobo at 500K. Based on market, not your opinion of them or UGA.

I guess we need another article on what oversigning really is. Flat Tire- quit acting like you know anything. You CANNOT bring in more than your team’s scholarship allotment allows. In norma years, a team can bring sign 25 scholarship players. If that team loses players early for any reason ( draft, transfer, expulsion) then they can use those “extra” scholarships in the next class provided that the kids enroll early. Notice the asterics above next to players names. Due to attrition and (IMHO)some poor roster management, UGA has 35+ available scholarships. When a team has 25 spots available and offers 26 scholarships, then they cannot bring in that extra kid to compete. They leave him out to dry or try and place him in a prep school for next years’ class ( without any guarantees).
