Auburn’s recruits from Georgia react to hiring of Guz Malzahn

Auburn’s football recruits from Georgia got the news about Tuesday’s hiring of Gus Malzahn. Most of them want to know more about or meet Malzahn, or see whom he is going to hire as defensive assistants before saying much more:

  • Carl Lawson, DE from Milton High School (ranked nation’s No. 2 overall prospect by ESPN): “Don’t have much information on him.”
  • AJ Jackson, TE from Lovejoy High School: “My coach told me, but I don’t really know who that guy is. I’ve never heard of him before, but I’m sure he’s good if Auburn hired him. They said he was the OC at Auburn a couple of years ago. It’s a good thing he’s been a coach at Auburn before.” The 6-foot-6 Jackson has scheduled an official visit to Mississippi State on Jan. 25, and will also take trips to Florida State and Ole Miss.
  • Jimmy Hutchinson, punter from Harrison High School: “I’m super excited about it. I know Auburn is heading in the right direction. I feel like (Malzahn) was a great all-around choice. I couldn’t be happier.”
  • Jarrad Davis, LB from Camden County High School: “It’s a very interesting hire. I’m still not sure if I want to go to school there, though. I’ve kind of opened things back up lately, and I’ve been talking to a lot of schools. I mean, I’m not really sure where I want to go to school right now. I’m not like 100-percent solid on where I want to go. I used to know. But I’m not sure anymore.” Davis, who has a 3.6 GPA, will take official visits to Ole Miss and Duke over the next two weekends. He also likes Florida, which has yet to offer but stopped by his school on Tuesday to set up an official visit for Jan. 18. Davis will go to Iowa State the week after that. “I’ve got strong interest in Florida. I’ve been talking to them, and I let them know that I’m really interested in their school. That’s pretty much it. I’ve always been high on Florida.” Davis said he was going to “most likely” save his final official visit for Auburn in late January.

Also, it remains to be seen how much of an impact Malzahn’s hiring will have on LB Trey Johnson, who de-committed from Auburn last week. “I think it could be a good fit for Auburn, as far as someone that they are familiar with,” said Johnson’s coach at Central Gwinnett High School, Todd Wofford. “But as far as Trey goes, it didn’t fire him up as much as the Kirby talk” – Auburn’s consideration of Alabama defensive coordinator Kirby Smart. Ohio State and Florida are rumored to be the leaders for Johnson.

Auburn is falling apart at the seams, and this hire will do nothing to stop it. About as uninspiring a coaching hire as you could ask for. The rest of the SEC West is laughing over this.

Bobby Petrino ain’t coming to help you, War TIgers!

Cam Newton ain’t coming back, either, no matter how much you pay him this time.

Just go ahead and suspend your “football” program.

I am glad AU decided to stay with a CGC guy,the program will in all probability stay the same except for the head man. That one change should not be enough to turn them around. They needed to clean house and they chose not to do it.
They will be doing the HC search again in 2 or 3 years.

What’s that sound? That’s the sound of UGA losing in another SEC Championship to another ranked team.

UGA = 34 years and counting.

Another Mafia hire. Nothing changes. They should of brought in a bigger than life figure to clean that rat nest out. Someone who when Dye calls he won’t drop what he’s doing and go running over there. Someone who would of fired every coach and 90% of the Football support staff and started fresh. Is Gus that person. Don’t think so. Great guy. Decent offensive mind. big enough shoulders to clean the place up. We’ll see.

Hey “MIke” solid slashing job of Lawson’s comments. He also said, “But the most important thing is best overall fit, and I think that’s still Auburn.” See how easy that was! Also you have nothing on Reuben Foster “My thoughts are good, I thought it was a good hire.” You also did not mention Auburn’s 3rd 5 star defensive player, Dee Liner, who said, “I hope he keeps the coaches, Coach ‘Troop’, Coach (Mike) Pelton, I have a great connection with them. But if they don’t keep those guys, I’m still going to come play for him.” Not to mention AU’s top 100 QB who said, “I’m excited, I feel like this seals the deal.” Oh yeah and that other top 100 WR committed to AU, Earnest Robinson “I feel good about it. I feel good about Auburn and my commitment now that we know who the coach is.”

Fair enough. I figured with the large Auburn contingent that reads this paper you may want to include their top targets when discussing how Auburn recruits liked the hire.

Gus will certainly bring the offense back to life. I agree that Trooper Taylor should go, and I would add Van Gorder to that list. Pat Dye has been a cancer on the athletic department for years since he formed the payroll department during his coaching tenure. Now that Dye’s godfather, Bobby Lowder, has been defanged, Gus should change the locks to the athletic department. Tubberville’s problems began when he refused Dye entrance to the locker room after games. I think that Malzahn may suprise some people.

I know it sucks that UGA can’t win big games, but go sell self-pity somewhere else. You’re jealous/angry that Auburn won a national championship and they were cleared by the NCAA. You are a typical UGA fan who hates it when other schools win championships. I’ve never seen a more jealous group of fans than UGA fans. Even Bama fans have gotten over 2010.

“What really sucks is being 3-8. Oh wait, that’s you! So, it must suck to be you!”

Yep, this year sucked for Auburn but Auburn will be back soon. In fact, Auburn has gone undefeated in every decade since the 80s. Auburn will get top recruits and compete once GM has his people in place.

Trey Johnson is a strong lead to Florida, joining a very impressive of LB commits so far (although Meyer might get Hearns if Johnson commit to Florida). Seems that Davis will be a Gator if Muschamp offers him. I would expect that if Hearns decommits to Ohio State.

And…that tight end wondering about who the new Auburn coach….the guy who coached Cam Newton and the NC team’s offense….I am sure you have heard his name before, tight end recruit….but I understand that memories in young people today are not last much more than 10 minutes…much less two long, long years……but…let me tell you this….the new Auburn coach will not use you much in his offense….as it is called the spread….and a TE is not a featured player in the spread most of the time. You might want to consider Georgia, Bama, Florida, Arkansas (with the new coach), SC….as they do feature the TE in a pro style offense….just saying.

Kirby Smart was the choice but they couldn’t come to terms on details. Offered 6 yrs @ $20 mil, but he wanted full disclosure on everything going on with the NCAA, complete control of all hiring and firing of staff and football related positions, and to remain at Bama thru the national championship game. AU said no. It was close enough that Saban had already started checking other coaches interest in Kirby’s job. Arkansas potentially hit a home run if he can recruit in the south, but for AU it is more of the same old same old!
