Georgia State signs three for volleyball

The Georgia State volleyball team signed three newcomers during the 2012 fall signing period. Buford, Ga. native Kristina Stinson will join Ohio products Molly Shonk and Cassie Hughes as they begin play in 2013.

“This class fits perfectly with our team dynamic,” said GSU coach Tami Audia.” All three of them are athletic, passionate about volleyball and know how to play the game. At one time or another, they have played positions other than the one we recruited them for, which tells us that they know the game and can adjust when needed. Going in to the Sun Belt Conference with these four freshmen and our returning team is definitely making 2013 bright.”

  • Stinson, a 6-foot middle blocker and outside hitter, earned four varsity letters at North Gwinnett High School. She was named the 2012 Gwinnett County Player of the Year and earned a place on the 2012 Georgia Senior All-Star team. She earned a GVCA All-State nod in 2011 and 2012, two All-Area Region 7 selections, a pair of All-County nods and two selections to the Gwinnett Daily Post Super 10. In her four seasons at North Gwinnett she posted 1,104 career kills to go along with 367 career aces and helped lead her team to a 163-37 record over the past four seasons. She also helped lead her team to the state Sweet 16’s in 2009 and 2011, and a state Elite Eight finish in 2010. “Kristina (Stinson) is a strong, fast athlete that can, really, play any front row position needed,” said Audia. “She has a keen blocking sense and works hard to be available for the setter. She will bring personality and spunk to our team. I am excited to see where Kristina’s game is at the end of this season after she plays her second year of 18’s at the open level.”
  • Shonk played three positions and earned three varsity letters from Bishop Hartley High School in Columbus, Ohio. She helped lead BHHS to a state title in 2011 and earned a Columbus Dispatch Player of the Week. In 2012 she was named First Team All-Ohio and First Team Central District. In the 2011 state semifinals she posted 17 kills and 18 digs. Her club team, Mintonette Sports, placed third in the Junior Olympic Nationals in 2012. “Molly (Shonk) has a very high volleyball IQ,” said Audia. “When you watch her, it seems she has been playing the game well past her years. She is a gritty outside hitter that is very athletic and will compete from beginning to end. She just knows how to play the game and has the ability to help us at a few different positions.”
  • Hughes is the second signee from Ohio added during the fall signing period. A 6-foot outside hitter and middle blocker, she earned four letters at Bloom-Carroll High School in Carroll, Ohio. In her senior season she was named First Team Mid State League, First Team All-District, All-Ohio, as well as league and district Player of the Year. She helped lead her team to the state Final Four and holds the Bloom-Carroll record for kills with 1,365. In her final season of high school competition she earned 383 kills, 228 digs, 69 aces, 84 block assists and 70 solo blocks. She was also named to the district and state All-Star teams in 2012. “Cassie (Hughes) is a very accomplished outside hitter,” said Audia. “She is a winner and has done so at both the high school and club level. Her length and wingspan give her the ability to attack at a high point and cover a lot of ground passing. She knows how to put the ball away and doesn’t make a lot of errors–the key to a great outside hitter.”
