Auburn loses another high-prized football recruit

Auburn has lost another high-prized commitment from Georgia.

Trey Johnson, a 4-star linebacker from Central Gwinnett High School, de-committed from Auburn on Tuesday, according to his coach.

“In talking with Trey and his dad, they feel like it’s time to de-commit because they don’t even know who Trey is committed to at Auburn (without a new coach hired),” Central Gwinnet coach Todd Wofford told the AJC.

“Trey wanted to be fair to himself, and to be fair to the schools that are recruiting him. It is two months away from signing day, and he’s not in a position where he can wait to see what coach Auburn may hire, what defense they may run, and things like that.

Johnson’s de-commitment doesn’t come as much of a surprise. Ever since Gene Chizik was frequently mentioned as being on the hotseat, Johnson had openly communicated with other colleges.

The 6-foot-2, 225-pounder went on an official visit this past weekend to Ohio State, which is rumored to be the new frontrunner. Urban Meyer visited Johnson at school two weeks ago.

When asked if Ohio State was Johnson’s leader, his coach said, “That was his first official visit, and Trey had a great time up there.”

The other top contenders are Florida, USC and Penn State. Johnson will take an official visit to Florida on Dec. 15 and to USC on Jan. 18. He is still working out a date with Penn State, and he may save his final visit for Auburn.

Auburn has had shaky relationship with Johnson since he committed to the Tigers two summers ago. A major factor in Johnson selecting Auburn was defensive coordinator Ted Roof, who was not retained after the 2011 season. Then Johnson built another connection with first-year defensive coordinator Brian VanGorder, who was part of Chizik’s staff.

“Ted Roof, being a Central Gwinnett graduate, that was a big draw for Trey to Auburn at the time,” Wofford said. “He took a hit from that. Then there’s this deal. So it’s kind of happened twice. Trey has seen the business side of college football probably more than any other recruit. He got close to two different defensive coordinators that were let go. He tried to make it work but now it’s time for Trey to look out what is best for him and his family.”

On Sunday night, longtime Auburn commit Ja’Quay Williams backed off the Tigers. Williams, who is enrolled at prep school and played wide receiver at Sandy Creek High School last year, has taken official visits to UGA and Texas A&M the past two weekends.

There are also rumblings that three other Auburn commitments from Georgia — Milton High School DE Carl Lawson, Lovejoy High School TE AJ Jackson and former Troup High School LB Reuben Foster — may also be re-opening their recruitment.

This fallout couldn’t be happening to a more deserving program. Petrino would be oh so appropriate for them. Praying that it happens….

It’s not just Auburn having two bad years in a row and firing Chizik – it is the NCAA investigation that will uncover major infractions and forthcoming sanctions.

At first I thought this was satire but then I realized, he was being serious. Yikes.

Tough situation on the plains.

Interesting situation for UGA in terms of recruiting late in the season. It is hard to figure exactly how many scholarships UGA can give this year. We know we have full 25, plus whatever number of early enrollees count against last year. We signed 19 last year and would think at least 2-3 of those counted against the previous years toal, so I’m GUESSING we have around 33 or 34 to give this year 25 plus 8 or 9 as long as those additional 8-9 are eary enrollees.

Not only are there 4-5 Huge recruits that everyone wants that are strong UGA possibilities… now there are 2-3 highly sought after Auburn verbals that are from Georgia that UGA appears to be back in the mix for.

Auburn is a top rate SEC school? Was back in 2010 when they had the best team money could buy. Now? No way and probation coming. These recruits are smart to run away as fast as they can.

Jessica Dorrell can’t hold a candle (or smoke a sausage) compared to the FINE SOUTHERN LADIES we have here in East Alabama.

She would fit in better with those future Waffle House waitresses and future double-wide minivan drivers they have over in Tuscaloosa.

Welcome HOME, Coach Petrino.

Man, you auburn fans are loyal to a fault I will give you credit. You want Petrino and that circus of uncertainty that comes with him? Yep, hope you get him. That is just what you need as you go on probation is a coach you can’t trust to do the right thing. On behalf of UGA and Bama fans, you deserve Petrino and all that comes with him.

given the above, do Richt and staff put pressure on the three “soft” verbal committements UGA has for them to make a decision after the SECCG?

Is it within the rules to oversign by 1 or 2 assuming that it is VERY unlikely that 33-34 recruits make it into school and report in the Fall. Even in a 20-25 person class there are usually two that don’t make it in for whatever reason.

Does anyone know when the 25 and 85 rule is counted? If it is at the start of next fall, would think we can sign closer to 35 expecting some attrition from a class this size.

If we get another top notch WR, does Richt advise one of the kids already verbally committed at WR that he is going to have a tough time seeing the field and he may want to look elsewhere?

Do we get verbals from 35-36 players assuming that a couple are going to actually SIGN somewhere else in February?

This is a unique situation that UGA finds themselves in.

Nick Saban couldn’t get a hot 20-year-old blond girl into his bed even if he was pulling there behind his Ford F-150.

Saban is now a 60-something-year-old codger who is about ready to start collecting social security, and young recruits are going to wise up and see that playing for a younger, winning coach like Coach Petrino is their real ticket to championships and maybe the NFL.

Coach Petrino is a youthful coach who will steal young recruits away from the withering Saban and appeal to more babes to come to Auburn, too.

If the recruits were really concerned about higher education they would be committing to the university first, not the coach.

The Maximum # of players currently on athletic scholarship can not exceed 85 at any time. There is no official time this count is taken as it is maximum at all times.

11 of UGA’s recruits Early Enrolls will count against the 2012 recruiting class since that class was short with only 19 recruits and 2 did not qualify (Atkins 7 Floyd) also 3 2012 recruits (Marshall, Bauta, Beard) were EE and counted against the 2011 recruiting class.

Look for UGA to sign a full 2013 recruiting class of 36 players.

Tony the Tiger… should be the other way around! Auburn does not deserve to have Petrino. Auburn is too good of a school to be saddled w/ that low life. And if it does happen, you can forget about him having any luck recruiting Georgia. Folks have a long memory around here. Believe me, you can do much better!!!!!!!!!!!!

TG…….come on now, you are better than that! Players commit to the football coaching staff first, then they may consider the academics down their list of priorities. Very few think about the classroom first, even our Dawgs program, will tell you that is the way it is!

I don’t know why a school that is teetering on the razor’s edge of the death penalty would want to hire a slimey slug like Bobby Petrino. That would only serve to focus the beam on Awbun.

I’d say that Penn State would be high on Johnson’s list.
Linebacker U not only has DC Ted Roof on the staff, but also LB coach Ron Vanderlinden and DL coach Larry Johnson… arguably two of the best in the nation.

I love it...

As much as I dislike Urban Meyer, I’d love it if Trey played for him so that Georgia wouldn’t have to go against him and Florida won’t get him. Florida definitely will need to load up at linebacker soon with Bostic graduating and Jenkins possibly going pro.

Me personally if I had the chance to go to Notre Dame I wouldn’t even consider them because the average snow fall in South Bend is 5 feet and the temperature runs between 16 and 22 as a low.Maybe most of that doesn’t start until after the football season but as a student you would still have to live in it.
The same thing at Ohio State . To cold and too much snow. I hope these South Georgia and Atlanta area young men will think about that because for me it would be a deal breaker. How could anyone consider the Big Ten school over an SEC school.

Thanks Dawg Gawn

I didn’t realize that we could have 11 count against last year (assuming 11 early enroll). That does free up a couple more ’ships than I thought we had to give this year.

7576DAWG I agree. The snow and cold up there can be awful. It may look good for a little while, but unlike in Georgia, it doesn’t warm up and go away. If you like cold weather, Ohio is the place, but there is a reason they want all their recruiting visits over before January. And 7576DAWG you were wrong about one thing. The lows hit in the negatives on a regular basis. Try -16 to -20!

What a great week for both Bama and UGA and our recruits/programs….

* The ACC got beat down over the weekend…
** Auburn, Arky, TN and Ky all are looking for coaches (Ky just hired Stoops)
*** Fl State gets no respect and Jimbo may jump. Clemson lost to SC and has nothing going on.
*** Falcons/Saints as the “warmup” game in the Ga Dome.

Can Foster back out of his commitment from Auburn with his mom having a 4 year lease on a house there and a nice job, that suddenly became reality after her son committed to Auburn? The young man may have just made his bed and now has to sleep in it. He is a talent for sure, but I doubt he is loyal to anybody that doesn’t go his way, so I am not sure, even with all his talent, that he is a viable recruit for UGA.
