UGA’s chances with 5-star DT could improve after Derek Dooley’s firing

No. 1 JC prospect Toby Johnson might visit UGA this weekend (247sports)

Tennessee’s firing of Derek Dooley could help UGA’s chances of landing the nation’s No. 1-ranked prospect out of junior college.

Tennessee and UGA have been considered the frontrunners for Toby Johnson, a 5-star defensive tackle from Hutchinson junior college in Kansas. Johnson hasn’t officially named any leaders.

The 6-foot-5, 310-pounder from Atlanta’s Banneker High School was unsure how Dooley’s termination would affect his long-term relations with Rocky Top.

“I don’t really know what’s going on at Tennessee, but if they keep everybody else at Tennessee on the coaching staff …” Johnson told the AJC on Sunday night.

“I know about the Derek Dooley situation. That really doesn’t have anything to do with my decision or anything, unless Coach Staley doesn’t stay there. It just depends on who all stays and things like that.

“But I haven’t counted Tennessee out.”

Coach Staley is Brandon Staley, Johnson’s former coach at Hutchinson — who was hired at Tennessee as a graduate assistant last year as part of a rumored package deal that also involved three other Hutchinson prospects – 5-star WR Cordarrelle Patterson (who was roommates with Johnson last year and signed with Tennessee over UGA; Patterson was last year’s No. 1-ranked JC player in the nation) and DT Ben Bradley (who is roommates with Johnson this year at the JC and has committed to Tennessee). Tennessee officially denied the package deal accusation last year, and Johnson told the AJC a few months ago he will make an independent decision.

What did Johnson think about Dooley’s firing? “I was kind of surprised,” he said. “Before Coach Staley recruited me for Tennessee, (Tennessee wide receivers coach Darin Hinshaw) recruited me. As long as there’s still coaches at Tennessee that I know … and my roommate (Bradley) stays committed and stuff like that, then I’m keeping Tennessee in there.

“I will let everybody know if I decide to take Tennessee off my list. As of right now, I’m not.”

Johnson took an unofficial visit to Nebraska this past weekend, and has only taken one official visit – to Oklahoma. He will take a recruiting trip to UGA in December, and may even show up for an unofficial this weekend with the Bulldogs for the Georgia Tech game.

“If I end up coming home (to Atlanta) for Thanksgiving, I will go over to Georgia,” Johnson said.

What about his three other official visits? Johnson will likely go to Tennessee, depending on how the coaching situation is resolved. He was supposed to go to Mississippi State on Dec. 1, and may still visit the SEC school but on another date. And it looks like he won’t be touring Ole Miss.

“I don’t know about Ole Miss, it’s just not a school that … I prefer not talking about it,” Johnson said. “(Recruiting coordinator Chris Kiffin) and I, we haven’t been talking on a regular basis like we were. I don’t know.”

Johnson suffered a season-ending knee injury earlier this month, and said he was scheduled to under surgery on Dec. 13. Johnson hopes to play next season but has a redshirt season available in case he needs to sit out and rehabilitate. He will transfer to a four-year college in January, with three seasons to play two in football. Johnson is ranked as the nation’s No. 1 overall JC prospect by 247sports but could drop in the next rankings due to his injury.

What does it take for the AJC to give ANTHONY JENNINGS his due? Very few people realize how good this kid is. Few people know that he played his entire Jr. year with a torn cartilege in his knee. Even fewer know about his rehab, and that while not yet 100%, JENNINGS won the Elite 11 regionals over 90 other quarterbacks, including UGA commit, Brice Ramsey. You have to go to the Marietta Daily NEWS to realize he froze UGA commit Tray Mathews on a 40 yard TD run, and to read what Newnan’s Head Caoch said after the game: “IF THERE’S A BETTER QUARTERBACK IN THE STATE, WE DON’T WANT TO FACE HIM.” You have to go to the Valdosta Daily News to read the details of his 4th quarter 88 yard touchdown run vs. Lowndes County: “JENNINGS RAN THROUGH THE ENTIRE LOWNDES DEFENSIVE FRONT, REGAINED HIS BALANCE, AND OUT RAN THE DEFENSIVE BACKFIELD TO SCORE THE DECISIVE TOUCHDOWN. or to read what Lowndes Head Coach McPherson about JENNINGS after the game. ” HE WAS THE DIFFERENCE IN THE GAME. HE’S A DIFFERENCE MAKER. HE’S EVERYTHING AND MORE THEY SAID HE WAS.” This kid is the best dual threat Quarterback in America, and no one wants it out there knows it. (EXCEPT LSU AND LES MILES) Sounds like a UGA conspiracy. Who’s your editor, MIKE BOOBOO?

There’s a decent chance that Jennings doesn’t fit into UGA’s pro-style offense, that he is better with a team that runs the spread and the zone-read option. Just a guess on my part, however.

Ask Lowndes who Anthony Jennings is. He’s the QB who threw a 70 yard bomb on them, called back on a penalty and followed it right back up with a 93 yard TD bomb. He also threw two more beautiful long TD passes and then BAM! broke their hearts with a dazzling 88 yard TD run, yes, through the entire defense out running every DB on the Lowndes team. Marietta would NEVER have beaten Lowndes without Jennings. I’m sorry he won’t be going to Georgia too, but I bet he’ll be the starting QB at LSU as a redshirt freshman. Tide Roll has some strange fixation with Jennings, but if you saw him against Lowndes, maybe you will know why. jennings throws downfield on a rope, not the spread dink passes that a lot of the high school spread QB’s build their stats on.

@TideRoll:

So does AJC and CMB control national recruiting services? Is that why they don’t have him highly ranked? Get over it big guy, not everything is a conspiracy. You are paranoid man.

Is 310 big enough to play ng in the 3-4? Will he project to play de or ng?

One last thing about Georgia and Anthony Jennings. Anyone remember D J Shockley, with sprinter spead and a gun for an arm? He helped GA win the SEC Championship I believe. Well, there you have it: Anthony Jennings.

Apparently Staley might be the bag man for UT because Patterson got paid handsomely. Otherwise, he would have ended up at UGA, as all the experts expected him to. Tough to cut ties with the bag man, which Auburn will be facing with Trooper Taylor as well.

Toby Johnson was scheduled to visit UGA on Dec 8th followed up with his surgery on Dec 13th or 15th.

Word is out that Riyahd Jones did not receive an offer at the Ga Southern game… which could only mean that Brendan Langley will flip from USCe and or things have heated up with 5* CB Mackensie Alexander 5′ 11″ 175 lbs Immokalee FL. Alexander initially phoned UGA with the question ” I understand you have a CB spot open?” UGA had planned on taking two CB in this class… could be Langley & Jones or Langley & Alexander. Alexander needs to set up a visit ASAP!

Gamecocks have suddenly retaliated with a scholarship offer to Shaq Wiggins!

This is turning out to be a Mega recruiting class for 2013 with Laremy Tunsil (recently seen wearing UGA gear) Montravius Adams, Alvin Kamara, Tyrone Crowder, Toby Johnson, Brendan Langley, Jonathon Rumph (set to announce Wednesday) Ja’Quay Williams, with possibly either Riyahd Jones or Mackensie Alexander topped off with Reuben Foster!

Tray Matthews will be bringing his boi, Reuben Foster along with him to the Georgia Tech game… this is huge, Foster not attending the Iron Bowl… but in Athens! WOW!

What’s Dooley’s firing got to do with Richt and Booboo repeatedly overlooking in-state prospects, particularly Quaterbacks and Offensive Linemen? Dooley’s firing doesn’t change that. Sign ANTHONY JENNINGS at Quarterback. Sign Shamire Devine at Right Tackle. Sign Octavious Jackson at Right Guard, Sign Joshua Outlaw at Left Guard, Sign Devonte Seymour at Left Tackle, and as soon as John-John Atkins enrolls, move him to center to replace Boss, “The Dominator” Andrews. Before someone gets maimed!

The recruiting tables have a chance to clearly turn in the Dawgs’ favor with the firing of Dooley, the firing of a few other SEC coaches and a win over Alabama. The TN-KY game will be an interesting battle of the interim coaches. Is it also possible to get Nkimdiche? There are a few chinks in Saban’s armor with the loss to TAMA. A Bama loss to Georgia should make a lot of recruits reconsider.

It’s about the SEC East for them. That’s why they’re hyped about a kid who runs a triple option and throws on occasion. Good luck to Ramsey and the Dawgs. Jennings has a job waiting for him in Red Stick where he’ll be playing for National Championships.

Joining the discussion a little late but just wanted to say I think it’s a little over the top to talk about how we will benefit from Dooley’s firing only hours after we find out about it. I mean, if it’s Kiffin or even a coach with no UGA roots that’s different. But I just don’t like this discussion topic, especially so soon after he was fired.

Guy going by name of Tide Roll has only one valid point..top notch in-state linemen should be recruiting priority number one……The QBs and other skill players he refers to are doing all the things he says on the high school fields, where they get to run around in a whole lot more space than they will at the next level..Tide Roll – just stick to your linemen theme; that’s the only point you make worth anything. At one time, LSU’s Russell Sheppard was one of the top (if not THE top) dual threat HS QBs in the Nation; LSU made him a part time player out of the backfield and sometime receiver; he couldn’t beat out Jordan Jefferson (who I think was not rated that highly).

Auburns coach is gone, and Tennessee’s coach is gone so as soon as the firings take place those coaches are gone too.
Alabama, LSU, Miss St., Texas A&M, Georgia, Florida and S Carolina is the only safe places to go to.
Georgia has the best opportunities to start after this year because of early entry to the draft and lots of seniors leaving as well.
Alabama, LSU and S Carolina are notorious for over signing recruits and LSU and Bama redshirt alot of freshmen in their 1st year or ask them to wait to play next year.
Mark Richt by far has better character than those 3 coaches and if he says youll play ,then youll play, and thats good enough for me.
Spurrier has what maybe 3 years left in coaching, if that then retires. Mark Richt has just signed a new contract and will be around awhile but the others you never know.
Its a no brainer these guys should give Georgia the edge in making their decision.

Oh, by the way, Jennings froze your commit, Tray Matthews on a 60 yard TD run, and afterwards Newnan’s coach was quoted as saying: “IF THERE’S A BETTER QUARTERBACK IN THE STATE, WE DON”T WANT TO FACE HIM.” This follows a similar sentiment about Jennings expressed by Lowndes Coach, Randy McPherson: “HE WAS THE DIFFERENCE. HE’S A DIFFERENCE MAKER. JENNING’S IS EVERYTHING THEY SAID HE WAS AND MORE.” But what do these guys know? You guys and Booboo are the experts. Jennings is a UGA legacy, and grew up a UGA fan, and Richt and Bobo commit to Ramsey BEFORE the season. Now they’ve got an excuse. There’s nothing Jennings can do on the field, y’all have already got your QB. In head to head competition at the Elite 11 regionals, Jennings won the thing, while Ramsey didn’t place in the finals. Clearly Booboo and UGA’s evaluation isn’t based on performance. We all know what it’s based on. Y’all simply don’t have the GUTS to own up to it. Same “OLD” GEORGIA. Pitiful

You must really be ticked off that Bama missed out on Anthony Jennings, right? You are blowing your cover- you play the role of a Tide fan on here, yet are more disappointed over UGA not getting Jennings than you are that Alabama missed out on Jennings, Dobbs, and McCrary.

As a UGA fan, and one who realizes there are scholarship limits, and you cannot take everyone you want to, I am pleased to welcome the state’s consensus #1 QB prospect, Brice Ramsey, to Athens.
