Kennesaw State signs four for softball

Kennesaw State’s softball team has signed four:  Lauren Bennett (Hoschton, Ga./Mill Creek HS) and Taylor Denton (Grayson, Ga./Grayson HS), catcher Madison Whitmire (Hoschton, Ga./Jackson County HS) and pitcher/athlete Logan Viers (Abingdon, Va./Abingdon HS).

“We’re very proud of this early signing class,” said Kennesaw State coach Scott Whitlock said in a press release. “We feel like we’ve gone out and really taken care of some needs that we had in the ball club. All four young women are fine softball players. They are very good students and they come from great families. They have all the characteristics, all the ear markings that you look for in a recruit and we’re really excited about them.”

The four signees will join the Owls starting in the fall of 2013.

  • Bennett, one of three members of the Atlanta Vipers travel team in this year’s signing class, was a star athlete for her Mill Creek high school softball team, earning First-Team All-County accolades all four years at Mill Creek. The Hoschton, Ga., native was also a four-time Gwinnett County Scholar Athlete, as well as a First-Team 8-AAAAA All-Region in 2011. Coach Whitlock on Bennett: “Lauren Bennett is an outstanding athlete. She can play infield or outfield. She’s got great speed, handles the bat really well. She’s a member of the Atlanta Vipers travel ball organization, as well as Mill Creek, both programs have a great history of winning, and we are really excited about her.”
  • Denton received First-Team 8-AAAAA Region honors following her first three years at Grayson high school and was tabbed First-Team 8-AAAAAA Region following a successful senior season in 2012. She earned Gwinnett Dugout Club 8-AAAAA First-Team plaudits in 2009 and 2010, before being named the Gwinnett Dugout Club Defensive Player of the Year in 2011. Denton has tallied 8-AAAAA All-State accolades each of her first three seasons at Grayson, including being named honorable mention as a freshman, second-team as a sophomore and first-team as a junior. She hails from Grayson, Ga., and also competes with the Atlanta Vipers travel team. Assistant Wes Holly Jr. on Denton: “Taylor plays second base for Grayson and she is a part of Atlanta Vipers as well. She does extremely well and is an extremely fast young lady. We are looking for a lot of options at the plate with her and she is going to make an immediate impact in the infield.”
  • Whitmire earned 8-AA Region Player of the Year and First-Team All-State 8-AA accolades following an outstanding junior campaign for her Jackson County high school in 2011. While at Jackson County, Whitmire was a three-time First-Team All-Region 8-AA selection, as well as a three-time Offensive Player of the Year and was tabbed Second-Team All-State 8-AA following her sophomore season, highlighted by a two-game stretch which saw her register 17 RBIs during region playoffs. Along with fellow signees Bennett and Denton, plays for the Atlanta Vipers travel team and is also from Hoschton, Ga.. Coach Whitlock on Whitmire: “Madison is going to fit a specific need for us. We needed to go out and sign a catcher in this recruiting class and we felt like she is one of, if not the best, catcher available in our region in the 2013 recruiting class. She’s got great power, is a very fine receiver and is just a softball junkie. She’s just a hard-working kid that is going to fit our program nicely.”
  • Viers, a decorated pitcher/athlete from Abingdon, Va., has been an integral part of her Abingdon high school softball team’s success the past three years, leading Abingdon to three Southwest District championships, one Southwest District tournament championship, two Region Four championships and AA State semi-final and runner-up finishes. Individually, Viers was named the Southwest District and Region Four Pitcher of the Year following the 2011 and 2012 seasons, as well as the Bristol Herald Courier Player of the Year for 2012. In her final three seasons at Abingdon, Viers was a three-time All-State, All-Region and All-District honoree, along with being selected to the Bristol Herald Courier All-Area Team in 2010, 2011 and 2012. Assistant Wes Holly Jr. on Viers: “Logan is a hard-throwing right handed pitcher and she’s going to come in and do a nice job here. We’re looking for big things from her as well, when she joins the pitching staff. She’s a very aggressive young lady, has good grades and she’s going to fit in here nicely.”
