The next great Georgia Tech guard? (247sports)

Georgia Tech signed two basketball players on Wednesday, the first day of the NCAA’s early period:  6-foot-1 guard Solomon Poole of Jacksonville, Fla., and 6-8 forward Quinton Stephens of Marist high school.

“I’m very excited about the addition of these two highly-regarded prospects,” Georgia Tech coach Brian Gregory said in a press release. “Both Solomon and Quinton will be great additions to the Georgia Tech program because they bring the qualities that we are looking for as we continue to build. They both come from great basketball families. Their fathers played at the collegiate and professional levels, and they were taught the importance of academics from an early age.” Here’s more info on both:

  • Solomon Poole: An all-state guard last season at Terry Parker High School in Jacksonville, where he averaged 21 points a game, will join his older brother, sophomore Stacey, Jr., on the Yellow Jackets’ team next year. He is rated a five-star prospect by Rivals and as high as 14th among all prep players. Rated as high as No. 7 among point guard prospects, Poole is attending the North Florida Educational Institute for his senior year. He played on the AAU circuit for the Atlanta Celtics, and his father, Stacey, played college ball at Florida. “Solomon has the explosiveness and athletic ability that fits in extremely well with our style of play,” Gregory said. “I really like his ability to create scoring opportunities for others and for himself in both the open-court and half-court situations. His tremendous work ethic and toughness will allow him to immediately compete on the ACC level.”
  • Quinton Stephens: An all-state selection from The Marist School in Atlanta, is a 3-star prospect in all three major recruiting rankings and ranked as high as No. 78 nationally, No. 18 among the nation’s small forwards. He averaged 18.9 points, six rebounds and three assists for the War Eagles last year. He becomes the first scholarship player for the Yellow Jackets from Marist since Matt Harpring, who played 11 years in the NBA and is the No. 2 all-time leading scorer at Tech. Stephens played AAU ball for the Atlanta Express. His father, Bob, played at Drexel collegiately and overseas for more than 10 years. “Quinton is one of the most versatile players nationally in the class of 2013,” said Gregory. “He has great length, is a tremendous shooter with range and has a basketball IQ beyond his years. From the day I got the job here, he has been a top priority for us because he fits in with our style of play and he’s a proven winner.”

You can’t win in college without a good point guard. No offense to Mfon, but Poole should be the best PG at GT since Jarrett Jack. This is a good signing.

In basketball. I think he’s safe for this season but before long Mark Fox is going to start hearing some grumbling if they don’t start winning.

New arena, two very good classes signed by Gregory… I think GT might be a top 20 team in the next two years. Very impressive, considering how Hewitt left the program.

A highly recruited PG is what this program has been lacking for a numbers of years now, good to see this signing of Poole. I agree, Gregory had done a great job with his recruiting classes in his time here at Tech after Hewitt ran the program into the ground his last couple of years.

Very good to add a guard and a forward. The team seems to need a couple of legitimate 7 footers. The bigs always seem to take time to develope.

Really solid players. Great class. Poole can go 1 or 2. Stephens will play the 3 spot and has arms that make him a 7 footer.

And the Heyward kid they signed earlier this year is out with injuries but is a solid PG also.

The roster for next season:
Guards: Heyward, So Poole, Bolden, Reed, St Poole.
Small forwards: Morris, Hunt, Stephens
Power Forwards: Holsey, Royal.
Centers: Miller, Carter

And a lot of this is interchangeable.

For next season GT is in the hunt for a 7″ center as well as a couple of 6/9 type centers.

next years class could be a great one. only 2 players leaving off this years team so there is not any room left, but next year there will be 4 spots open. Those 4 spots will be what pushes tech back to the top.

Hate to quibble, but I haven’t seen anything yet that has Poole rated a “5 star” prospect. I’ve been following his recruiting all along and have never seen him ranked as anything other than 4 stars. Having said that, I do believe he will become a major plus for the Jackets, assuming he lives up to the expectations, applies himself, etc., etc. The team is well-stocked with perimeter players (and remember, Stacy Poole will be playing soon and hopefully Corey Heyward will completely recover from his surgery and contribute next year).

And yes, it would be good if Gregory could sign another frontcourt player, maybe someone along the lines of a Zach Peacock or Jeremis Smith?

Rivals had Poole as a 5 star until sometime after he committed to Tech. I don’t know why they took away a star, but when he committed, he was a 5-star recruit. Regardless, it looks like Tech basketball is on its way up.

Hewitt recruited well his last two years(**Derrick Favors**) but the one and dones doomed him, and he lost the ability to develop his current talent, impliment, and execute. His assistant coaches getting raided is partially at fault and his loyalty to his coaches who were underachieving. But thats in the past and hoping the CBG can rebuild the bb program.
I didn’t see better execution last year but lets see how this year goes. I will give him credit though, so far he has proved me wrong in that he can recruit.

Of poole’s attitude issues. Gregory had a similar recruit at Dayton. Turned into a three ring circus. But hey it only cost us two scholarships for this head case.

GT66; crawl back under your rock. Solomon was heavily “vetted” and already “cleared” by the Hill. In fact, he’s scheduled to enroll this January because he’s graduating early. He’s a terrific kid and a great player who will be an asset to the team. Also, having his brother as a teammate will be a huge benefit in his transition from High School. As a well know TV personality is known for saying, all I have to say about you is, what a maroon…

Just a bit of variance. There are 6 other guards in the top 14….hahahaha.
