AJ Turman: UGA beats out Tennessee, Auburn, FSU and Miami for 4-star RB

UGA won’t have to sweat it out until February for a commitment at running back.

New UGA RB commit AJ Turman (247sports)

AJ Turman of Orlando committed to UGA on Tuesday evening, picking the Bulldogs over his other finalists of Tennessee, Auburn, Florida State and Miami. Turman is ranked as a 4-star prospect by ESPN, Rivals and 247sports, along with a 3-star recruit by Scout.

Turman is UGA’s first commitment at RB for its 2013 class after losing 5-star Derrick Henry to Alabama.

UGA has two of the SEC’s brightest young stars at running back in Todd Gurley and Keith Marshall, but desperately needs depth behind them. The Bulldogs have to sign at least one running back for 2013, and they hope to finish with two.

Here’s what some of the experts had to say about Turman:

  • 247sports.com’s Rusty Mansell: “Looking at tape on Turman, you have to like the one-cut ability he has. Most of all, I really like that he can run through tackles with a thick lower body. He looks to have great field vision plus the ability to stick it up in there and get the tough yards when needed. In the SEC it are those extra yards that mean the most, the ability to move the chains on third-and-3.”
  • Scout.com: “A power runner who attacks the line of scrimmage, Turman accelerates well out of one cut that attempts to punish would-be tacklers. He has good speed, but won’t be considered a burner, but his power lets him break tackles and get big chunks of yardage. Drives his legs well after contact and pushes a pile forward. Tends to run a bit high in traffic and will need to get lower. A workhorse who can handle 25+ carries.”
  • ESPN: “Turman is a college-ready back who might fall under the radar due to his lack of flash. He is a tough, productive, inside runner with durability and workhorse type qualities. He possesses a very good blend of size, strength and straight-line speed.”

UGA’s other primary target at running back is Norcross High School’s Alvin Kamara, one of the nation’s elite recruits. Kamara, who is ranked as the No. 3 overall all-purpose running back by Rivals, lists Alabama and UGA as his co-leaders. His decision will play out over the next few months, and maybe until February.

UGA won't have to sweat it out for a RB until February after landing AJ Turman (AP)

By taking such an aggressive approach and landing Turman, UGA has secured at least one prospect at a position of need, rather than placing all of its hopes on Kamara or another recruit who will likely wait to decide much closer to signing day – leaving open the possibility that they may go elsewhere, and forcing the Bulldogs to fall back on a secondary target too late in the recruiting process like last year.

Last year, UGA had a rough time on signing day with chasing star-studded prospects at other positions.  The Bulldogs sent scholarship papers to nine elite targets that were either undecided or heavily considering switching their commitments, and ended up signing two. UGA finished with only 19 signees – one of Mark Richt’s smallest classes, creating depth problems on the roster. The Bulldogs went through that recruiting cycle without signing a wide receiver or middle linebacker.

Two years ago, UGA boldly played a “high risk” strategy with Isaiah Crowell, making him the only running back the Bulldogs recruited until the end. There wasn’t a backup plan. On signing day, fortunately for UGA (at the time), Crowell held a puppy and said “I’m going to be Dawg” over signing papers with Alabama or Auburn.

Turman is commitment No. 27 for UGA’s 2013 class, with the Bulldogs likely to sign around 32-34 in February. Some of the top remaining targets are DT Montravius Adams, OL Laremy Tunsil, DT Toby Johnson, OL Tyrone Crowder, DB Brendan Langley (committed to South Carolina) and WR Ja’Quay Williams (committed to Auburn).

On Tuesday, UGA both gained and lost a recruit. DB Steven Nelson, a Warner Robins native who plays for a California junior college, backed off his pledge to UGA because he hadn’t heard much from the Bulldogs since committing last February. Click here to read more.

So we lose on Derrick Henry, get stalled on Kamara, and now have to take a kid nobody has ever heard of to save face? They need to fire Rodney Garner and his staff.

Great get for UGA. Turman is a big physical back with good speed. The best thing I like about this young man is like Marshall and Gurly, by all accounts he is a high caliber character and hard worker. It would be nice for Kamara to come join these type of young men and play for a high character coach like Mark Richt. GO DAWGS!!!

Now if we can sign some athletic OLinemen. This was considered a great year in Georgia for OL and we get one guy that will help. I cannot deny we are getting skill guys, but our OL recruiting has been terrible for years. Let Grantham recruit our OL. He knows what it takes. If you disagree, then it has to be coaching and strength training.

Steven Nelson publicly stated that he was guaranteed a starting position by UGA and he was looking around because UGA was still recruiting other CBs. We all know he wasn’t guaranteed anything but a scholarship if he signs. You have to earn a starting position. Welcome AJ Thurman to DawgNation.

Gotta think Reuben Foster is also on the Dawgs radar if CGC gets axed at AU like some are suspecting. Dawgs continue to recruit and stay in communication so that is very much in my humble opinion a possibility.

So UGA lost a top recruit. They also gained one. Things happen. These commitments are A) verbal, and B) decisions made by teenagers. We’ll see more movement among both the committed players and those who have yet to accept an offer but are leaning toward one school or another. Be patient – UGA recruiting for 2013 will be in the top 5 when it’s all finished.

Congratulation young man, I myself being a ex ball player w/ Univ of Minn, but from Athens wish you the best.If you can’t be part of Gophernation, being part of Dawgnation is great. Study hard, play hard and live good. This ain’t H.S. so come prepared to WORK HARD. Make CMR have to play you into the rotation and Marshall & Gurley stay hungry and hope to see all ya’ll along with Kamara playing on Sunday.

Welcome to UGA where running back run up the middle never around the end and you will never win NC only the SEC east when Fla and Auburn are down. And no defense next year when Jones and company go to NFL.

funny when only ESPN says a kid is 4 star, Carvell says he is 4 star, but if Scout or Rivals say they are 3 star he says they are 4 star. If Rivals or Scout says 4 star, then he says what they say instead of an ESPN 3 star. Anything to make the Leghumpers look superior.
