Carl Lawson vaults all the way to No. 2 in ESPN rankings (video)

The new ESPN rankings came out this week, and Carl Lawson has vaulted all the way up the charts to the nation’s No. 2 overall prospect — right another Georgian, Robert Nkemdiche.

Lawson, a 6-foot-2, 250-pound defensive end from Milton High School, was No. 5 in the previous rankings. “It’s pretty cool, I guess,” he said.

Lawson is also a member of the AJC’s Super 11 team. He has had a monster senior season, racking up 21 sacks despite being blocked by two or three defenders on most plays.

What’s the latest with recruiting? Lawson remains committed to Auburn and told the AJC again on Wednesday that he will wait until after his senior season to decide whether or not he will visit other colleges.

Lawson said he was being recruited the hardest by Auburn, Tennessee, UCLA, USC, Clemson, North Carolina, Florida State, Oklahoma State, and Auburn.

Before the haters get on here and say “Gardners lazy” “UGA doesn’t know what it’s doing” etc. and then in the next article wonder why we recruit “thugs”, well some of these kids are more trouble than they are talented and we are going in a different direction regarding character vs talent.

All that being said I know nothing of Carl Lawson as a person and don’t mean to even hint at this young man having anything other than quality character. It’s just what might be going on regarding some of these highly ranked recruits going out of state and not being heavily recruited by UGA.

Good luck Carl on the recruiting trail and remember when ever you get on campus you are no longer the most talented player on campus and your work effort will be what separates you from the rest. Keep your head down, stay humble, work hard, and do great things in life!

Auburn has a good defensive recruiting class…wonder if it’ll stay together if the Chizzy gets the boot? They’ll have to bring in a defensive minded head coach to keep the class intact…Kirby maybe? I’m guessing Strong to Arky…Petrino to Kentucky…Dooley stays another year. But heck, who knows.

My kids plays behind Lawson @ Milton. He is a good kid and a hard worker. Confident/Arrogant yes but what else would you want for a DE. Georgia never keeps the best in the state. Just look at any team in the south’s depth chart. They are all loaded with studs from GA. Once Georgia keeps their best they will be able to compete with anyone in the nation. Go Noles!

I’ve seen him play many times and met him – he seems like a very focused, level headed, well spoken young man who will be a real asset for whoever winds up with him on campus. And he always wears Auburn gear. Which pains me being a Dawg fan.

miland dog…..you are right, why go to AU now? Big changes coming, which will be followed by uncertain times for players. But there was a time (Dye & Bowden) that it was a great school to attend.

G-Dawg….you also make good points. I dissagree that Petrino will land a big Univ job now. Can’t imagine Kentucky would go near this guy.

Isaac Rochelle (Notre Dame), Robert Nkemdiche (ole Miss) and Carl Lawson (Aubarn) are possibly the three best DE’s in the country and UGA will miss on all three. Someone is asleep at the switch. UGA is coming in late on Adams, rated by most the # 1 DT but at least they have a chance with him.. UGA missed a great opportunity of getting a real Dream Team defense. Also missed on #1 Safety Vonn Bell. All of these guys are from Georgia and UGA is slipping in recruiting their home sate.

Before some of you people get on this blog, do some homework. Georgia’s depth chart is loaded with top twenty Talent. I challenge anybody on here to find me one player on that Defense that wasn’t ranked top 50 nationally. From Jenkins, to Jones, Ogletree, Williams, Herrera, and even Garrison Smith who was backing up Abry Jones. You fly by fans have the # 5 team in AMERICA, and are one game away from the SECCG to play Bama. and you wanna complain about a HS kid that may or may not work out! Well let me remind you all don’t work out, here’s a few:Washun Ealey, Carlton Thomas, Caleb King, Michael Lemon(N.C State now) Isiah Crowell, Nick Marshall, Zac Mattenberger, The Benedict kid at Va Tech. Also every kid that is born and raised in Georgia isn’t a Georgia Man. I got recruited by Univ of Minn right outta Athens and actually wanted to see how the rest of the world lives. Sweet days, still love the Dawgs, but had to go spread my wings

These talented kids are passing on UGA because they do not want to sit for 2 years before seeing significant playing time. Why would you go to UGA and wait your turn behind other 4 and 5 star recruits when you can go to Auburn, Notre Dame, Clemson, etc. and play right away. Believe it or not kids no longer care about winning first, they care about being a star and going pro. So they go where they feel they can do that the quickest it’s no knock against UGA it’s just the truth.
