Nick Marshall: Dismissed UGA player revitalizes football career … at QB

Somewhere in the middle of Kansas, there has been a rebirth of the football career of one of UGA’s former star recruits.

And the kid is doing it at the position that earned all the original accolades and praise – quarterback.

Nick Marshall is putting up Nintendo-like numbers this season while playing quarterback at Garden City junior college in Kansas. He has passed for 2,168 yards and 16 touchdowns, while rushing for 714 yards and 13 touchdowns.

After a legendary high school career at QB, Nick Marshall played one season at UGA at DB before being dismissed

After a legendary high school career at QB, Nick Marshall played one season at UGA at DB before being dismissed

It seems like an entirely different world than last season at UGA, when Marshall showed promise as a freshman by appearing in a few games at defensive back but was later dismissed for an undisclosed violation of team rules. Multiple sources told ESPN that Marshall and another player were connected to an incident involving theft of money.

Marshall then landed at Garden City, where he wasn’t necessarily supposed to play quarterback but quickly won over the coaches with his stellar practices at the position.

“I guess it was kind of a mutual deal for Nick to play quarterback,” Garden City coach Jeff Tatum told the AJC on Wednesday.

“I knew about him when he was at Wilcox County High School, and I knew what kind of quarterback he was. It surprised me when he went to Georgia as a defensive back. I was really impressed with him at quarterback after watching him in high school.”

Somewhere in Kansas, Marshall has transformed back into the “difference-maker” from his glory days in high school. Marshall still holds the state record for career touchdown passes with 103 from 2007-2010.

“I’ve seen some of his games over the Internet this year and … he looks good,” Wilcox County coach Mark Ledford told the AJC. “Some of those things he’s doing, it doesn’t surprise me at all. He did the same things for us, he’s just doing it for them now.

“Plus he’s bigger and stronger, and he looks faster. Nick with the ball in his hands, he’s a difference-maker.”

Marshall has played so well at Garden City that he is reminding some people of one of college football’s all-time greats at QB – no, not Cam Newton, although there is an Auburn connection.

“Everybody out here compares him to Michael Bishop with his throwing ability and his running ability,” Tatum said. “Michael Bishop kind of helped Kansas State turn their program around and get into the national spotlight. He’s still a pretty famous guy out here, and that’s who everybody compares him to. Matter of fact, our offensive coordinator was on the staff of Kansas State at the same time that Michael Bishop was there.”

Now the connection with Auburn and Cam Newton, who also experienced a rebirth at a junior college after originally signing with Florida out of high school — Marshall’s first scholarship offer while at Garden City came from Arkansas State coach Guz Malzahn, who was Newton’s offensive coordinator at Auburn during his Heisman Trophy-winning season.

On top of that, Auburn sent an assistant to Garden City on Monday to meet with Marshall, who also holds offers from Kansas State and Texas Tech. Marshall has also has serious interest from Auburn and Kansas, among others.

“A bunch of people have inquired about him,” Tatum said. “A lot of colleges didn’t realize he was here. The word is just now getting out. A lot of people assumed he was still at Georgia. We didn’t exactly go around telling everybody was here. But after the great year he’s having for us, people are finding out.”

What about UGA? Is there the possibility that he could return to play for the Bulldogs? “I don’t know if Georgia has contacted him or not about anything, but Georgia hasn’t contacted me on anything,” said Nick’s high school coach.  Added his JC coach, “I haven’t heard from Georgia at all.”

Marshall had been torn between playing QB or DB when he signs again with a four-year school. QB has always been No. 1 in his heart, but he feels like he has a better chance of playing after college at DB. However, Marshall seems to be leaning toward his true love after the fast and furious start to this season.

“I think he will play quarterback,” Tatum said. “Here, he’s really fallen back in love with quarterback. I think he will do whatever is best for him. I think right now he feels like he is a Division I quarterback.

“Everybody knows he is a great athlete. What a lot of people have talked to him about is giving him a legit shot at quarterback. They know if he doesn’t make it at QB, he can always go to safety or corner.”

Depending on his grades from this semester at Garden City, Marshall could sign and transfer to a D1 school as early as January. Because he did not redshirt at either Georgia or junior college, Marshall will have three years to play two seasons of NCAA ball. That’s an advantage for colleges that may want Marshall to sit out the first year while learning the system.

Raises more questions about Richt’s ability to best utilize talent. Of course we’ll never know for sure unless he signs with another D-1 school.

I”ve seen another guy put up unworldy numbers at a Kansas JC after leaving UGA, who was supposed to be the savior to LSwho’s offense. I’m glad he’s not at UGA anymore. He can’t read bigtime defense and makes horrible decisions under pressure. JC isn’t D1.

JUCO is not major college football, lest we forget. He will have to prove himself at the Div. 1 level and that is a big step from a small CC in Kansas. Remember Dorthy, you aren’t in Kansas anymore.
I wish the kid luck but I doubt his future lies at QB, unless he has matured quite a bit in both his decisions on and off the field.

I hope Nick Marshall plays QB at Auburn and comes back to burn us. We deserve it because our terrible recruiting evaluation. I saw Nick play three times, and he never played a snap on defense. Best QB I ever saw in high school.

interesting, thank you for your lack of knowledge about Nick Marshall. When he was being recruited at UGA he didn’t want to play QB and wanted to play CB so he could also play basketball. Tech recruited him as a QB and he told them the same thing. As for Cam Newton, he was told the only way you will see time on the field as a freshman would be at tight end.

__________

You forgot to add that the RECRUIT himself turned down the chance to play QB coming out of HS because HE wanted to have the best shot possible to play in the NFL.

This isn’t like Cam Newton where the Ga. coaches wanted him at another position against the wishes of the Recruit.

Marshal wanted to play DB to improve his chances at the NFL.

Telling only HALF the story will get you exposed rather quickly on these blogs where many of the fans actually follow CFB!

@WNE, that is false. Nick always wanted to play QB. He was coached to say the company line about DB/basketball because UGA had the top QB in the South committed at the time, the Lemay kid. Saying anything publicly otherwise would create waves. Nick was always a QB.

Wow. Cam Newton gets recruited as a TE at UGA and goes on to win a Juco and a D-1 National Championship at QB and then is the #1 pick at said position. Nick Marshall holds the state record in TDs as a QB, is recruited as a DB by UGA, is now at a juco putting up “nintendo type numbers” and is being recruited by major D-1 schools to play QB. Wow.

Great job UGA staff.

If you break the law, you must pay the price and playing football at a junior college in Garden City, Kansas is part of paying the price. My opinion, you had your chance at UGA, just like Mettenberger, and if you aren’t willing to follow the law you have made your decision and need to move on. Best wishes but not in Athens. Character and honesty above all.

Nick, no we all have made mistakes in life. Spilling your milk at the table, taking a wrong turn and getting lost, answering a question on a test wrong are mistakes. Willfully and eagerly taking something of someone else’s that doesn’t belong to you isn’t a mistake because he knew, or should have known, that what he was doing was wrong.

just for you guys that know very little about his situation and him signing with UGA…maybe you can actually understand this…He wanted to be a two-way star at UGA and was planning on playing on the Basketball team, he also was offered the chance to compete in for the QB position, but he felt his goal was better served for playing DB, ;and lets not forget he was and is a very, very talented DB…also preparing to be a QB on the Div 1 level and also playing basketball are twe different things than playin QB at the JUCO level…I hope that clears it up for you haters…Again, let me be clear, the young man wanted to play DB at UGA and felt his future was there…but I wouldn’t expect any thing different from some of you so-called experts….I wish the young man well, and sounds like he is getting his act together.

DAWGSTER THAT IS WRONG. Quit hiding behind your lame screen name, too. Nick was never offered the opportunity to play QB at UGA. That is a lie. He went their because two of his buddies from AAU basketball (Caldwell & Gates) signed there. He was told specifically that he would never get to play QB because the Dawgs already had a commit from the preacher’s son who got kicked out of high school. He will never play basketball in college. That was just something to distract the media about Bobo forbidding him to play QB. Now he’s going to play QB at Auburn and will make UGA pay for their lameness just like Cam Newton did.

Nick is trying to move on from his very serious msitake . Good luck to him. Lots of stone casters on here.

That said, UGA played him at DB and on kick coverage last year – when he was OBVIOUSLY the best QB in Athens, including Tarkenton and Andy Johnson. Another bone-headed move by the coaches.

Gee, I wonder why? Nick Marshall owes none of you anything, let alone a kiss in the rear.

@dawgster

In reality, what are the chances that UGA coaches actually wanted him to play QB? His style of play does not suit Richt’s offense. The DB option was not on the table until they presented it. Every football player who plays basketball in high school also wants to play basketball on the next level. So the coaching staff, not Nick, suggested that it be best to play DB if he also wanted to play basketball. So semantically, you are correct, but not completely. Nick did not volunteer to play DB; it was a suggestion and he took the bait. If the coaches really wanted him to play QB, then playing DB would have never came up.

“Doesn’t surprise me..Auburn picking up thuds wherever they can..got to keep the Cam danasty going..”

Name one thing that makes Cam Newton a thug, besides the color of his skin? And don’t play stupid. One does not have to be racist in order to make a racist, biased, comment based off of one’s skin color. Still talking about the money? What are the chances that any Black male, let alone two, will get away with collecting $180,000-$225,000 cash following an investigation by none other than the SEC, NCAA, FBI, the other SEC, and Homeland Security? Absolute zero. And yes sir, all of those agencies investigated Cam and Cecil Newton.
