Robert Nkemdiche: Recruiting decision will be FINAL “probably when I sign the paper”

Robert Nkemdiche, after his high school game this past weekend, confirmed again with reporters that his family was “torn” between Clemson and Ole Miss.

And the nation’s No. 1 consensus prospect also told 247sports.com’s Keith Niebuhr something that was interesting. It may not be good news for Clemson, where Nkemdiche is currently committed.

Asked when he will have a final decision about his recruitment, the heralded five-star defensive end from Grayson (Ga.) replied, “I think probably when I sign the paper.”

That’s going to mean a long four months — and maybe a lot of Tums — for Clemson and Ole Miss fans. Nkemdiche will make his college decision official on signing day, which is Feb. 6.

Last week, Nkemdiche caused shockwaves in Clemson when he told ESPN’s Kipp Adams “My mom wants me to go to Ole Miss.”

Could Ole Miss pull off the recruiting upset? (AP)

The 6-foot-5, 280-pounder has been committed to Clemson since last June. Two of his Grayson teammates are also pledged to Clemson, RB-LB Wayne Gallman and best friend David Kamara at DB. Nkemdiche has also lived often with the family of QB Nick Schuessler, who gave up his scholarship to Mississippi State to join Clemson this fall as a walk-on.

What about Ole Miss? His older brother, Denzel Nkemdiche, is a red-shirt linebacker and has blossomed into one of the SEC’s best young defenders.

Here’s our Nkemdiche question for today: If you had to make a recruiting decision based on playing with family or friends, which one would you choose and why? Please post below.

I bet he ends up at Ole Miss. It’s a great campus and his brother def has done well there. The team is def improved and seems to have bought into Coach Freeze. I think in the end Ole Miss will be hard to beat. I think the fact that his brother has done so well there helps Ole Miss’s case here too.

If RN wants to go be cozy with his brother and never have a shot to play for a National Title, that’s his perogative. If he wants to be at a program on the rise, with his teammates on one of the most beautiful campuses in the country, not to mention phenomenal fans…play at Clemson!

I’m thinking he’s now waiting to confirm his commitment until after his brother announces he’s also transferring to Clemson. That’s about the only rumor nobody else has come up with yet, isn’t it? ;-)

I think he’s more concerned about the NFL than playing for a national championship. He can play anyplace and get drafted but going to Clemson does not mean he will ever play for a national tile.Maybe the Ole Miss staff is showing his famly tapes of last year’s Orange Bowl.

To answer today’s question:
If I had elderly parents or grand parents I would go to the closest school so they could come and not only watch me play but be apart of an amazing journey for me that only a hand full of students per year get to experience. If it didn’t matter to my parents and it really didn’t matter to me whether they showed up for the games because I was raised to be independent from my parent I would go to a school where I wanted to go. It wouldn’t matter if none of my friends went there. The great thing about team sports especially football at the college level is I would have 120 new friend when I walked onto campus. In college most kids are just like you and it is real easy to make friends fast. You are just turning another page into your growth as a mature adult.

Parents, Parents, Parents, especially moms. Support your childs decision and quiet trying to be his advisor/agent. He has to spend the next 3 or 4 years there on the campus dealing with coaches, media, classes, agents, etc and not the parents. It is about the kid not about MOM or dad. If his dad is fine with him going to Clemson and that is where he wants to go then Clemson should be the place. He respects his parents thoughts, and suggestions, and parents should respects his choice and decision.

You don’t honestly think ANY ACC school will be playing for a National Title any time soon, do you? Beautiful campus? You’re randomly located off 85 at the Ga/SC border. You’re Auburn with a lake. A whack lake at that. Yall beat Auburn 26-19 Week One. We just drubbed Auburn and dropped 41 on them. Now I can take other SEC schools calling us bottom feeders, hopeless. etc…but not from ACC schools. You play in the ACC, I assure you we would win 7-9 games a year playing there instead of the SEC West. So call us what you want Clempson, but you’re not getting Robert, and you sure as hell ain’t competing for a National Title anytime soon.

Damn! West Virginia just scored AGAIN

I don’t understand why everyone gets upset about these recruiting soap operas. We see the same thing every year and now that we have internet and all of these recruiting services and papers like the AJC willing to chase these kids around and write stories about them expect more of the same. And of coarse he is going to wait until signing day because he knows he will continue to get media coverage by playing Games. Ray drew did exactly the same thing and now 2 years into his career he has done nothing on the football field. I suppose it’s better to get the attention while you can because many of these drama queens will never be heard from again.

As somebody who is close to the family, I can tell you that this kid has his heart set on Ole Miss. How many of you would pass up the chance to play with your family member and help a team rebuild? Not to mention a team that plays in the best conference in America? Robert has his eyes set on the NFL one day and the SEC gives him the best chance for that. Look at what Patrick Willis did over at Ole Miss. Ole Miss will win out for this kid and all of you that are for Clemson or any other school…grow up and get used to it. The SEC is where it is these days and Ole Miss offers a lot for this kid in particular. Expect the change of commitment within the next few days/weeks.

Clemson is a hell of a lot higher ranked than any SEC school other than UF and Mizzou. So he should go to one of those dumber SEC schools where he belongs. He is obvisouly not very bright. Another Crowell for the SEC embeciles. You may need to look that word up. If he wants a liberal arts degree, go SEC. If he wants a job, go ACC.

…first of all, that’s Rick James biaaach! Next, do you happen to know a lot of Africans? That’s a very large continent and I would say if we really checked the stats, most of them probably don’t have much education. However, if you are referring to the ones who make it out to Britian or the United States, you’re probably right. HOWEVER, again, a college degree is just a piece of paper when you know that the bigger achievement is the millions of dollars waiting in the NFL. I never heard a story of NFL players bragging about my degree is better than yours.

A little recruiting news regarding Laremy Tunsil.

Derrick Henry:
“Laremy was at my game Friday night. I talked to him, his mom and his dad. I just try to see what he is thinking. He still has Alabama No. 1 and Georgia No. 2. His mom hasn’t been to Alabama, and I think that’s the big factor.

“Personally, I think we will get him. It’s because I am recruiting him, and I expect to be successful. There is no question about it. I want Laremy in this class, and I expect it will happen.”

My son is probably making more money than you and probably has a better looking wife/girlfriend than you do. Ole Miss reaps plenty of benefits during and after tenure. Sounds like you are just another fan tired of the SEC owning the college football landscape. You keep on drinking your ACC or other conference kool-aid!

To answer the question, neither. This young man has a gift and the potential to make a ridiculous amount of money some day. I would not chance that for the opportunity to play with friends and family. I would encourage him to choose the program best suited to prepare him for the NFL and for life after college. We all know where that is…
