Toby Johnson: Nation’s No. 1 JC prospect will check out UGA

No. 1-ranked JC prospect, Toby Johnson (247sports)

No. 1-ranked JC prospect, Toby Johnson (247sports)

UGA will be one of the five official visits for the nation’s No. 1 overall prospect from the junior college ranks.

Toby Johnson is a 6-foot-5, 310-pound defensive tackle from Hutchinson Community College in Kansas. He is rated as the country’s No. 1 JC player by 247sports.com, plans to graduate in December, and would provide an instant boost to a UGA defense which will be depleted by graduation next year.

“Yes, I know for a fact that Georgia is going to get an official visit,” Johnson told the AJC.

“I definitely feel good about Georgia. They are one of my top schools. I’ve got a real good relationship with coach Mark Richt. I feel like he’s a player’s coach.”

Johnson hasn’t set a date for his UGA trip, but said it will likely be for the Ole Miss game on Nov. 3 or for the team’s mid-December gala.

What’s the deal with Johnson? He grew up in Mississippi and moved to the Atlanta area to live with family when he was 14 years old. “I wasn’t a Georgia fan growing up but I wasn’t in the state early enough to grow up a fan of the Bulldogs. I liked Auburn and Mississippi State.”

After finishing at Banneker in 2010, Johnson signed with Hutchinson but decided instead to attend a prep school, Atlanta Sports Academy. “I left after a few months because I didn’t like it there.”

The following year, Johnson reported to Hutchinson and quickly emerged as one of the top players on a team loaded with D1 prospects. Johnson has around 31 football scholarship offers and has already taken one official visit, traveling to Oklahoma two weeks ago.

“I’d give it a 9 or 10,” said Johnson, when asked to rank his Oklahoma trip. “I just saw how they reacted to the loss to Kansas State. They’re not used to losing. You can just tell that Oklahoma is used to winning.”

What was the best thing that Bob Stoops said during the visit? “He just basically told me that no other place will give me the opportunity that they will. They have three seniors leaving on the defensive line, along with a junior that will probably leave early for the NFL.”

Was Johnson tempted to commit? “No, no, no. Out here, if you commit, you can’t go on any more official visits. You can’t do any of that out here. I’m not in any hurry to commit.”

The No. 1 JC prospect likes Mark Richt because "he's a player's coach" (AJC)

What’s next for Johnson? He has scheduled an official visit to Ole Miss for Nov. 24. He hasn’t set up any other trips yet but said he was being recruited the hardest by UGA, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Miami and Ole Miss.

“I think I want to go to places that I’ve never seen before,” Johnson said. “I’ve never been to California so I might end up going to USC. I’ve never been to Florida so I might end up taking a visit to Florida or Miami. I want to go to places that I probably won’t ever see. I’m hoping to take all five visits.”

Johnson also stated that he does not have a leader or a timeline on reaching his college decision. “I really don’t have a date set. When I feel like it’s time to commit, I’m just going to do it.”

Note: Toby Johnson also clarified to the AJC that he was not part of any rumored “package deal” to Tennessee. The former assistant head coach at Hutchinson, Brandon Staley, joined Tennessee’s football staff last March, one month after another 5-star prospect from the junior college, Cordarrelle Patterson, signed with the Volunteers. Up until the final hours before signing day, nearly every recruiting analyst was predicting for Patterson to UGA.

A Tennessee spokesman told the AJC last March that there was “no correlation between his hire and Patterson.”

Ironically, Johnson’s roommate at Hutchinson last year was Patterson and his roommate this year is DT Ben Bradley, who is committed to Tennessee. It has fueled rumors that Johnson is set to the join the group in Rocky Top — which Johnson flat out denies.

“That coach went there because it was the best decision for him, while I need to go somewhere that is the best decision for me to help my family out. I’m not part of any package deal to Tennessee. I don’t know about CP and Ben, but I don’t think they were either. It’s just that [Staley] is a great coach. He’s one of the best coaches anywhere in junior college, and he got a great opportunity to coach at the next level. I think some more of our coaches this year will get the same opportunities. Then what are people going to say?”

Georgia will return 9 starters on offense but will send their 3 defensive lineman to the NFL. Georgia already has 8 defensive lineman in the NFL. Great opportunity at Georgia.

He would be quite a catch for UGA, and it sounds like he favors them. He could be an EE, and that would also be great although, UGA has only nine total EE’s they could bring in, and I think that is filling up pretty fast. You couldn’t pass up this opportunity though, if you are UGA. Anytime, you can get a young man that has already played some college ball, and has the physical dimensions this young kid already has, you need to jump at the chance to get him. Once again, we see the allure of playing for CMR, and how his style and the relationship he invokes in players benefits UGA. If UGA wins Saturday against the chickens, recruiting will also be just a little easier as well.

So, the rumor is true. CMR is miffed at Dooley for pulling CP away from the Dawgs at the last minute. Dooley must have already known Da’Rick Rodgers was not going to play for them this year. Let’s just say Tennessee pulled off a great move to give them inside position on 3 players they sorely needed. Now CMR must respond in kind with his own ‘package deal.’

Did you and Bobo even notice who played in their offensive line!? You pobably didn’t want to. These are just the type of athletes you need to finally bring UGA a National Title after 32 years! Yet, in the face of these facts, you and Booboo continue to do the same thing, year after year. In the name of all that is holy, move Chris Burnette to Center and Xzavier Ward to Right tackle. Why in the hell you and Bobo insist on playing private school products like Andrews and Theus is beyund all reason! They don’t belong at this level, nearly cost you the Tennessee game and WILL cost you the Carolina game. Who you’ll play right guard is beyond me. Your crazy talent evaluation has left you with no more legitimte SEC players. You should consider moving Michael Thornton, who threw Andrews around like a rag doll in one on one drills, to right guard instead of him languishing on the bench as a 3rd team nose guard! Then get commitments from Joshua Outlaw and Maurice Swain. Have Outlaw and Ward turn Octavious Jackson from Florida, sign Tunsil and turn Shamire Devine from Tech. Move John-John Atkins to Center (he’ll be an All-American), and go pick up your Rings! You owe it to the UGA fans to sign AND PLAY offensive linemen of this caliber, and not some “good ole boys” that Booboo, Tereshinski, Friend, and McGarity prefer. UGA will either get Toby Johnsom or Montavius Adams and Kelsey Griffin but not all three. Johnson is ready to start right now as is Adams. Would be happy with either one though UGA would have Johnson for one or two years and Adams for 3or 4. UGA also has a couple of guys on the roster that will be very good next year. It takes at least two of these big guys rotating so they won’t run out of gas in the 4th quarter.

Tyrone Crowder (OG ****) says it’s down to UGA or Clemson. Tunsil (OT*****) says it’s down to UGA or Bama. This could be the OL class we have been waiting for at UGA. Yes Gurley and Marshall are good but everyone is running on the Vols. Florida had over 300 yards rushing against them and held the Vols to only one TD in the 2nd half while scoring 17 in the 3rd quarter to pull away from the Vols and win 37- 20. The Vols were actually ahead at the half. UGA cannot go in to a shell with a lead like they did last week and leave the defense on the field so long. UGA is thin at DE right now with Abry Jone’s ankle injury. That definitely effected the defense last week. John Jenkins played half the game at DE – a position he has never played before. He is just not a DE. Come on!

The SEC will be “defined” this weekend. The UF/LSU game will be huge for the east. Beat LSU and expose that “chink” in the armor of the west. It will re establish the east as competitive against the west. Alabama looks like the best team in the nation right now, but we know that one injury or suspension, can sour a whole season. Go Florida…
That leads us to UGA/SC. This could be one that is talked about for years to come. Other than the fact that I really, really hate SC & Lil stevie, its a shame they have to beat up on each other. It is great to have two teams vying for a position in the NCG. Either team will represent the SECe very well but UGA seems to be a more popular choice between the sports media. UGA will need a better effort from the defense and less errors from the offense to come out if Columbia with a win.
This is a huge defining moment for the east…

The thing that’s wrong with the defense is the same minor, but critical issues: Conditioning, tackling, and yes, over-scheming by Grantham. Georgia has the athletes, talent, and depth to overcome conditioning and stick to a simple scheme. When you have two 350 + lb noseguards, Alec Ogletree running around with 4.3 speed, and Jarvis Jones, then just line up and win your individual match-ups. There were just too many stunts and shifts by the defense. You don’t necessarily have to trick college QB’s and offensive coordinators (unless he has NFL experience, then I can see the reason). The tackling, ooohhh the tackling. You can say it was a matter of the defense getting tired because the offense was scoring too fast. But this is a college D1 roster. Both sides of the ball are 3 deep. This ‘conditioning’ issue is getting a little old. It needs to be solved this weekend because teams like S. Carolina, Florida, LSU, and Alabama will just grind out games until the defensive starters wear down and win the game in the 4th quarter. Sounds familiar? Furthermore, Malcome Mitchell needs to permanently be on defense. Georgia has enough play makers on offense. Just my two cents.

Let me add: As a black male, folks like Tide Roll make real issues of racism, bias, and preference hard to be realized and overcome when you continuously spit out drivel. What he has to ‘grow up’ and realize is this reality: most dual-threat, mobile QB’s are Black, but those type of QB’s are not preferred by both both BoBo and CMR. It just so happens that most of them are Black. Richt would not have recruited neither Driskell nor Johnny Manzeil, or Tebow for that matter. I agree that he needs to adapt his system sometimes to accomodate certain types of talent. But most successful people choose to stick to the system that got them there and I’m perfectly ok with that. There is no race issue here, just a coincidence.

Richt recruits private school kids for no other reason than it fits his personality. Those kids tend to be well mannered and can take coaching well. Albeit, they ‘may’ lack a nasty streak. Nick Saban’s personality is all fire. Players with a tougher coat of skin can and/or tend to take risks, can ‘accept’ and comply with his methods better. They need tough love, something Saban, not Richt, can provide

Murray is fumble prone, Bobo, is nervous under pressure, and the Defense better be straightened out quickly. Jenkins ain’t a DE, where is highly ranked Ray Drew, and why is Dawson only getting some playing time? These are serious quetions that must be answered, and the drought will be broken. Why did Marshall get the Ball only ten times and isn’t being used in split backfield sets with Gurley for swing pass looks? Why Richard Samuels isn’t getting at least five touches a game and Chase Vasser still starting when it’s obvious Herrera, and Ogletree are the better two LB’s? All three DL’s will sign, and they’ll be beast in the east next year. Finally if they loose to S. Carolina Saturday, all that Richt has worked for starts to fall. Spurrier has the gift of Gab and will definately let EVERYBODY KNOW he beat GEORGIA three years straight. Things gotta change, and it starts Saturday.

DE is all of a sudden a problem for UGA. Abry Jones has an ankle injury and played very little last week. His backups are primarily freshmen and redshirt freshmen. It is his responsibility to clear the way for the LB’s to get to the QB or the RB. This was a major problem last week. John Jenkins (DT) played out there several plays and Gaethers played NT. Jenkins is a DT – way to big to play DE. Will Abry Jones be able to play at a high level this week. If so, UGA wins – if not – it will be difficult

slydog – sounds like you are a little prejudiced against “private” school kids. Richt recruits a whole lot more “public” school guys. May have two or three private school guys on the whole team. Marlon Brown is private school but they play against public schools -just like when I was at Woodward. Our private school kicked plenty of public school butt. ( I also attended public schools). Going to a public school doesn’t make you any tougher – though you do have to put up with more crap like drugs and thugs. At Woodward if you can’t cut it academically, if you get involved with drugs, if you are a thug – you are gone PERIOD. At public schools the teachers are handcuffed by the teachers unions and the P.C. Cadets and they have to put up with drugs and thugs.

Gamecocks have 6′8″ on one DE; 6′6″ on the other DE. They have big DT’s. Murray is going to need exceptional OL play for the passing game. Safety DJ Swearinger is not like Vols safeties; he will make tackles. Dogs are going to have to play their very best. The gamecocks are good; plus they know how much Spurrier revels in beating the Dogs.

Here we go again! Will you ever learn? Posting the same old tired stuff. My patience is beginning to wear thin, but I will address some of your more illogical statements.

Your view of recruiting is, to be kind, naive. You don’t just “get” someone. It is a two way street. The school must offer, and the prospect must accept. Would that it were as easy as you make it out to be.

Still beating a dead horse with Anthony Jennings. He and Willie were understanding of Georgia’s position, and showed no hard feelings about Brice Ramsey being the only QB commit in this class. Anthony committed to a bigtime program, so why are you so upset over this? Logically thinking, you should be upset over Bama missing out on him, and having two white QB commits instead. Of course, if you thought logically my tutoring services would no longer be needed.

Finally, remember you are posing as a Bama fan on here, so do not go knocking private school players such as Barrett Jones. Saban is happy with him, so you can at least pretend to be, being a “Tide fan.”

Class dismissed. Another F on your post.
