Montravius Adams: 5-star DT ranks his trip to UGA

Montravius Adams was the most famous guest among the crowd of UGA recruiting targets that attended Saturday’s win over Tennessee.

How important is Montravius Adams to UGA? Mark Richt spent an hour with the 5-star before Saturday's game (AJC)

Adams is so famous that he was even recognized at The Varsity, the longtime fast-food franchise in downtown Athens.

“We were standing in line at The Varsity after the game, and some guy took a picture of Montravius with his cell phone,” Dooly County High School coach Jimmy Hughes said with a laugh. “I’d never seen anything like that in my life.”

“Montravius still had his name tag on from the game. And so many of these fans, not just with Georgia, follow recruiting so closely. They’ve seen his picture on the Internet, and they recognize him right away. Then they know I’m his high school coach, and of course they’ve got all kinds of questions. I think that can be positive to a point, when a college has got their fans knowing who the guys are that they are recruiting.”

Adams is a household name in recruiting circles. The 6-foot-4, 310-pound defensive tackle is ranked as the nation’s No. 2 overall college football prospect by 247sports.com. The consensus 5-star is the state’s top uncommitted recruit.

Saturday’s visit to UGA was the first for Adams in around six months. He gave it a grade of “a 7 or 8″ on a scale of 1-10.

“It was a competitive game; the fans stayed into it and they supported the team the whole game,” Adams said. “The coaches did a good job. Both teams defensively didn’t play great football. The score was too high.”

This season, Adams has also made unofficial visits to Florida State and to the Georgia Dome to watch both Auburn and Clemson. “Out of the games I went to this year, it was the best. It was better than the Florida State or Clemson games. It was a better game, and better atmosphere. Well, all the atmospheres were great. It was a better game, though.”

Even though it was an unofficial visit, Adams got the royal treatment. He arrived at UGA on early Saturday, and he got to spend the day with the Bulldogs. He met with Mark Richt for nearly an hour. He also talked at length with a couple of UGA commits — DB Shaq Wiggins and QB Brice Ramsey — who all tried to recruit him for the Bulldogs. During the game, Adams sat with the charismatic Wiggins. After the game, Adams got to hang out with UGA nose tackle John Jenkins, who has become a fast friend. The two exchange text messages of encouragement each week.

“I think it went well,” Hughes said. “He got to speak with Coach Richt for an extended period of time, probably close to an hour. I think he liked some of the things he heard. I can tell you that Georgia did a good job with him.

“Coach Richt was selling the football program, as well as the atmosphere they are creating there … the academics, the majors that are available, the support there for the players, and what’s expected out of the players. We basically went through what a day and week would be like during the football season, and during the offseason.”

UGA will have its best shot at 5-star DL Montravius Adams when he brings his mother to the Bulldogs' game vs. Ole Miss (AJC)

UGA will have its best shot at 5-star DL Montravius Adams when he brings his mother to the Bulldogs' game vs. Ole Miss on Nov. 3 (AJC)

What stuck out the most? “If you look down Georgia’s roster and watch the games being played, their defense is going to have a lot of holes in it next year,” Hughes said. “They’ve got a lot of seniors on that defense, particularly the defensive front. There’s going to be a lot of empty places on that defense that somebody is going to have to fill. That’s one of the things that Montravius has consistently said that he wants to look at with an university — the opportunity to play early. I think there will be some opportunity at the University of Georgia.”

What are the biggest things in UGA’s favor? “Every D1-caliber kid is thinking he can play at the next level in the NFL. One of the things they look at is at each position, how many players at my position that played at this college have gone onto the NFL. That’s quite an ambitious thing, but that’s high school kids for you. Most of them believe they can get to the NFL. And I think Georgia has a lot of defensive lineman in the league. They’ve had several over the last few years, and I’d say they have a couple of potential ones on the team now.”

Probably the most notable negative for UGA was that Montravius’ mom couldn’t make the trip at the last minute. However, Richt addressed that immediately.

“Coach Richt invited me to come back with my momma for the Ole Miss game,” Adams said. “She didn’t get to come this time but she’s coming to that game.”

Ironically, UGA will also likely have the nation’s No. overall prospect on campus for that same Nov. 3 game –Grayson defensive end Robert Nkemdiche, who is committed to Clemson. His older brother plays for Ole Miss.

Back to Montravius: Having his mother on a visit is critical because she will be helping him make his college decision.

“He loves his mother a lot and cares deeply about her,” Hughes said. “Montravius wants his mother involved in his decision. In order for her to make the decision, he wants her to see some of these places. He wants his mother to be able to experience these schools so she can help him with the decision.”

What about an official visit to UGA? Adams confirmed to the AJC that it’s unlikely to happen, but that’s not all bad news for the Bulldogs. “I wasn’t going to take one to there,” Adams said. “It’s not that far away so I can go up there anytime on an unofficial visit. My official visits are going to be to places far away like LSU, Oregon and USC.”

USC recruiting coordinator Ed Orgeron made the long trip to Dooly County last Wednesday for the day.

More with Montravius:

  • Where will Adams take his two other official visits? “I don’t know yet.”
  • What about the rumors that Clemson and Auburn are his co-leaders? “I don’t have a favorite. I like both of those schools. I still like other schools, too.”
  • Did UGA move up or down on his list after this weekend’s visit? “They are still the same with me. I still like them. They didn’t move down.”
  • What was the best thing that Richt told him? “Just that he needed me to come in and play early.”

Hope we get him. We’ll be losing quite a few folks from the D-line after this season. Unfortunate that our defense looked pretty shoddy when he was in attendance.

I think we will know more about this young mans plans after his mother and he visit later. I am sure she will like CMR and the young man can see how he will fit into UGA’s defense. He would have a chance to start early as he will be in the NFL someday and UGA is a place where he could showcase his talents right off the bat.

JB, I know you are adversarial with a lot of the posters on here, but for some reason, I have always mistaken you for a UGA fan or alum. maybe, it’s another JB. That JB is unhappy with the coaching staff and was critical of how long it took Coach R to make changes on the D…but reading this post of yours which will probably be read by Montravious and his Momma, you are just a clever (not really) UGA hater or fan of one of our competitors….maybe I’m confusing you with this guy named flat tire…all I know is it is sooo painful to read such boring and negative posts….you think anybody is really fooled by the boring drivel you put out, certainly you can’t think anyone believes it or is entertained by it!…..so, just out of curiosity, you and alum of a fan of UGA? …………now on to something very important: Good luck to you and your Momma Montravious. I am sure that UGA can prepare you well for the draft and future business opportunities around the world, and you will get a great in state education and super, worldwide networking contacts for the business investment opps that will come your way. I suppose JB’s school and the others you have it narrowed down to maybe can do the same basic thing…but our numbers of highly successful NFL players don’t lie. Many of the posters on here will tell you and anybody anything just to cause a pain or to start a rumor. Best of luck to you young man.

Before you spout off about LSU’s great defense, you may want to go back and look at the Towson (they have a football team?) game. Does anyone ever ask these top recruits why they leave the state of ga? Are they bulldog and tech fans? I don’t see many top recruits leaving Ala, LA, Cal, and Fla. We lost Robert Nkemdiche-DE to Clemson and Carl Lawson-DE and Reuben Foster-LB(he learn how to play football in the state of ga) to Auburn. That’s 3 five star players that left the state of ga in the same year to programs that are worst than uga.

Losing Montravius Adams-DT will be a disaster. Ala top recruits stays in Ala. Those Ala boys love their state but the Ga boys apparently don’t have much love for their state. What’s going on?

JustMyOpnion

@ Tony, some recruits never intend to stay in state. It’s funny how nothing is ever said when UGA goes to another state a gets a 5 star. ie.. Mathew Stafford -Texas Knowshon Moreno- New Jersey. It just happens, and if you took the time to think about how many really good players are in Georgia, you’d realize that it’s impossible to get them all.

There is nothing in Alabama to attract people to live there and make that state their home as there is with Georgia. We have a lot of players whose parents came from somewhere else, and those families don’t necessarily have allegiances to Georgia the way Alabama kids who have never left the state of Alabama do.

UGA’s DL was pushed around by the Tennesse OL last week. Especially in the run game they gave up to many yards right up the middle. The pass rush was negligible. Last year at times they went to 4 defensive linemen….. should go back to that occasionally. How about bringing in both monster DT’s at the goal line?

Don’t think Adams will end up at Auburn though he favored them early on along with Clemson. Auburn is having a down year and their defense is terrible and has been terrible even in their BCS championship year. Von Gorder has come in but he is not the super star coach some make him some make him out to be. The writing was on the wall with the Falcons – he was about to be canned. UGA has a good chance with Adams and I expect him to sign with UGA on signing day.

Just curious but why does Richt still actively recruit Robert Nkemdiche? He might be an awesome player, but reminds me too much of Crowell. Richt just needs to let him go and go after a more quality person. This guy appears to me as another “me, me, me” type of player. Just saying

The inside LB’s did not have a good day against the run saturday and the outside LB’s were absent on their pass rush. I know that Ogletree made 14 tackles, etc. etc. but he did not tackle at the point of attack well. Usually the RB was two or three yards down field before the LB’s even touched them and then they ran over them for 3 more yards – or more. To stop Lattimore the LB’s will have to get play big saturday.

Nkemdiche will attend the Nov 3rd Ole Miss / UGA game in Athens primarily because his brother plays for Ole Miss. Montravius Adams is also supposed to attend the Ole Miss game along with his mother. I know Nkemdiche is rated #1 and Adams #2 – some disagree with the order. Adams and Tunsil are definitely the top recruits on UGA’s board – even ahead of Nkemdiche and Foster.

Look at how smart I am. I am the only coach in America who can out-coach you and STILL wind up losing! Nick Saban might fit into my left tube sock. I am so smart with my antiquated offense.

And they go on probation every other year (probably again soon), and his Mom would have to travel 2000 miles to watch a game, and that big city really sucks and can’t hold a candle to Athens, and, and, and!!!!

Adams is playing his cards close to his vest.. By saying UGA is a 7 or 8 Adams is saying they are in the ball park but haven’t hit a home run yet. The ball is in play. Appears UGA is one of 5 teams that Adams is seriously considering but he doesn’t want to commit any time soon. Probably will wait til near signing day or on signing day. I would say hat Clemson and Auburn were in the lead up until this week and UGA has pulled even with them.

Orgeron works for Lame Kitten …… wouldn’t trust him for a second. Lame Kitten won’t win the national champ game this year as ESPN was hoping. UGA needs Adams. They will have Kwame Gaethers back for one more year and Taylor is being redshirted this year. Also Atkins will be coming in from jr. college. With one more DT in this class UGA will be set at DT for the next 3 or 4 years. I think Atkins could play DE. Kelsey Griffin? Not sure what is going on there.

I hope the coaching staff look at Atkins ability to play guard or tackle. He is a better OL. Can’t shed blocks like people think. Boy is a beast on the OL. Opens up lanes that grandma’s duece and a qtr can go thru sideways!

“5-Star DT Recruit Rips UGA’s Defense “…. I must have missed this in the article. You B/R boys continue to amaze me with your biased reporting. Kiffin must think he has a chance of landing this guy.
Look at yesterday’s pic of Vol coach Dooley; can you possibly make a guy look more stupid. Give it up B/R; the SEC rules!!!!!!!!
