Clemson: No NCAA wrongdoing found after NFL player tweets at Nkemdiche (UPDATED)

Clemson determined on Friday that it was not guilty of an NCAA secondary violation  after an NFL player directed a series of  Twitter messages to the nation’s No. 1-ranked high school prospect this week earlier this week.

The NFL player was De’Quan Bowers, the former Clemson All-America defensive tackle who now plays for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Bowers directed three tweets on Monday to Grayson High School defensive end Robert Nkemdiche, who is verbally committed to Clemson.

The tweets from Bowers raised concerns, particularly among fans of colleges that are competing against Clemson for Nkemdiche, that the NFL player may be illegally recruiting for the Tigers over Social Media.

On Friday, Clemson spokesman Tim Bourret told the AJC in an email, “After reviewing the matter it has been determined that no violation has occurred” and that it was “case closed.”

UGA or Alabama for 4-star RB Alvin Kamara? (AJC)

Alvin Kamara, who is considered by some to be the state’s No. 1 prospect at running back, has listed Alabama and UGA as his leaders.

Or are they his finalists? “They’re my top two schools right now,” Kamara told the AJC. “I still think other schools have a chance. But Georgia and Alabama, that’s who I am feeling right now.”

The 5-foot-10, 195-pounder from Norcross High School also has Oklahoma State, Florida State, Tennessee and Oregon in his top six, and will take an official visit to Oregon. The others are to be determined.

Why does Kamara like Alabama? “They produce high-quality players – all those guys that went in the NFL Draft last year, and you saw the game against Michigan. They put a high-quality product on the field, and that’s what I like about Alabama.”

What about UGA? “There’s opportunity at Georgia. And it’s …

The mother of Robert Nkemdiche, the nation’s No. 1-ranked prospect, told ESPN The Magazine that she is “unhappy with Clemson.”

The 6-foot-5, 280-pound defensive end from Grayson High School committed to Clemson last June.

Robert’s mother, Beverly Nkemdiche, resides in Nigeria and works in politics as a state legislator. When Beverly visited with her son over the summer, she told ESPN she was surprised how serious Robert’s commitment to Clemson was being reported:

“His decision is not final,” she says. “He’s just a teenager, and people are forgetting that. We had never discussed Clemson, and I am unhappy with Clemson. I’m not there, so I don’t know for certain, but I feel like Robert was pressured into this decision.”

One of the main reasons that Nkemdiche committed to Clemson because at least three of his Grayson teammates will be playing for the Tigers next season, including his …

EX-UGA COMMIT THINKING ABOUT PLEDGING TO BULLDOGS FOR SECOND TIME

UGA has had three de-commits in its 2013 football recruiting class, which is one of nation’s largest with 28 commitments.

WR Tramel Terry of Goose Creek, S.C., de-committed from UGA but pledged to the Bulldogs for a second time. Recruiting Diary: Georgia Tech-bound OL Shamire Devine (with video) Vol. II

Some of Atlanta’s college football prospects will be writing a weekly diary for the AJC until February’s signing day. They will be sharing their thoughts, opinions, adventures and perspectives on the recruiting journey.

Shamire DeVine is the most highly-touted member of Georgia Tech’s 2013 recruiting class. Devine, who is ranked as the state’s No. 1 offensive lineman and a 4-star by Scout.com, committed to Georgia Tech over Florida State, while also considering football scholarship offers from Florida, UGA, Tennessee and USC. He pledged to Georgia Tech in early May.

I watched Georgia Tech’s game against Virginia Tech.  It was a pretty sad ending but I know how that feels because we [my high school] just lost, minus the overtime period. It’s just one game, still got a lot more to go, and a lot of work can still be put in.

The 6-foot-2, 205-pound outside linebacker from Lovejoy High School picked MTSU over football scholarship offers from Tulane, Kent State and Furman.

“I was getting a lot of interest from a lot of other schools,” Robinson said. “Miami wanted to offer me but they wanted to see more film. Middle Tennessee was willing to take me now as I was, and said they could mold me into something. The coaches there seem genuine, and really seem to want me to do well.

“The first time I met [coach Rick Stockstill], he told me anytime I had a problem on the field, at home, or in my lovelife, to ‘take it back to him’ and he’d always have my back. That spoke to me. It seems like a real good program, and I wanted to go ahead and make it official.”

And what about that first name? “My mom, she’s a big Deion Sanders fan. She wanted to …

Reggie Carter: UGA LB commit’s feel-good story

A UGA football recruit was one of the feel-good stories of the week.

In his first complete game of high school football in nearly two years after recovering from a serious knee injury, South Gwinnett High School linebacker Reggie Carter had 19 tackles and one sack in his team’s opener on Friday.

"You can tear both

UGA to LB commit Reggie Carter: "You can tear both of your ACLs and your offer is still going to be good at Georgia" (AJC)

Carter, who committed to UGA over FSU and South Carolina last April, suffered a torn ACL and ligament damage on the 10th play of South Gwinnett’s season opener last year.

It has been a long road of recovery, and the 6-foot-1, 220-pounder was almost in tears after Friday’s game.

“There was so much emotion,” Carter told the AJC. “I was so happy and so blessed to make it through a whole game. Early in the game, I felt like going out because I was thinking ‘I don’t know if I …

DeShields, who was the first Georgia player selected in the 2010 draft at No. 8 overall, stole a pair of bases in Monday’s season-ending game for the Lancaster Jethawks – the Class A advanced affiliate of the Houston Astros.

“I just feel very blessed to be given the ability to reach that accomplishment,” DeShields told the AJC. “You don’t see it very often at all. Previously, I just wanted to do it and get it over with. [Then I] was running kind of crazy – just worried about getting on the bag so much that it distracted me from other things. But as soon as I got [to …

NCAA investigating Tony Parker for potential recruiting violations, per report (UPDATED)

The NCAA is investigating for potential recruiting violations involving Tony Parker, according to Scout.com’s UCLA website.

Parker was the AJC’s Mr. Basketball from Miller Grove High School who signed last April with UCLA over offers from UGA, Ohio State, Kansas, and Memphis.

On Sunday night, Parker’s high school coach told the AJC he was aware of the report, and also stated that he had not been contacted by the NCAA.

“Of course, I was caught off guard by this,” Miller Grove’s Sharman White said. “I think it’s the NCAA just doing what they do. If they’ve got any suspicions, I don’t know … I can’t really go on the record and say anything.

Derrick Henry: Alabama, UGA or Tennessee for 5-star football recruit?

Ex-UGA recruit Derrick Henry (247sports.com)

Ex-UGA recruit Derrick Henry (247sports.com)

Derrick Henry, the 5-star RB who was formerly committed to UGA for nearly a year, has finally set his announcement date.

The 6-foot-3, 245-pounder told BamaOnline that he will decide between Alabama, Tennessee and UGA on Sept. 28.

Henry told the website that “Alabama’s still leading, and Tennessee is right there.” He plans to attend Tennessee’s home game against Florida on Sept. 15 to get a good feel what Rocky Top is like during football season.

What about UGA? Henry picked the Bulldogs last summer at Dawg Night, stayed committed for nearly a year, and backed off his pledge in June. UGA appears to be third in a three-horse race, but Henry is close friends with UGA QB commit Brice Ramsey of Camden County and attended his game on Friday night.

Last Thursday, Henry rushed for 338 yards and 3 touchdowns in Florida’s Yulee High School’s loss to Gainesville. Henry has racked up 8,211 career rushing yards …
