Derrick Henry: Alabama beats out Tennessee for ex-UGA commit

Alabama appears to be on the way to another No. 1-ranked recruiting class (AP)

Alabama appears to be on the way to another No. 1-ranked recruiting class (AP)

Onetime UGA recruit, Derrick Henry, finally revealed his highly-anticipation on Friday afternoon.

He’s Alabama bound.

The 5-star RB from Florida’s Yulee High School picked Alabama over runner-up Tennessee, followed by UGA.

It was not a surprise that Henry committed to Alabama, as he had been favoring the Crimson Tide since early last summer.

“The way Coach Saban has his program, the way his players are when they come out, it’s amazing,” Henry told al.com. “My position playing running back with Mark (Ingram) and Trent (Richardson) what they did there and what T.J. (Yeldon) has already done there. The way they run their program, it’s like a business-style program. That’s their mentality and how they approach everything, even in the classroom.”

Henry committed to UGA in the summer of 2010, and stayed loyal to the Bulldogs for nearly a year.

Not only did Henry go from being an UGA commit to Alabama, he’s now aggressively recruiting one of UGA’s top remaining OL targets to roll with him to the Crimson Tide, 5-star Laramey Tunsil of Lake City, Fla.

Here was Henry’s first statement on Twitter after committing on Friday:

ROLL TIDE ROLL ! Hope all the TIDE fans tune tonight ! , Now lets get the recruiting started ! TUNSIL next #Leggooooo ! ##RTR!

UGA has 27 commits for its 2013 football recruiting class, but none at running back. The Bulldogs are targeting Norcross High School’s Alvin Kamara, who lists Alabama and UGA as his co-leaders. UGA is also trying to get a shot at Walton High School’s Tyren Jones, who has been committed to Alabama since last February but said he will take other visits, including one to UGA.

How will Henry’s commitment to Alabama will affect Kamara and Jones? Both have said publicly that it would not influence their college choice but it remains to be seen.

UGA loser fans will say …
1. We didn’t need him (Like any team doesn’t need a five star hahaha)
2. We have Gurley (Yes but who after that? Marshall can’t take a hit, Malcombe can’t stay healthy and everybody after that is walkons)
3. We’re getting a better tailback (sorry but you mutts have zero commits and kamara will be in title town too)

If he didn’t like competition he surely wouldn’t be going to Alabama either. Tenn would had been the easy choice . However watching the success of Mr Gurley and Marshall I would imagine the thought of red shirting wasn’t too appealing.

It’s going to be interesting to see whether Henry plays running back @ Bama or if he is willing to move. I personally think he can play rb, but that’s a crowded backfield in Tuscaloosa and unless he quits growing he is going to be 270 by the time Spring football rolls around.

bigtime, wouldn’t it make sense to wait until he plays a single down or goes through his first practice before placing him above proven college players? I don’t think he’ll end up in Richard Samuel’s situation but the simililarities are definitely there.

bigtime, you have absolutely lost your mind.. When Henry puts on 15-20 pounds of muscle from D1 strength and training he will be moved to another position. He is a beast RIGHT NOW… Running that tall and getting a bit slower due to the added weight will force him to move. If they were both in the same recruiting class I would STILL take Marshall over Henry. I guess we will see how many carries he gets next year.. God forbid he hurts himself this year… Bet you anything he wouldn’t have a scholly to Bama then;O)

Don’t give up on him UGA fans. If he gets hurt, Saban will drop him like a hot potato. I feel sorry for the boys drinking that Saban Kool-Aid. The man is evil, pure evil. Henry should have gone to Tennessee if he really thinks he is a RB. My prediction is he never plays a down in a real game at RB and become a malcontent OLB. I see attitude problems on the horizon. Has he played defense in high school? Does he like to hit? If not, he will get cut at Alabama.

Alabama has a stud freshman running back in T.J. Yeldon, so these high school kids may want to think before committing to play for the Tide. Granted, they have a great history of producing elite running backs so if the guys are willing to redshirt or wait a couple of years maybe it’s different. But Yeldon is a monster.

congrats to Henry, I’m sure he will do well at AL.

While it would be VERY nice to have a talent like Henry, the Dawgs have a young talented running back tandem and have more pressing needs in this recruiting class. Continued depth and talent on OL and defensive back help are the two most immediate needs.

Beanster, I wouldn’t say that Marshall is “riding the pine” behind Gurley. Marshall scored two touchdowns last week. Hard to do that if you are riding the pine. Gurley is getting 10 yards a carry, so he is going to get more touches than Marshall, but there is PLENTY of room for both of them at UGA for the next three years.

@Big Crimson:

Congrats on the Derrick Henry commitment! I hope it will be a good fit for both parties.

You are correct on Derrick Green – Auburn – David Williams – USCe & Alvin Kamara to UGA

Greg Bryant originally tried to commit to UF but for reasons unknown, issues developed between UF coaches and Bryant. Bryant then approached UGA with a commitment but UGA thinking that Derrick Henry’s commit to be solid, turned down Bryant and he eventually committed to Oklahoma.

As soon as Derrick Henry de-committed from UGA, Greg Bryant de-committed from Oklahoma saying he wanted to play closer to home and in the SEC.

UGA is trying to flip Tyren Jones from Alabama, the rumors are not just rumors…. OL Brandon Kublanow a close friend and fellow teammate of Jones at Walton HS is committed to UGA so the connections are tight!

I know that Nick Saban talked to Tyren Jones yesterday, by phone, assuring Jones that he was Saban’s guy (actually Saban’s insecurity in losing Jones after the commitment from Henry today)

UGA would allow Greg Bryant to commit today if the possibility of flipping Jones was not real and still may sign Bryant if unsuccessful in the attempt to flip Jones. Jones already has an Official visit scheduled for UGA. Interesting to see how all of this develops.

I now believe Henry’s statement about Laremy Tunsil to be just an attempt to persuade Tunsil to follow him to Bama. Tunsil was asked about this and Tunsil just laughed it off.

Tunsil favors UGA over Alabama because of the fun family atmosphere and rates both teams as even as a route to the NFL.

Bad decision for him if he is dead se on playing RB, he is big strong and had decent speed but doesnt have explosive cuts. If he wanted to be assured of playing RB UT was the obvious choice, Bama has 3 very good backs ahead of him now, bringing in at least 3 highly rated RB in this class and I am not sure he can beat any of them out. But he sure has some potential at OLB and once Saban convinces him of that he will likely shine.

Henry’s high school coach influenced him to go to Bummer. So what’s he getting out of this? Tunsil has a mind of his own and he just recently said he LOVES UGA and so does his mother. Practically all of Bummer’s OL will be leaving after this year and Henry will be way down the depth chart at RB. Red Shirt likely. This could definitely effect Bo Scarborough who has committed to Bummer from the class of 2014. Expect Dee Hart and several others to transfer out rather than sit on the bench. Kamara is definitely going to UGA.

If I were Bama I would be worried about Tyren jones now that they went out and got Henry and jones has a visit lined up with Uga. If jones was okay red shirting he could be the man at Uga but at Bama who the heck knows.

I’m baffled that All these top runners continue to chose Bama with the heavy backlog of top backs already there. I don’t know what Saban is telling all these backs but it seems to be working. If i were a top back I would go where I had a better chance to be the guy. I know one thing for sure not all of these backs are going to be the star and end up in the nfl.

That kevin taylor the florida commit is the best rb i have seen this yr out of all the top ten ranked rb’s. His cuts are at full speed and he gets those knees up and he is moving. Tyrene Jones is probably the next best or maybe about the same they both are very similar. D. Henry needs to do himself a favor and move to LB and Def. End. I think he will have to play End his hips are to tight for LB bc he is so use to running straight ahead so getting into zones at the second and third level will be a challenge for him but at defensive end he can just get up field. Those hips can be hard to develop at the next level. People act like it is so easy to just change positions. Henry will have trouble playing rb in college but it can be done but he will not produce like most 5star backs do. Henry will have to learn to get up field his first run for a td tonight he just ran around and out run everyone. he ran the opposite direction of the play call he scored which is great but in the sec that is a five yard loss and nick saban has his boot up your arse

Make no mistake he is a stud against those little high school guys. Looks like a linebacker maybe in the SEC. He has no prowess looks for a RB. Good luck to him in any event. Why is Bonner still associated with the University of Alabama?

Is Alabama becoming the next Penn State and believe they are above the law just to win football games?

Are not Bama fans embarrassed by this?

Dawg-Gawn… your a nice enough fellow and I appreciate your enthusiasm. Bonner is a PSA or prospective student athlete. Bama like all other schools can’t comment on PSA’s. UGA was able to comment on Crowell because he was a current player. Rest assured if this kid is proven guilty of the charges that have been filed, it is highly unlikely he will ever wear Crimson and White. Do you really think Saban needs to take a chance on a kid with that kind of baggage? Saban selects elite athletes and often turns some down. This is not Mike Shula’s Tide you’re talking about.

Good grief – just congratulate the kid. And I have lived in both states..Bama and GA…almost exactly the same. But as long as Honey Boo Boo is on the air, nobody should make fun of another state.

Dawg Whisperer,,,,that’s the problem…the attitude of the Dawgs will survive instead of thrive….the very reason D Henry de-committed to UGA and chose AL…a different mind set and the recruits see it…it is long past the time that CMR sees it…hanging on to Willie Martinez too long almost him his job (look @ what he is doing @ AU)….BEING MEDIOCRE AND NOT BEATING TOP TWENTY TEAMS SHOULD NOT BE ACCEPTABLE…CMR needs to take a hard look @ CRG and CWF for their weaknesses in their field…time to win a NC…when that happens, I will stop my ranting!!!

Someone has really been coaching Henry up. He is a much improved RB for sure. Last year, he ran every play straight up and I was not impressed with his RB skills sets. Last night, he ran more with his knees up and was not such an easy target for defenders (although the defenders he played against last night were half his size). Obviously, the kid is very coachable. Based on his new running style last night, I think Henry has a shot at being a RB in the SEC now, although he is not going to stiff arm 300 lb DTs and 240 lbs. like he did 190 lb DTs an 170 lb LBs last night. But he certainly is physically a unique RB. It will be very interesting to watch him develop at Bama over the next few years. No doubt, he redshirts next year at Bama if he plays RB. They will not need him in 2013.

Wow! The SEC is bringing back the running offences of the seventies and eighties. I long for the featured backs of the past. Walker, Dorsett, Smith, Harris, Payton and all other greats. These young running backs are the best athletes on the field and we need to showcase their skills. The quarterback should be the caretaker or manager on the field. Am I the only fool that longs for those days?

Derrick Henry is a running back in college. Somebody said he’s running against small highschool players. They only look small because this kid is so big. When he burst through the line, get out of the way. He reminds me of Hershel Walker.

To you bloggers who hate on the state of Alabama. The only difference between Alabama and Georgia is the spelling. It’s more trailer parks in Georgia than Alabama. Atlanta is a larger version of Birmingham. So stop knocking your cousin Georgia. It only shows how much you belittle yourself.

Really? If it was not for the University of Alabama your state would be Mississippi #2. Would not mean a damn thing to people. As it is, your state is significant for about 6 months (football season) a year where as Atlanta is year round. Life, get one crimson1

I think that Henry is a beast and can win the Heisman at Bama. But he could win the Heisman at UGA or TENN also. He could not go wrong. He would have red shirted for sure at UGA.

Sorry Henry did not committ the second time around to UGa, but this may be a blessing in disguise. Bama already has Tenpenny (#4 running back per Rivals). I don’t have a clue as to why Tyren and Alvin would pick Bama now that these studs are going to Bama together. Wish T & A would form a bond like we saw with Marshall and Gurley in North Carolina…..and come to UGa.

I seriously doubt Henry will ever carry the ball at Bama……in fact, he is not listed as a RB or APB by Rivals. He is listed as the #3 ATHLETE. He is really good and will most likely be a LB or DE, but too big and slow to be a RB. NOTE: UGa is absolutely loaded with LB commits so we may not miss on a stud having to learn a position.

To all of you Bama Aholes. Do UGA fans look like we are losing any sleep? Actually, we don’t need Henry. The state of Georgia produces so many great RB’s (as well as other FB talent) that in the next year, there will be another RB better than Henry from the state of Georgia. The reason you have so many FB fans is because there is nothing else to do in Alabama but watch football and TV reruns. Alabama is so poor in football talent that Saban has to come to Georgia to recruit. Your dumb rednecks need to stay off of our boards unless they have something intelligent to say. Of course, that will never happen because there is no intelligence in Alabama.

For all those that continue to want to compare Georgia’s strength of schedule with Alabama, this is Jeff Sagarin’s ratings after last weekend. By the way, the ratings encompass 246 teams (FBS and FCS) for this rating. UGA gets credit for bumping Missouri’s rating as a highly ranked opponent as does Vanderbilt. So please feel free to reference his ratings to get the full scoop.

Alabama ( 78)
LSU ( 103)
South Carolina ( 58)
Florida ( 32)
Georgia ( 114)
Texas A&M ( 66)
Missouri ( 1)
Mississippi State ( 155)
Auburn ( 4)
Tennessee ( 111)

hope it works out for you both. If anyone can get the “me” out of Henry, it’s Coach Saban. I personally am relieved he isn’t coming to UGA. We just got rid of most of our troubled athletes who put themselves ahead of the program. Would much rather have a player like Alvin or Tyren any and everyday. For those UGA backers that continue to make fun of the state of Alabama’s educational system and the University of Alabama specifically, here is food for thought. I was born in Alabama and raised in Georgia. I graduated from a northern Georgia high school when Georgia ranked 49th in the nation in education. I do love it here but enough with the bashing. Yes, I believe Mississippi ranked 50th during that time. According to the latest rankings of public universities from US NEWS and WORLD REPORT:
#7 Georgia Institute of Technology (awesome)
#17 University of Florida (excellent)
#21 University of Georgia (nice)
#32 University of Alabama (alright)
#51 North Carolina State University (lowest ranked ACC university)
#87 Mississippi State University (lowest ranked SEC university)
I believe this is out of 120+ Public universities. So, how about researching a little before making some truly idiotic remarks. Show some class not your @$$!!!

I can’t believe I agree with….. Tampagator. Much of what I saw last night was a huge kid running threw arm tackles of smaller kids. Though it was obvious he is a one man show on that tram and the blocking was atrocious. Henry’s speed is the one thing that causes pause before dismissing his RB potential. I believe this kid can play several positions at the next level including RB. If he wants to get paid someday, I think he’ll need to find a home at H back or move over to the defense. Though if he continues to improve he could be a young Brandon Jacobs.

Good luck to the mutts today…. I personally hope you lose by 40! Lol Roll Tide!
