Derrick Henry: Alabama beats out Tennessee for ex-UGA commit

Alabama appears to be on the way to another No. 1-ranked recruiting class (AP)

Onetime UGA recruit, Derrick Henry, finally revealed his highly-anticipation on Friday afternoon.

He’s Alabama bound.

The 5-star RB from Florida’s Yulee High School picked Alabama over runner-up Tennessee, followed by UGA.

It was not a surprise that Henry committed to Alabama, as he had been favoring the Crimson Tide since early last summer.

“The way Coach Saban has his program, the way his players are when they come out, it’s amazing,” Henry told al.com. “My position playing running back with Mark (Ingram) and Trent (Richardson) what they did there and what T.J. (Yeldon) has already done there. The way they run their program, it’s like a business-style program. That’s their mentality and how they approach everything, even in the classroom.”

Henry committed to UGA in the summer of 2010, and stayed loyal to the Bulldogs for nearly a year.

Not only did Henry go from being an UGA commit to Alabama, he’s now aggressively recruiting one of UGA’s top remaining OL targets to roll with him to the Crimson Tide, 5-star Laramey Tunsil of Lake City, Fla.

Here was Henry’s first statement on Twitter after committing on Friday:

ROLL TIDE ROLL ! Hope all the TIDE fans tune tonight ! , Now lets get the recruiting started ! TUNSIL next #Leggooooo ! ##RTR!

UGA has 27 commits for its 2013 football recruiting class, but none at running back. The Bulldogs are targeting Norcross High School’s Alvin Kamara, who lists Alabama and UGA as his co-leaders. UGA is also trying to get a shot at Walton High School’s Tyren Jones, who has been committed to Alabama since last February but said he will take other visits, including one to UGA.

How will Henry’s commitment to Alabama will affect Kamara and Jones? Both have said publicly that it would not influence their college choice but it remains to be seen.

The kid’s pretty smart to figure out the difference between the 3rd rate coaching in Athens versus the top-notch program in Tuscaloosa.

Dawg Whisperer,,,,that’s the problem…the attitude of the Dawgs will survive instead of thrive….the very reason D Henry de-committed to UGA and chose AL…a different mind set and the recruits see it…it is long past the time that CMR sees it…hanging on to Willie Martinez too long almost him his job (look @ what he is doing @ AU)….BEING MEDIOCRE AND NOT BEATING TOP TWENTY TEAMS SHOULD NOT BE ACCEPTABLE…CMR needs to take a hard look @ CRG and CWF for their weaknesses in their field…time to win a NC…when that happens, I will stop my ranting!!!

Someone has really been coaching Henry up. He is a much improved RB for sure. Last year, he ran every play straight up and I was not impressed with his RB skills sets. Last night, he ran more with his knees up and was not such an easy target for defenders (although the defenders he played against last night were half his size). Obviously, the kid is very coachable. Based on his new running style last night, I think Henry has a shot at being a RB in the SEC now, although he is not going to stiff arm 300 lb DTs and 240 lbs. like he did 190 lb DTs an 170 lb LBs last night. But he certainly is physically a unique RB. It will be very interesting to watch him develop at Bama over the next few years. No doubt, he redshirts next year at Bama if he plays RB. They will not need him in 2013.

Wow! The SEC is bringing back the running offences of the seventies and eighties. I long for the featured backs of the past. Walker, Dorsett, Smith, Harris, Payton and all other greats. These young running backs are the best athletes on the field and we need to showcase their skills. The quarterback should be the caretaker or manager on the field. Am I the only fool that longs for those days?

He will play next year probably like Drake has played. In the 4th quarter when the game is out of hand. Or he could share the job with Yeldon.

This is awesome news for UGA! We don’t need an OLB playing RB… this will alter the recruiting for Kamara (much better RB than Henry) and Jones. Thank you Derrick!

Derrick Henry is a running back in college. Somebody said he’s running against small highschool players. They only look small because this kid is so big. When he burst through the line, get out of the way. He reminds me of Hershel Walker.

To you bloggers who hate on the state of Alabama. The only difference between Alabama and Georgia is the spelling. It’s more trailer parks in Georgia than Alabama. Atlanta is a larger version of Birmingham. So stop knocking your cousin Georgia. It only shows how much you belittle yourself.

Would have sat for at least 2 years at UGA and will that long at Bama. UT would have been the better choice if the kid wants to play right away.

Really? If it was not for the University of Alabama your state would be Mississippi #2. Would not mean a damn thing to people. As it is, your state is significant for about 6 months (football season) a year where as Atlanta is year round. Life, get one crimson1

I think that Henry is a beast and can win the Heisman at Bama. But he could win the Heisman at UGA or TENN also. He could not go wrong. He would have red shirted for sure at UGA.

Sorry Henry did not committ the second time around to UGa, but this may be a blessing in disguise. Bama already has Tenpenny (#4 running back per Rivals). I don’t have a clue as to why Tyren and Alvin would pick Bama now that these studs are going to Bama together. Wish T & A would form a bond like we saw with Marshall and Gurley in North Carolina…..and come to UGa.

I seriously doubt Henry will ever carry the ball at Bama……in fact, he is not listed as a RB or APB by Rivals. He is listed as the #3 ATHLETE. He is really good and will most likely be a LB or DE, but too big and slow to be a RB. NOTE: UGa is absolutely loaded with LB commits so we may not miss on a stud having to learn a position.

To all of you Bama Aholes. Do UGA fans look like we are losing any sleep? Actually, we don’t need Henry. The state of Georgia produces so many great RB’s (as well as other FB talent) that in the next year, there will be another RB better than Henry from the state of Georgia. The reason you have so many FB fans is because there is nothing else to do in Alabama but watch football and TV reruns. Alabama is so poor in football talent that Saban has to come to Georgia to recruit. Your dumb rednecks need to stay off of our boards unless they have something intelligent to say. Of course, that will never happen because there is no intelligence in Alabama.

For all those that continue to want to compare Georgia’s strength of schedule with Alabama, this is Jeff Sagarin’s ratings after last weekend. By the way, the ratings encompass 246 teams (FBS and FCS) for this rating. UGA gets credit for bumping Missouri’s rating as a highly ranked opponent as does Vanderbilt. So please feel free to reference his ratings to get the full scoop.

Alabama ( 78)
LSU ( 103)
South Carolina ( 58)
Florida ( 32)
Georgia ( 114)
Texas A&M ( 66)
Missouri ( 1)
Mississippi State ( 155)
Auburn ( 4)
Tennessee ( 111)
Mississippi ( 113)
Vanderbilt ( 6)
Arkansas ( 46)
Kentucky ( 26)

Bama
hope it works out for you both. If anyone can get the “me” out of Henry, it’s Coach Saban. I personally am relieved he isn’t coming to UGA. We just got rid of most of our troubled athletes who put themselves ahead of the program. Would much rather have a player like Alvin or Tyren any and everyday. That being said, good luck on the field today…

For those UGA backers that continue to make fun of the state of Alabama’s educational system and the University of Alabama specifically, here is food for thought. I was born in Alabama and raised in Georgia. I graduated from a northern Georgia high school when Georgia ranked 49th in the nation in education. I do love it here but enough with the bashing. Yes, I believe Mississippi ranked 50th during that time. According to the latest rankings of public universities from US NEWS and WORLD REPORT:
#7 Georgia Institute of Technology (awesome)
#17 University of Florida (excellent)
#21 University of Georgia (nice)
#32 University of Alabama (alright)
#51 North Carolina State University (lowest ranked ACC university)
#87 Mississippi State University (lowest ranked SEC university)
I believe this is out of 120+ Public universities. So, how about researching a little before making some truly idiotic remarks. Show some class not your @$$!!!

I can’t believe I agree with….. Tampagator. Much of what I saw last night was a huge kid running threw arm tackles of smaller kids. Though it was obvious he is a one man show on that tram and the blocking was atrocious. Henry’s speed is the one thing that causes pause before dismissing his RB potential. I believe this kid can play several positions at the next level including RB. If he wants to get paid someday, I think he’ll need to find a home at H back or move over to the defense. Though if he continues to improve he could be a young Brandon Jacobs.

Good luck to the mutts today…. I personally hope you lose by 40! Lol Roll Tide!

Let all go to Bama…they’ll end up with 8 scholarship RBs on their squad next year. But Saban will force someone off the roster at some point, after he figures out which ones he wants to keep..eventually screwing 2 yrs of eligibility for the kids..due to transfer requirements. Ahh..the ethics of Bama football.
