Derrick Henry: Alabama beats out Tennessee for ex-UGA commit

Alabama appears to be on the way to another No. 1-ranked recruiting class (AP)

Alabama appears to be on the way to another No. 1-ranked recruiting class (AP)

Onetime UGA recruit, Derrick Henry, finally revealed his highly-anticipation on Friday afternoon.

He’s Alabama bound.

The 5-star RB from Florida’s Yulee High School picked Alabama over runner-up Tennessee, followed by UGA.

It was not a surprise that Henry committed to Alabama, as he had been favoring the Crimson Tide since early last summer.

“The way Coach Saban has his program, the way his players are when they come out, it’s amazing,” Henry told al.com. “My position playing running back with Mark (Ingram) and Trent (Richardson) what they did there and what T.J. (Yeldon) has already done there. The way they run their program, it’s like a business-style program. That’s their mentality and how they approach everything, even in the classroom.”

Henry committed to UGA in the summer of 2010, and stayed loyal to the Bulldogs for nearly a year.

Not only did Henry go from being an UGA commit to Alabama, he’s now aggressively recruiting one of UGA’s top remaining OL targets to roll with him to the Crimson Tide, 5-star Laramey Tunsil of Lake City, Fla.

Here was Henry’s first statement on Twitter after committing on Friday:

ROLL TIDE ROLL ! Hope all the TIDE fans tune tonight ! , Now lets get the recruiting started ! TUNSIL next #Leggooooo ! ##RTR!

UGA has 27 commits for its 2013 football recruiting class, but none at running back. The Bulldogs are targeting Norcross High School’s Alvin Kamara, who lists Alabama and UGA as his co-leaders. UGA is also trying to get a shot at Walton High School’s Tyren Jones, who has been committed to Alabama since last February but said he will take other visits, including one to UGA.

How will Henry’s commitment to Alabama will affect Kamara and Jones? Both have said publicly that it would not influence their college choice but it remains to be seen.

This Henry kid is a beast, and has good speed, but watching the film he doesn’t look he’s gonna break ten tackles a game, but obvious huge upside. Now I think Alvin Kamara would be a good complement to our current backs. This kid has pretty amazing quickness shooting through gaps.Get him and we have a triple threat. GO DAWGS !!

It’s all relevant…Time for him to buckle down on his grades and studies and finish out high school. Heck have a little fun while you’re at it Derrick.

Welcome to the Capstone ( once you have signed your LOI and passed the entrance exams)!!!

It will interesting to see how his skills translate to the college game. If he remains at RB. Would love to have seen him at UGA. I thought Tenn. might have a shot but guys at ESPN have been saying Alabama for a while.

He’s a good one.

Should get some movement with the other RBs now that Henry has made his choice.

RJ — it can be done @ 6′3″ — if he’s truly that tall.
Jacobs has been mentioned.
Robert Smith, Marcus Allen, O.J. Simpson(yes him), Eddie George, Franco Harris….

I hope it works him as he has insisted that he’s playing running back at Alabama. His frame just does not look like he can take the pounding in the SEC..But if nobody can catch him he wont have that problem.

UGA won`t be hurt by Henry choosing Alabama. They will sign one or two more RB this year to compliment what is all ready there.

It doesn’t hurt UGA, but is a blow to Tennessee. They need a couple of “stars” to get back in the SEC mix. But that said, welcome to the Crimson Machine, Derrick.

Kamara is not a SEC back and from what I’ve seen may be a prima donna like Crowell. T. Jones is fast but would not dislodge the two backs we got this year. My advice is to keep going back to North Carolina. Their best prospects want to play in the SEC and Georgai is their choice.

Bama currently have two 5* and one 4* freshmen RBs on the roster with three highly rated 4* RBs commited and one 5* RB commited fo 2014. Bama will be known as TRANSFER U. Note, Rivals have Henry as a 4* Athlete not RB and thats how Saban gonna use him.

There is nothing else to do in Alabama but follow college football blogs and worship 17 year olds. Congrats on getting your RB, but I doubt he becomes anything but a goal line and short yard back with the other backs you have. Henry should’ve went to UT where he will actually make an impact.

@Big Crimson:

Congrats on the Derrick Henry commitment! I hope it will be a good fit for both parties.

You are correct on Derrick Green – Auburn – David Williams – USCe & Alvin Kamara to UGA

Greg Bryant originally tried to commit to UF but for reasons unknown, issues developed between UF coaches and Bryant. Bryant then approached UGA with a commitment but UGA thinking that Derrick Henry’s commit to be solid, turned down Bryant and he eventually committed to Oklahoma.

As soon as Derrick Henry de-committed from UGA, Greg Bryant de-committed from Oklahoma saying he wanted to play closer to home and in the SEC.

UGA is trying to flip Tyren Jones from Alabama, the rumors are not just rumors…. OL Brandon Kublanow a close friend and fellow teammate of Jones at Walton HS is committed to UGA so the connections are tight!

I know that Nick Saban talked to Tyren Jones yesterday, by phone, assuring Jones that he was Saban’s guy (actually Saban’s insecurity in losing Jones after the commitment from Henry today)

UGA would allow Greg Bryant to commit today if the possibility of flipping Jones was not real and still may sign Bryant if unsuccessful in the attempt to flip Jones. Jones already has an Official visit scheduled for UGA. Interesting to see how all of this develops.

I now believe Henry’s statement about Laremy Tunsil to be just an attempt to persuade Tunsil to follow him to Bama. Tunsil was asked about this and Tunsil just laughed it off.

Tunsil favors UGA over Alabama because of the fun family atmosphere and rates both teams as even as a route to the NFL.

Bad decision for him if he is dead se on playing RB, he is big strong and had decent speed but doesnt have explosive cuts. If he wanted to be assured of playing RB UT was the obvious choice, Bama has 3 very good backs ahead of him now, bringing in at least 3 highly rated RB in this class and I am not sure he can beat any of them out. But he sure has some potential at OLB and once Saban convinces him of that he will likely shine.

Henry’s high school coach influenced him to go to Bummer. So what’s he getting out of this? Tunsil has a mind of his own and he just recently said he LOVES UGA and so does his mother. Practically all of Bummer’s OL will be leaving after this year and Henry will be way down the depth chart at RB. Red Shirt likely. This could definitely effect Bo Scarborough who has committed to Bummer from the class of 2014. Expect Dee Hart and several others to transfer out rather than sit on the bench. Kamara is definitely going to UGA.

Saban will make that dude a 3-4 OLB or size him up to be a DE…really runs to upright and wouldnt last too long as a full time running back in the SEC…maybe a full back. UGA would be best to not offer another RB this year and just go get another OL…something we always need!!!

Welcome to Atlanta and college football. As far as bama boys and their decisions to run those sucks non stop. No tide fan has anything at all of worth in their lifes other than bama football. This is not a joke or a jab it is 100% the truth. I believe Tunsil will join Henry at Bama….for nearly the same reasons Henry mentioned in the article. Henry is playing on TV tonight for Yulee againt Florida RB commit, Fred Taylor, from Belle Glades. My bet….Taylor outperfoms him in the game….and he will in college as well….at running back for Florida….while Henry plays TE or OLB at Bama after redshirting and seeing he will not see the field as a RB at Bama.

Henry…..5 carries and about 12 yards so far. Kelvin Taylor…..two carries for over 40 yards already. One looks like a big time RB and the other does not. Hint….the last name of the one who does….does not begin with a H.

I read a report on rivals today and they are skeptical that Henry will pan out as top sec back. And like someone on here said earlier they actually have him rated as an athlete and not as a running back.

If I were Bama I would be worried about Tyren jones now that they went out and got Henry and jones has a visit lined up with Uga. If jones was okay red shirting he could be the man at Uga but at Bama who the heck knows.

I’m baffled that All these top runners continue to chose Bama with the heavy backlog of top backs already there. I don’t know what Saban is telling all these backs but it seems to be working. If i were a top back I would go where I had a better chance to be the guy. I know one thing for sure not all of these backs are going to be the star and end up in the nfl.

That kevin taylor the florida commit is the best rb i have seen this yr out of all the top ten ranked rb’s. His cuts are at full speed and he gets those knees up and he is moving. Tyrene Jones is probably the next best or maybe about the same they both are very similar. D. Henry needs to do himself a favor and move to LB and Def. End. I think he will have to play End his hips are to tight for LB bc he is so use to running straight ahead so getting into zones at the second and third level will be a challenge for him but at defensive end he can just get up field. Those hips can be hard to develop at the next level. People act like it is so easy to just change positions. Henry will have trouble playing rb in college but it can be done but he will not produce like most 5star backs do. Henry will have to learn to get up field his first run for a td tonight he just ran around and out run everyone. he ran the opposite direction of the play call he scored which is great but in the sec that is a five yard loss and nick saban has his boot up your arse
