Derrick Henry: UGA, Alabama or Tennessee for 5-star RB?

Will UGA land the commitment of 5-star RB Derrick Henry again?

The Bulldogs are listed as one of the three finalists for Henry, along with Alabama and Tennessee.

Henry will finally make his highly-anticipated decision at 3 p.m. Friday at Florida’s Yulee High School, unless he changes the date again.

You know the story on Derrick Henry: He committed to UGA two summers ago, and remained pledged to the Bulldogs for nearly a year, before opening up things in June.

Could UGA land Henry again? After all, another UGA commit for 2013, WR Tramel Terry, committed, de-committed, and recommitted to UGA. But it seems far less likely with Henry, especially since he hasn’t visited UGA since the summer.

Who will get Henry? Alabama was almost everybody’s pick but now Tennessee appears to be making a strong push. Henry visited Tennessee last week.

Bama, Vols or UGA? (247sports)

Yulee coach Bobby Ramsay also shot down the notion that Henry – who is 6-foot-3 and 243 pounds – will play anything but running back in college, according to the Florida Times-Union:

“I think Derrick’s always looked ahead and never looked back and rested on what he’s done,” Ramsay said. “When people say that he’s not a college running back, I think he focuses on his naysayers. He’s always got something to prove.

“I think kids like Derrick and [Tim] Tebow are always going to come along, Cameron Newton, too, Magic Johnson, a 6-9 point guard, there’s always a somatotype for a position, a certain height, a certain weight. Guys come along outside the box of that position and play it well. It’s up to the coaches to fit those guys in.”

Somatotype? What’s your Derrick Henry prediction? Please post below.

Enjoy playing OLB/DE at Bama Derrick

We have true running backs now in Gurley and Marshall and Malcome.

Just another recruit the Dawgs missed the boat on… maybe they will get lucky and the SEC won’t schedule them to play Bama for the next four years also.

Originally I thought losing the commitment wasn’t that big of a deal since he’d likely be a big, upright runner that can’t quite make the transition to college RB and would be better off at LB. After reading about his 502 yard effort last week, my mind may have been changed. Regardless, with the young talent we have right now, it’s not what I’d characterize as a major position of need.

Henry will be playing Fullback in College. Georgia has three very good fullbacks . Hicks and Ogletree made Henry a necessary player to recruit but when a walk-on named Hall came into the picture and is listed as first on the depth charts , Henry had no choice but to look elsewhere. Henry doesn’t care where he plays football as long as he is playing as a Freshman. At Georgia I doubt, with Hall a Red shirt Freshman and Hicks a true Freshman , that Henry would not be Red Shirted at Georgia.
Actually I think Alabama could use one more Fullback but if Henry wants to be guaranteed playing time as a Freshmen he will go to Tennessee. Henry hasn’t showed any loyalty to any one school so my guess is he will pick Tennessee. It’s all about playing time as a Freshman.

My opinion of Henry and his abilities changed after watching him compete out in Oregon this summer. In my opinion Henry is a truly gifted athlete that can play tailback in college if that is the position he chooses to stick with. If he selects a school this far away from NSD, then I think it is Bama. If he selects or reselects closer to NSD, then I think he picks Tennessee. His choice of Alabama will be stictly based on his desire to play for a team that has already won a championship, if he goes with Tennessee it will be strictly based on his desire to play immediately. Neither UGA or Alabama can gurantee immediate playing time. I do think he would be a beast on defense and those numbers from last Friday suggest he was not playing against a legit team.

I agree , everybody probably has a field day against the team he played against. He is still in high school but by the time he is finished in College he will probably realize that most running backs only last 3 to 6 years in the Pro’s where a linebacker could be there 15 years.
I think Richt and Saban want him on defense but Tennessee is desperate to get a running back as talented as he is , and will let him chose.

Big Crimson 75….. Yeldon is not a true RB. Surprised to read that. The kid looks like a legit RB to me. Why do you say he is not? Also if Henry can play OLB, he can be more of an impact player in the NFL more so than at RB. It has truly become a pass to set up the run league.

What’s up? My point is that Henry is thinking heis a college running back. He will not play that at Bama where he is going to attend college.

How will that sit with him?

Not sure honestly if I want him instead of Gurley, Marshall and Malcome and if we can get Kamara.

We are doing ok at RB and OL.-The strengths of our team next year.

He’s already 6-foot-3 and 243 pounds. As his body matures, he’ll put on “man” weight. He could wind up 6-foot-4 and 275-280 pounds. That’s DE range.

Nowadays, most elite level kids go where than can get on the field as quickly as possible. (See Patterson at UT). Gurley and Marshall are exceptions as rarely do the top two players at the same position go to the same school in the same year. With that I think Henry goes to UT as they need a big time RB. Since he is probably not signing with the Dawgs, I’d like to see him sign with someone in the Mountain West(do they still exist), same with Foster, Nkemdiche, and others, LOL!

My guess is if Henry is stuck on running back as he appears to be and thinks he’s a 3 year college player, he’ll commit to Tennessee where he will most likely be the #1 running back as a freshman. He’s not likely to beat out Lacy (assuming he comes back for his senior year) and Yeldon (and maybe not Drake, Hart, Fowler, Jones, Tenpenny, etc.) at Alabama or Gurley and Marshall at Georgia. The issue with Tennessee is that if they lose 5-6 games, and they have a brutal October schedule, Dooley will probably be gone. But if that happens, Henry can always decommit again.

While running back is still a glamour profession in college, for a guy with Henry’s size and athleticism, even if he could play either at a high level he would likely make more money in the NFL and have a longer career playing outside linebacker in a 3-4 or DE in a 4-3 instead of running back. John Abraham was a freak athlete in high school, set the South Carolina state record in the 200 yard dash which I heard recently still holds. He’s still starting in the NFL at age 34 while most running backs are washed up by 30 or earlier.

I know stranger things have happened, but I would be surprised if he went to Bama or UGA with the depth at RB. UT seems like a better fit. He’s going to be a load to take down if he does stay at the RB position.

I have never seen the kid play but I wonder if he will end up like Richard Samuel? A five star stud in high school who never really could get it going at any position. Samuel is one heck of a teammate and has made great sacrifices for his team but he never really lived up to the billing. Not sure if he would have made it at linebacker either but I guess he didn’t get the time he needed at that position. Henry could wind up weighing 270 lbs after a year or two in a college weight training program. I’m skeptical of him leaving college as a tailback when all is said and done.

I don’t know the quality of competition Henry plays in Fl, but I do know his string of 100 yard games would have come to an end against Buford last year if Buford hadn’t called the dogs off and LET him have them. Could have been part of the arrangement of his team playing Buford. Not real fast, but real big for a RB, and the only place he has a real chance of playing RB is UT, because they don’t have one.

I think he’ll go to Tennessee. We have Lacy for another year, Dee Hart, and the true frosh Yeldon. Georgia has two true freshmen in Gurley and Marshal, plus Ken Malcolm. Tennessee has the need for him now and he’ll start immedietly, so I feel as if he’ll be going to Ole Rocky Top Tennessee. Best of luck wherever he goes.

At Bama the best players will play regardless of the position. I do think he fits the Hback position immediately in which Bama is in need of. They have to play with a 4 or 5th yr walk on because they dont have someone that can do that now. My guess is if he goes to Bama he will play both RB and HB. If he goes to UT he may play immediately but will be beat the hell out of by yr 3. Only so many years in running back carreer.

On that 500+ yard performance; dude was playing against waaayyyy less talent. It’s still impressive though. He is going to be too big to play the tailback postition when its all said and done. I think he goes to UT where he will get immediate playing time.

Good luck to D.Henry where ever he decides to go. DAWGS are in running for Greg Bryant considered by some to be the best back in Fla better than Henry, also Kamara, current bama commit Jones, but DAWG fans are forgetting about Derrick Green out Richmond VA, who some are considering the best back in the nation so if we lose out on Henry, we still have time to go get another great back, couldn’t go wrong with any of these guys.

let him go. we dont need him we got two great back that will be around for at least 3 more years. he back out and went away now its time for us to do the same. we will be fine. specially as long as he was committed to the Dawgs. either you get on the wagon and stay on or the wagon rides with you over you and threw you. thats how i feel about him.

Hey Moobs Johnson,
Know who the victim of weak scheduling will be this year? Not the Dawgs. Try Alabama. With Auburn and Arkansas sucking it up in the West, Bama also doesnt play any of the top 3 from the East. Thus let them lose to LSU (on the road this year) and there won’t be any backing into the national championship game. Notre Dame took care of that last week when they beat Michigan.

I’d like to see him come to UGA, but it depends on where his mind is. If he wants to play right away, he will pick UT. UGA has a bit more of a crowded backfield than Bama right now. That may work to their favor though. He may relish the competition. Gurley and Marshall came to UGA even though Crowell and Malcome were still there as well as Samuel.

I wonder how many of these high school coaches get paid, eventually, by these phenoms once they make it big. I’ll bet some of these coaches actually try to get something in writing on the very day these kids turn 18. Some of them speak like they are not just complimenting the kids but selling them like a product, much like slimy agents do.

I believe that we will go to Tennessee after there poor showing with the RB’s they have on their current roster. UGA is loaded with young backs as is Bama. It will be interesting watching him play against UF’s 2013 RB Kelvin Taylor on ESPNU this Friday night.
