Brendan Langley: UGA back in race for one of state’s top DB recruits (UPDATED)

UGA is back in the sweepstakes for DB Brendan Langley, who once listed the Bulldogs and Alabama as his co-leaders before eventually committing to South Carolina last month

UGA is back in the sweepstakes for DB Brendan Langley, who once listed the Bulldogs and Alabama as his co-leaders before eventually committing to South Carolina last month

A new recruiting sales pitch by UGA has gotten the Bulldogs back into the running for one of the state’s top defensive backs.

UGA has told Brendan Langley, a 4-star defensive back from Kell High School, that he can play both football and basketball in college.

Langley committed to South Carolina over UGA, among other schools, last month.

“Yes, the basketball opportunity really helps out Georgia — that’s the only reason they’re back in it at all,” Langley told the AJC. “If it weren’t for the basketball, I don’t think I’d be looking at them like this. I mean, I’m committed to South Carolina. But Georgia has something just as good to offer. I definitely want to look into it.”

This past weekend, Langley made an unofficial visit to UGA for the Vanderbilt game. Before the football game, Langley said he met with UGA basketball coach Mark Fox for about 10 minutes to discuss the possibility of him joining the team as a point guard.

“I think Georgia is very sincere about it,” Langley said. “Coach Fox said that he would love to have me. I thought it was all pretty cool.”

At 6-foot-1 and 190 pounds, Langley has the size and athleticism that UGA defensive coordinator Todd Grantham covets at cornerback. UGA has 28 commitments for 2013, including three projected to play at cornerback. The position is a priority with the team’s lack of depth after this season.

Despite Langley’s commitment to South Carolina, Grantham hasn’t given up on recruiting him. The two-sport idea gave UGA an opening.

“I told Coach Grantham about basketball, and the next day Coach Fox called me,” Langley said. “I also expressed it to South Carolina the same way I did to Georgia. But South Carolina still hasn’t gotten back to me about it.”

How good is Langley in basketball? He played on the Kell varsity for five games last year at power forward before leaving the team with an ankle injury in December and not returning, according to his coach.

Langley told the AJC that he remains 100-percent committed to South Carolina, but likes UGA enough that he “will definitely” take an official visit with the Bulldogs. He may also take recruiting trips to Florida, Tennessee and UCLA.

Langley considered returning to UGA this weekend for the Tennessee game but will attend Kell’s homecoming festivities instead. He plans to take an official visit to South Carolina the following week when the Gamecocks play host to UGA.

Sure, Mountain Dawg – that’s why he gave up hoops to focus on football. It’s right there in the article, all you have to do is read it. For the record, this kid is as good as anybody UGA’s recruited at CB this year. Maybe better. Glad to see the Dawgs are back in it. Would be a great get.

South Carolina hasn’t won anything in 120 years of football. No conference titles, no national championships. Spurrier hasn’t won anything in over 12 years and he won’t this year.

Maybe he can commit and Georgia can then say “no, thanks” like they did with Kelsey Griffin. That’s how homegrown 4 stars are treated by the University of Georgia. Tell ‘em anything to get them interested, right? Brendan’s clearly not a basketball prospect, but Grantham can tell Mark Fox what to do (Grantham: “Call this kid. Now. Even though he hasn’t played round ball in years. And even though there’s no video” Fox: OK”) No UGA fan on this board thinks he will actually play hoops; most of you are just interested in the ploy. Some real integrity on display here. Not.

I remember during the recruiting of Chaz Elder, a lot of the Bulldog fans whined about how the Cocks were not being truthful to Chaz. Grantham wanted him as a Safety, while Ellis Johnson and Lorenzo Ward told him he could play Corner – since that was Elder’s preferred position. “What little integrity,” whined the UGA partisans. “Everyone can see that he’s clearly a Safety. Georgia is much more honorable in its recruiting.” Take a look in the mirror folks. This is a cheap ploy – making this kid think he can be a two sport star. Even though you’re already technically “oversigning” since you have 27 commitments but the class limit is supposed to be 25. Sure, some will count to last year and enroll early, and you’ll make it all legal. Just like everyone else did. But then you guys were so moral and upright in your anti-oversigning zealotry. CMR was the leading anti-oversigner of the South. Until it no longer suited your purposes. Situational ethics.

Nothing I said had anything to do with the game coming up the Saturday after next. And funny, you had nothing of substance to say in reply. But, by all means, keep talking. You guys were just as confident last year. And the year before. Said the same things … the same jokes … the same insults … last year. And the year before.

That being said, the thing I hate most about UGA is that you use the tune of “John Brown’s Body” for your fight song “Glory, Glory Georgia.” How our ancestors would roll in their graves. Enemy troops literally destroyed our states singing that tune – and you adopted it as a fight song. Well, I guess most of y’all aren’t really from Georgia anyway. You probably don’t even know. Shameful.

Thos statement jumped out at me. ” I mean, I’m committed to South Carolina. But Georgia has something just as good to offer.”

Brandon UGA has something better to offer, just compare 4 years in Athens to 4 yesrs in Columbia, just compare the quality of education at UGA compared to SC, just compare the football history at UGA to SC. The way everyone sees it is UGA is superior to SC in all of the ways that matter when one is considering the 2 Universities.

Brendan,
Why would you go out of state and play on a “neighbor’s” team. Defend your home state and play for Tech or UGa! Also, I’m sure SC will panic and let you play basketball, but don’t forget who gave you the 2-sport opportunity first.

Cock of Gibraltar, would you like an actual, adult discussion about this, or do you just want to deal in cheap accusations?

1. What is oversigning? To me(and anyone else I’ve actually discussed it with), oversigning isn’t about a specific number(25), but rather, it’s about taking more commits in a recruiting class than you have open spots on the roster. For instance, lets say you’ve just recruited like a beast for 5 years, redshirted a ton of kids, no one left, and you only have a SINGLE senior leaving the program, so you have 1 open scholarship. Oversigning would be taking 2 kids on NSD, and either forcing out your worst player currently on the 85, or telling the your no. 2 recruit that he doesn’t actually have a spot, and he should maybe greyshirt, etc. Agreed? That is what is unethical.

Conversely, if a school has had a ton of NATURAL attrition(kids who weren’t forced out, but rather got legitimately hurt, wanted to leave on their own terms, or did something behavior wise that truly warranted a dismissal) and say has…only 50 kids on scholly. Why would it be unethical to take 26(or 30, or 35–if they can back count them) in that situation? Who’s being forced out? Who’s being lied to? WHo’s being sent elsewhere on NSD(as happened, very publicly, to a variety of players the past few years). NO ONE. In this situation, UGA is not breaking the rules, nor are they being unethical.

When you say that “we made it all legal, just like the other schools”, the difference is that we made it “legal” without breaking either the letter or the spirit of the rules, and we also did it without hurting anyone. Ready to admit that you either didn’t know what you’re talking about, or just wanted to spew cheap garbage(like the avg USC fan)?

2. The basketball pitch—we’ve used it before, and we honor it. No one expects Langley to “star” in basketball, but he’ll be given a legitimate chance to play basketball. We need to do what we can do to get this kid back, because he’s very good. No one is lying to him. We’re appealing to his desire, for sure, but that’s what recruiting is. We’re prepared to back up what we’re offering, and I dare you to prove where we aren’t.

Kelsey Griffin remains wanted by UGA, and his father apologized to UGA about the remarks he made. Kelsey needs to take care of a test score before UGA can take him, and did not contact UGA before committing. Very good player, hope he takes care of business and ends up at UGA.

Typical of an uniformed troll that opens his mouth about another team’s recruiting of a player and hasn’t got one substantial fact to back up the junk you are typing. Nobody, not anybody on this blog, or any other troll or fan of UGA has the story yet, on why Kelsey Griffin, was not accepted at UGA. As is typical of a jealous fan of another team, you come onto a blog and try to stir the pot, and end up showing your ignorance. If we are going to use rumors and half truths like you, the average troll, let me throw in one then. He didn’t want to go to S.C. as his first choice because they didn’t offer him a good enough hotel room to stay at. That makes about as much sense as what you are saying, but S.C. has a proven history in that, where as UGA doesn’t have a proven history for what you say. I am sure S.C. has a newspaper up there that you could follow, that has lots of pictures and not too many words over 4 lettters that you could read.

Hey Crock:
Go back to your cage Lamecock. A chicken as a mascot, really, really! The fight song we use, Auburn uses and other schools is actually called the Battle Hymn. It is also a song that is song in church on Sunday mornings, not just here in the South, but, in the rest of churchs across this great nation. Your state is the one still flying the stars and bars! Usc has nothing to hang its hat on accept baseball which you have a great team. We will see what happens in two weeks. Your school has a lot of wins to make up and championships before you can ever hope to catch a glimpse of UGA. Glory Glory to ole Georgia!

I wish folks would get of this “Kelsey” issue. If UGa made a mistake or rudely pulled his scholarship offer then Kelsey’s coach would have blasted UGa (like we’ve seen with SC and Bama screw-ups). It is obvious that UGa didn’t make a mistake, but they can’t say anything due to NCAA rules…..and it pains me to defend UGa!

Good approach by UGA – but I bet the kid goes to USCe.

USCe is the better football program (based on beating UGA 2 years in a row) and has the better head football coach. If Spurrier was coaching UGA – the dogs would have won a more SEC East titles than Richt and my guess is a national title or two. What Spurrier is accomplishing at USCe is pretty amazing when you look at USCe’s football past.

Well stated Coach P and RedandBlackDawg! The more people talk about oversiging the more obvious it is that they don’t really know what that means! Every team has an 85 scholarship player limit. People think you don’t oversign if you take 25 a year, but they don’t do the math apparently! The 85 limit and 25 limit assumes that there will be natural attrition like graduation, redshirts, medical hardships, transfers, dismissals, etc. It is well documented that UGA has had a lot of attrition over the last couple of years and therefore have extra scholarships available that they would not normally have. There is nothing illegal or even unethical about UGA being able to bring in up to 8 in January and then sign 25 in February. Haters are gonna hate, but at least come with the facts on your side if are going to post repeatedly about things you know nothing about.

GT Bob—Excellent points. Based on the last 2 )2010 and 2011) years, USCe is the better football program! Of course, based on the last 2 years, UF is a 5.5 loss a year program, and not even in the upper half of the SEC.

Dienlafin—once again, hperbole reigns supreme over facts. USC is a bit thin with talented DB’s, the opposite of “loaded.”

Langley is not what UGA needs. Quit wasting time on a guy that does not want to go to UGA. Also, Langley is not a polished DB – weak in coverage. Go after Jalen Ramsey (from Tenn) a 5 star DB, 6′1″ runs a 4.5 40 and a polished cover corner. Currently he is a commit to Lame Kitten but he wants to get back south and recently visited Florida. Wake up Grantham – Jalen Ramsey is what you need.

@ Fla-ri-dah:

You contribute a lot of good and supportive DAWG info on here so be careful when you start pushing on CMR and Staff to back off or go after certain players. Although a number of others on here are saying they watched Langley in action and were critical of his play you need to keep in mind that Spurrier is a pretty good judge of recruits and he offered him and surely somebody saw a lot of talent or potential by his being rated a 4-star. CMR and staff probably are somewhat familiar with most 3, 4 and 5 star players in our part of the country and some outside our region. I trust the judgement of the $3 million dollar man/CMR so don’t put too much emphasis on what you read on here because a LARGE portion of them are TROLLS that wish nothing but the WORST for DAWGNATION
