Wait a minute … Kelsey Griffin “is NOT” committed to UGA, per coach

How many more commits will UGA try to get for the 2013 class after landing DT Kelsey Griffin? (AJC)

The coach of 4-star DT Kelsey Griffin told the AJC he "was NOT committed" to UGA on Friday evening (AJC)

Kelsey Griffin’s recruiting took a strange twist on Friday.

In the morning, the 4-star defensive tackle from Mill Creek High School committed to UGA in front of TV cameras.

On Friday evening, Griffin’s high school coach told the AJC that he was no longer committed to UGA.

Here’s what Mill Creek’s Shannon Jarvis told the AJC via text message:

“We are about to load our buses for tonight’s game so I will not be able to call. Please know that Kelsey is NOT committed to UGA right now. I know this may sound crazy, but it is the facts.”

With Friday’s kickoff against Peachtree Ridge fast approaching, Jarvis did not respond another text message asking for further clarification — Did Kelsey Griffin commit to UGA and have a change of heart? Or did Griffin publicly pledge to UGA and later find out that it was rejected by the Bulldogs?

UGA cannot comment on prospective student-athletes, and Griffin was not available for comment on early Friday evening.

Earlier on Friday morning, Griffin sat with his parents at an impromptu press conference at Mill Creek and told reporters from ESPN, Scout and Rivals that he had committed to UGA. It was all captured on video.

“I just decided to commit there; It had been weighing on my heart to commit to the place where I want to be the most … .and it happened to be the University of Georgia,” Griffin told Scout’s Kristen Ledlow on Friday morning.

At the time, it was huge news for UGA, as Griffin is one of the state’s top remaining uncommitted prospects. The 6-foot-1, 290-pounder is ranked as a consensus 4-star recruit and had narrowed down to UGA and South Carolina.

Griffin would’ve been commitment No. 29 for UGA’s 2013 recruiting class – if you’re counting JC offensive lineman Trenton Brown, who is still officially committed to the Bulldogs but lists Florida as his leader. ESPN and 247 sports have already removed Brown from its list of UGA commits, and they both have the Bulldogs at 28.

Now, after the news about Griffin’s de-commitment on early Friday evening, UGA could be down to 27.

The only explanation for this is that the UGA coaches did not accept his commitment. No way the kid changed his mind.

I think the kid realized that he would have to spend at least 3 years in a city that smells like pickled pig feet, pork rinds, and mountain mash. That would be enough to make me change my mind too.

Kelsey’s commitment is just bad timing for UGA at the moment. One of UGA’s big priorities is GA native JUCO Toby Johnson DT 6′ 4″ 305lbs Hutchinson Community College, Kansas is taking an official visit to Oklahoma this Saturday. UGA needs this recruit as insurance, in case Kwame Geathers decides to forgo his senior year for the NFL.

Johnson would be coming in playing as a Junior so Griffin should not affect his playing time at UGA but the Oklahoma coaches will use whatever they can, to get in to the heads of these young recruits.

Will Muschamp has already gotten into the head of UGA’s commit Trenton Brown causing Brown to waver on his commitment.

Then there is Montravious Adams, UGA coaches attended his HS game just last week. Auburn has long been Adams favorite but UGA is making up ground on both Auburn and Clemson… the chance at signing Adams for UGA has greatly improved. (If Gene Chizik didn’t have a 7.5 million $ buy-out clause in his contract, he would be gone after this year) I doubt Montravious is afraid of competition but scholarships for 2013 are becoming few.

Gaining ground on M. Adams is a long way from getting him and this kid WANTED to play for UGA. Looking at his credentials vs Darius and Clowney, this is just another case of our coaching staff with their heads up their tails, led by CMR!

If you have a choice between a kid who MAY want to play for you and one who WANTS to play for you so bad that he is shutting down his recruitment, the choice should be obvious and would be to most staffs that had a clue!

Bottom line is that CMR in his wisdom has turned away a great prospect in HOPES of getting someone like Henry or Adams.

Where is CMR’s stance now on putting up his “fence” around the state of Georgia and keeping the best players at home??? It appears to me that he would rather hold a scholarship open for someone he MIGHT get like Henry from FL, instead of keeping a young man who IS from GA and wants to play for UGA so bad that he said he was SHUTTING DOWN his recruitment because the decision had been made! Great move Richt! The JUCO kid such a solid commit that he has already been taken off of UGA’s 2013 commitment list by ESPN and Rivals!!!

This is an embarrassment to UGA. This young man committed to the Dawgs in front of his school, friends and family and then told by CMR that he wasn’t wanted…that is BS! If CMR is holding scholarships at this point in HOPES he can sway someone like Henry or Adams, then they should tell the rest of the recruits that are holding offers from UGA that they are no longer good! Then this crap wouldn’t happen and we can do like we did last year and get a half-a** class like last year!

So instead of having a 4 Star commit from Georgia in a position that is vital to the 3-4 defense and has OUTSTANDING credentials from what I have read, CMR has made the decision to let him go to SC because he HOPES to sway another recruit. How asinine!

This is just another reason why UGA will win a NC with this coaching staff and will continue to be looked at as a second-class team in the SEC!!!

@BamaDAWG:

Mark Richt is a class act, all will be worked out… HS coach spoke out of turn… no coach from UGA has stated anything about Kelsey Griffin’s commitment being refused.

Kelsey Griffin is committed to UGA and is rated 4* the #10 DT in the nation, he is exactly the type of kid that UGA wants to recruit, articulate, well spoken, with great character, unbelievable athletic ability for a man his size… why not wait to hear what Mark Richt has to say.

I have heard with 9 early enrollees (January 2013) counting against 2012 class, UGA could sign 34 recruits for 2013. Griffin counts as #29 leaving just 5 schollies available to reach 34. (6 if Trenton Brown decommits)

10 HS players still on the board for 2013 vying for 5 or 6 schollies, who does UGA take:

B Langley CB (committed to USCe)
A. Kamara RB
L. Tunsil OT
T. Crowder OG
K.Priester WR
M. North WR
Toby Johnson DT (JUCO)
M. Adams DT
D. Henry RB

If the kid in question was a 1 or 2 star vs a 4-5 star, I would agree with you. But this young man is a 4 star (same as the JUCO kid that IS wavering and is probably going to FL and Adams is also a 4 star, 5 star by some rankings) so in my mind, the answer should be easy.

Especially if he runs a 4.6 40 at 300 lbs! PLUS he has 3-5 years at UGA, versus 1-3 for the JUCO kid.

Again, in my opinion (for what little good it is), this is just another Dumb A** decision by CMR! And the reason our kids are rarely coached up and we struggle in the first half of games (this year–last year it was the second half of games) against inferior opponents.

The biggest difference between CMR and Saban or Meyer is that CMR coaches NOT to Lose and the great coaches coach to WIN! I am not saying CMR is not a great guy or person. But with him and a lot of this staff, UGA will NEVER win a NC!!! And that is sad, because our talent is as good as anyone’s in the country.

Again, go back to the Mizzou game. Bobo ran one formation almost the entire game with that shotgun and wingback. Everyone in world knew that the stupid sprint draw, that fooled NO ONE, up the middle was coming because it was the only run we had out of it. If Bobo had mixed bit up with some toss sweeps or ANYTHING else, it might have been different.

With the size of our line, we should have been lining up in the I Formation and running it down their throats! Then, in the 4th quarter (I believe) when we got our first lead and Mizzou had punted us to about the 5 yd line, we lines up in the I and Gurley broke one for 40+ yards. Then what happened, Bobo lined back up in that stupid a** shotgun and threw it three straight times! We had to punt! One would think that you would want to run some time off the clock and shove it down their throats (or Good, Old Fashioned “Old Man” Football! But no, that would make too much sense to establish the run with an O-line that is stronger and bigger than the opponents…because we have seen to this point that Gurley, Marshall, Malcome and Samuels have absolutely NO talent! Right. So let’s line up and throw the ball three straight times after our no talent back Gurley just busted a 40 yard run!

Just like telling this 4 Star kid “we don’t want you” because we MIGHT sway another 4 star, it just shows the stupidity of this staff! I don’t know why I am so surprised about it though. It is not like this crap has just started.

BamaDAWG… standing ovation. Great post! As for the star rating, don’t read too much into that. Well at least not at this point that UGA is almost full. They’re are 4* LB’s that have 2* talent in Bama’s 3-4 defense. So I would try and trust the coaches. Additionally, I would imagine they know exactly how many they can take and probably already know who will fill those spots. Many kids have already given the intentions to the coaches but will not go public as they enjoy the game. UGA may be full at his position and this may just be a miscommunication. Then again Richt may just want to look him in the eye when he commits or he doesn’t grade as high on their board.

Again, Thank You.

I am a little confused, however, on some of your points.

I agree with the star numbers and such. Look at our old friend Isaih Crowell. I saw him play in his first game with his new team and I don’t think he had 20 yards rushing on 20 carries. Plus, he kept pulling himself out of the game, complaining with his ankle. And he was a 5* recruit…#1 RB in the country. Unfortunately, that is the main thing regular fans have to go on.

As far as believing our coaching staff knows what they are doing…I definitely have concerns with that statement.

Finally, regarding the remaining 5-7 commitments left to fill, there is no way that UGA knows for certain who those are going to be. Going back to DAWG-GAWN’s list–which is pretty accurate, I see two that I think UGA has a legitimate shot at. Two others are already committed somewhere else and we have as much of a shot at Henry as GT has if being allowed to be back in the SEC! The rest have UGA listed as 2nd to 5th on their list!

Bottomline, if you have an in-state kid who is smart, athletic and as talented as this kid seems to be, why in the hell is our staff not welcoming him with open arms? Because one of those other kids MIGHT switch? That is a JOKE!

Just like another person posted earlier, UGA is losing top recruit after top recruit to Bama, Clemson, FL, FSU and SC! So much for CMR securing the borders and we are pushing a kid who wants to play for us straight into SC’s direction! And if I was this kid after being told by UGA and CMR that I wasn’t wanted, there is no way in hell I would give them a second chance. But we will WASTE time on Henry, who pretty much told us to go screw ourselves after being committed for almost a year!

Yeah, CMR and his staff know exactly what they are doing…

Deals have a way of falling apart too… long way to February!

With the talent on this team, there is NO reason UGA shouldn’t be competing with Bama for titles and damn sure shouldn’t be losing top recruits to FSU (ever been to Tallahassee?), Clemson, SC, Bama, FL or Auburn–ESPECIALLY IF THEY ARE ROM GEORGIA!!!

Again, I ask whether or not that is a legitimate statement or not? If you say it isn’t, then you are NOT a true Bulldog!!!

Lazy, if you can’t back up your DA statement, then jump back in the woods and look after your uncle!

The negative recruiting “you’ll be stuck in a 3-4″ is kind of an odd take. If a 3-4 NT does really, really well in college, about half of the NFL teams will be seriously interested, given the premium that they put on prototypical “Mt. Washington” 3-4 NTs. The $ trade off is that the DE position in a 3-4 isn’t valued that highly. The future looks very good for Jenkins, as well as Jarvis Jones as that skilled OLB/pass rush “end” for 3-4 teams.

Maybe UGA didn’t offer his high school coach any money. Alabama is still paying my high school coach, and I never actually went to bama.

Funny how SOME( not all) UGA fans change their story(tune), spin their story when it looks from the outside that UGA really put the screws to this kid. Talk about honoring a scholarship offer!
If it is academics, or other issues then they should have pre-cluded their offer, but some spin it to turn the negativity to other schools.

After this kid committed on TV something must have happened and I think the truth will come out in a few days , so why speculate. He apparently didn’t understand something about the recruiting process , whether it concerned grade or Georgia’s needs or timing. Give it a few days. No need for all this drama.

Pulling schollys and over-signing it can’t be! Some UGA fans are going to have to get some new material.

Apparently, Bammer(fake Dawg fan) is also lacking in reading comprehension as well as being an idiot. He sounds like he has about a fifth grade mentality anyway. Another fine product of the Alabama school system. Go back and read my post very slowly this time. If you still don’t know why I called you an idiot after that, ask your Mommy to read it for you. Maybe the two of you can work it out. LOL Now I definitely know he’s a Willard man! There are things called facts, of which you don’t have, and yet you feel the need to comment about this situation anyway…Stupid really is as stupid does!

I can’t believe this crap, only CMR could screw up this way, KG is a 4star DT, and a really great kid. What happened?

commitment >noun 1 dedication to a cause or policy. 2 a pledge or undertaking. 3 an engagement or obligation that restricts freedom of action.

It’s time to get a new word for when high school kids “lean” toward a particular school.

Why are grown adults all in twist over this? Wife in bed next to you? There’s you’re next move. Kids wanting a ride? DQ right down the street. Kids in the bed next to you with the wife? Come on the blog. Now I get it. Sorry, I’m a little slow.

Dewnsav… was quoting you a little Doc Holliday from Tombstone. Take 0.0025% of what I post to heart. Just a way to pass the time.

BamaDawg… hang in there. CMR has a plan. I know it must be hard to see it after watching him hand out a dozen schollys to walk on players but I feel certain he has one.

Lazy,

The story did come out moron and the kid committed and it was not accepted by our coaching staff! It must your lacking education for you not to see it in the first place.

Therefore, I guess my Alabama education was a hell of a lot better than yours and your uncles because everything I stated is, was and is always TRUE! Go back to your trailer and find your boyfriend and maybe he can explain the facts of life to you finally. At 40 or so years old, maybe you can handle it by now.

Blackoutanyone?

I hope you are correct. I lost faith in CMR when he had to be forced to get rid of Martinez as DC. If he could not see the problems without having to have someone point it out to him (and that situation was awful, even to Lazy and his third grade education), in my opinion, he should have been gone. That was agonizing to watch and CMR sat back and let it happen!

Again, I hope you are right. I must admit, l am not holding my breath on it though. Only time will tell.

Priceless!

Saban and Alabama MUST wint EVERY game and the NC EVERY year or they are failures. Why? Well they got the program with the most tradition, NC’s recruiting base etc, in the nation going for it and then you go and buy the best college football coach in the nation and maybe EVER….Bama is playing with a stacked deck and should never lose a game and certainly never lose te SEC or national championship….EVER. if they do, SHAME on them. That should never happen. Best football school of all time with the best coach….win it all or take your medicine when you lose ONE game as you SHOULD….

Will you please clarify one thing..,

Are you a Bama fan or Georgia fan? In one post you sound as if UGA can’t be beat and the next one, Bama will win forever!

Just wondering,,,

Guys, might better check on the character of the ga recruiting coordinator before you bash a kid on his decision making ability. A man has his word and that’s it. If the man tells a kid something, he should stand by it. The facts will come out. In the meantime lay off the kid. He is doing and saying the right thing. Heard anything from ga?
