Wait a minute … Kelsey Griffin “is NOT” committed to UGA, per coach

How many more commits will UGA try to get for the 2013 class after landing DT Kelsey Griffin? (AJC)

The coach of 4-star DT Kelsey Griffin told the AJC he "was NOT committed" to UGA on Friday evening (AJC)

Kelsey Griffin’s recruiting took a strange twist on Friday.

In the morning, the 4-star defensive tackle from Mill Creek High School committed to UGA in front of TV cameras.

On Friday evening, Griffin’s high school coach told the AJC that he was no longer committed to UGA.

Here’s what Mill Creek’s Shannon Jarvis told the AJC via text message:

“We are about to load our buses for tonight’s game so I will not be able to call. Please know that Kelsey is NOT committed to UGA right now. I know this may sound crazy, but it is the facts.”

With Friday’s kickoff against Peachtree Ridge fast approaching, Jarvis did not respond another text message asking for further clarification — Did Kelsey Griffin commit to UGA and have a change of heart? Or did Griffin publicly pledge to UGA and later find out that it was rejected by the Bulldogs?

UGA cannot comment on prospective student-athletes, and Griffin was not available for comment on early Friday evening.

Earlier on Friday morning, Griffin sat with his parents at an impromptu press conference at Mill Creek and told reporters from ESPN, Scout and Rivals that he had committed to UGA. It was all captured on video.

“I just decided to commit there; It had been weighing on my heart to commit to the place where I want to be the most … .and it happened to be the University of Georgia,” Griffin told Scout’s Kristen Ledlow on Friday morning.

At the time, it was huge news for UGA, as Griffin is one of the state’s top remaining uncommitted prospects. The 6-foot-1, 290-pounder is ranked as a consensus 4-star recruit and had narrowed down to UGA and South Carolina.

Griffin would’ve been commitment No. 29 for UGA’s 2013 recruiting class – if you’re counting JC offensive lineman Trenton Brown, who is still officially committed to the Bulldogs but lists Florida as his leader. ESPN and 247 sports have already removed Brown from its list of UGA commits, and they both have the Bulldogs at 28.

Now, after the news about Griffin’s de-commitment on early Friday evening, UGA could be down to 27.

The only explanation for this is that the UGA coaches did not accept his commitment. No way the kid changed his mind.

I think the kid realized that he would have to spend at least 3 years in a city that smells like pickled pig feet, pork rinds, and mountain mash. That would be enough to make me change my mind too.

Kelsey’s commitment is just bad timing for UGA at the moment. One of UGA’s big priorities is GA native JUCO Toby Johnson DT 6′ 4″ 305lbs Hutchinson Community College, Kansas is taking an official visit to Oklahoma this Saturday. UGA needs this recruit as insurance, in case Kwame Geathers decides to forgo his senior year for the NFL.

Johnson would be coming in playing as a Junior so Griffin should not affect his playing time at UGA but the Oklahoma coaches will use whatever they can, to get in to the heads of these young recruits.

Will Muschamp has already gotten into the head of UGA’s commit Trenton Brown causing Brown to waver on his commitment.

Then there is Montravious Adams, UGA coaches attended his HS game just last week. Auburn has long been Adams favorite but UGA is making up ground on both Auburn and Clemson… the chance at signing Adams for UGA has greatly improved. (If Gene Chizik didn’t have a 7.5 million $ buy-out clause in his contract, he would be gone after this year) I doubt Montravious is afraid of competition but scholarships for 2013 are becoming few.

Obviously, we don’t need this drama. If he’s that unstable, leave him alone. Let someone else be saddled with all the problems that come with such instability. We’ve had more than our share of such stuff.

Gaining ground on M. Adams is a long way from getting him and this kid WANTED to play for UGA. Looking at his credentials vs Darius and Clowney, this is just another case of our coaching staff with their heads up their tails, led by CMR!

If you have a choice between a kid who MAY want to play for you and one who WANTS to play for you so bad that he is shutting down his recruitment, the choice should be obvious and would be to most staffs that had a clue!

Bottom line is that CMR in his wisdom has turned away a great prospect in HOPES of getting someone like Henry or Adams.

Where is CMR’s stance now on putting up his “fence” around the state of Georgia and keeping the best players at home??? It appears to me that he would rather hold a scholarship open for someone he MIGHT get like Henry from FL, instead of keeping a young man who IS from GA and wants to play for UGA so bad that he said he was SHUTTING DOWN his recruitment because the decision had been made! Great move Richt! The JUCO kid such a solid commit that he has already been taken off of UGA’s 2013 commitment list by ESPN and Rivals!!!

This is an embarrassment to UGA. This young man committed to the Dawgs in front of his school, friends and family and then told by CMR that he wasn’t wanted…that is BS! If CMR is holding scholarships at this point in HOPES he can sway someone like Henry or Adams, then they should tell the rest of the recruits that are holding offers from UGA that they are no longer good! Then this crap wouldn’t happen and we can do like we did last year and get a half-a** class like last year!

So instead of having a 4 Star commit from Georgia in a position that is vital to the 3-4 defense and has OUTSTANDING credentials from what I have read, CMR has made the decision to let him go to SC because he HOPES to sway another recruit. How asinine!

This is just another reason why UGA will win a NC with this coaching staff and will continue to be looked at as a second-class team in the SEC!!!

Bamadawg…. In most instances I would disagree with you and say I trust that the coaching staff has a better understanding of where Adams is leaning. But we are talking UGA here so that really clouds the water. I do disagree that you take the lower ranked kid because he is willing to walk to Athens. If your goal is championships, you recruit the very best and you don’t settle near the end when scholly numbers get tight.

Kelsey was supposed to stay a silent commit but he decided to go public without the coach’s knowledge. This has thrown a monkey rench in UGA’s recruitment of other top prospects. ALWAYS contact your recruiting coach BEFORE you go public with your commitment. When you don’t, you end up with awkward moments like this!

1. You can never have enough DLmen in the SEC
2. I live 10 minutes from this kid’s school-this is a good academic school. This is NOT a problem kid.
3. The problem is Rodney Garner and Richt. This is the type of kid who you want in your program-great motor, good academics, good family. We are too lazy. You sign them all and then worry about it later.

@BamaDAWG:

Mark Richt is a class act, all will be worked out… HS coach spoke out of turn… no coach from UGA has stated anything about Kelsey Griffin’s commitment being refused.

Kelsey Griffin is committed to UGA and is rated 4* the #10 DT in the nation, he is exactly the type of kid that UGA wants to recruit, articulate, well spoken, with great character, unbelievable athletic ability for a man his size… why not wait to hear what Mark Richt has to say.

I have heard with 9 early enrollees (January 2013) counting against 2012 class, UGA could sign 34 recruits for 2013. Griffin counts as #29 leaving just 5 schollies available to reach 34. (6 if Trenton Brown decommits)

10 HS players still on the board for 2013 vying for 5 or 6 schollies, who does UGA take:

B Langley CB (committed to USCe)
A. Kamara RB
L. Tunsil OT
T. Crowder OG
K.Priester WR
M. North WR
Toby Johnson DT (JUCO)
M. Adams DT
D. Henry RB
T, Jones RB (Committed to Bama)

Hey Coach

Your pass defense is ranked 97th in the nation.Your best defensive back is supended and Connor Shaw is not 100% I’d say you should be worried about Missouri because if you play them like you played Vandy it wont just be LSU you’ll be whining about losing to.I’d include Arkansas but you might pull that one out.

If the kid in question was a 1 or 2 star vs a 4-5 star, I would agree with you. But this young man is a 4 star (same as the JUCO kid that IS wavering and is probably going to FL and Adams is also a 4 star, 5 star by some rankings) so in my mind, the answer should be easy.

Especially if he runs a 4.6 40 at 300 lbs! PLUS he has 3-5 years at UGA, versus 1-3 for the JUCO kid.

Again, in my opinion (for what little good it is), this is just another Dumb A** decision by CMR! And the reason our kids are rarely coached up and we struggle in the first half of games (this year–last year it was the second half of games) against inferior opponents.

The biggest difference between CMR and Saban or Meyer is that CMR coaches NOT to Lose and the great coaches coach to WIN! I am not saying CMR is not a great guy or person. But with him and a lot of this staff, UGA will NEVER win a NC!!! And that is sad, because our talent is as good as anyone’s in the country.

Again, go back to the Mizzou game. Bobo ran one formation almost the entire game with that shotgun and wingback. Everyone in world knew that the stupid sprint draw, that fooled NO ONE, up the middle was coming because it was the only run we had out of it. If Bobo had mixed bit up with some toss sweeps or ANYTHING else, it might have been different.

With the size of our line, we should have been lining up in the I Formation and running it down their throats! Then, in the 4th quarter (I believe) when we got our first lead and Mizzou had punted us to about the 5 yd line, we lines up in the I and Gurley broke one for 40+ yards. Then what happened, Bobo lined back up in that stupid a** shotgun and threw it three straight times! We had to punt! One would think that you would want to run some time off the clock and shove it down their throats (or Good, Old Fashioned “Old Man” Football! But no, that would make too much sense to establish the run with an O-line that is stronger and bigger than the opponents…because we have seen to this point that Gurley, Marshall, Malcome and Samuels have absolutely NO talent! Right. So let’s line up and throw the ball three straight times after our no talent back Gurley just busted a 40 yard run!

Just like telling this 4 Star kid “we don’t want you” because we MIGHT sway another 4 star, it just shows the stupidity of this staff! I don’t know why I am so surprised about it though. It is not like this crap has just started.

And also closing the gap every year…….so enjoy it while you can. also I think Georgia can sign 33 to 34 if I understand correctly
