Jay Ellison: Auburn or Georgia Tech for 3-star DT?

Jay Ellison prediction?

Loading ... Loading ...

Auburn and Georgia Tech are the co-leaders for Jay Ellison, one of the state’s top defensive tackles.

The 6-foot-1, 280-pounder from Harris County High School also has South Carolina and Ole Miss on his shortlist.

“Right now, it’s really between Auburn and Georgia Tech,” Ellison told the AJC. “Right now, they are fighting it out for the one spot with me.”

What does Ellison like about Georgia Tech? “I really like the coaches and players. I like the defensive line coach [Andy McCollum], and all the coaches really … it’s like a great atmosphere when I go up there, especially for the games.”

DT Jay Ellison (AJC)

DT Jay Ellison (AJC)

And Auburn? “It’s the same thing. I have a great connection with the coaches. And the players, like Gabe Wright and Jeffrey Whitaker, they welcome me like I’m part of the family.”

This past weekend, Ellison made an unofficial visit to Georgia Tech for the blowout win over Virginia. He got to hang out with some of the team’s freshmen, including Pat Gamble, Lynn Griffin and D.J. White. “It was a great game,” Ellison said. “I thought it was going to be closer, but Georgia Tech really came out and put it to them.”

This weekend, Ellison will make a recruiting trip to Auburn.

And after that? Ellison has not set up any official visits but said he plans to take all five. He has not set a date for his college decision.

Kind of comes down to city or country for most kids that are deciding between Auburn and Tech.

That was my choice out of high school, and I chose Tech. Loved the campus (no, it’s not everyone’s cup of [sweet] tea, but I thought it was a great mix of metropolitan and suburban environs), the academics, and the traditions. I’m pretty sure none of those things are what football recruits look for, though. It’s probably more like, how cool are the kids on the team, how do I feel about the coaches, how soon can I play, what kind of swag do we get set up with, what are the athletic dorms like, and are there enough cool things to do around town? But, in my mind, it’s as simple as this: Auburn’s a quaint place with some good football history and SEC money and swag, but you’re not going to get bored in Atlanta, and you might be able to play sooner.

You’re the first person to mention that they get the pun intended by my handle. My major at Tech was “Industrial Design” (for which Auburn has a nice program as well, I might add), so I’m a Designer and a Jacket…a Designer Jacket. But I probably couldn’t design a jacket to save my life, sadly, I’m no good at cloth products.

Hope GT as we need depth at NT. I like what Green has shown as the backup, but he only has a year left. Gostis is a project and could go either way. I really like the current commit in Commissiong but depth and competition are really needed. Real story is will the spot be there by the time he decides. Corn is coming this weekend and rumor is he is really interested in GT. Not saying he will commit, but if he does that might just do it for GT depending on how the numbers work out.

I’d go to Tech. At least you would have a chance at a division title and get to play for the conference title.

At Auburn, you will constantly be asked by NCAA investigators how to get to Walmart and where is a good place for a haircut.

No need to discuss and compare the value of a degree when it comes to football recruiting. Yes, Tech ranks extremely highly in the Return On Investment of an undergrad degree (first or second in the country, depending on which magazine). BUT – it’s rare that a serious football recruit has the clarity of thought to pay attention to that. They’re too busy being so sure they’ll make it to a long career in the NFL that they’re typically not worried about life after their 30’s or the very likely case in which they don’t make it to the league (or don’t stay long enough to be financially stable for life.)

Smart decisions lead to good situations. Playing football on an in-state team where you also might win your division and get noticed by the league, while also earning a highly valued degree (yes, I mean even one from the Scheller College of Business at Tech) and being able to network in Atlanta is a good situation. It takes a smart decision to get you there – Come to Georgia Tech, Mr. Ellison.

Any kid picking Auburn this year will likely have a new coaching staff by the time he gets there. AU will be 1-3 after this weekend, which will more than likely be a thumping. From this point on they will likely be underdogs to A&M, UGA and Bama, which means they have to beat an improving OM and the trainwreck that is Arkansas and Vandy to be bowl eligible. If they slip on one of those 3 expect the brass at AU to clean house, Van Gorder might leave on his on, at anytime, doesn’t really matter his defense is playing terrible anyway and apparently no one on staff can coach a qb. AU is an absolute mess, and these kids will find out exactly what “all in” and “we are family” means at AU if they go 5-7, which is a very real possibility.

Yep

Huh, take a look at the majority of the comments in this section for your answer. The perception of AU is that you are cheaters. Trooper Taylor, Memphis and J Robinson, cam newton (nothing will change the perception of college football fans – AU got away with it – congratulations), the felony 4, the pool party, where is Robinson therezie? What has happened to your highly ranked recruits over the past few years( many are gone). Much more, but don’t have the time to type…..

Come play in the west and play lsu and alabama year in and year out. Oh wait, yall did have them on your schedule and opted to go to an easier schedule. figures………

i sure am glad gabe wright did not commit to UGA when Crowell did bc then John Jenkins might not have signed with us. Gabe wright has not done anything at Auburn same with a few others that we thought we lost that yr. Glad we got Mitchell instead of Quan Bray too. Sometimes things just work out bc you never know how these kids will pan out. Gabe wright has underachieved big time at Auburn same as his teammate Crowell who did not even make it as UGA.

Nah, they’d rather play tough schools such as Buffalo and Florida Atlantic. What’s funny is even if UGA happened to make to the SEC championship they’d still get left out because of their weak schedule.

When is Auburn going on probation?

That’s like Al Capone saying “You got nothing”.

Auburn is good and hiding the money trail so the answer to your question might be never.

All I pointed out is that the NCAA is back in Memphis again today. Miss St and Auburn are invovled. They never even interviewed the kid at UGA from Memphis.

Again, you can hide your head in the sand and call me names like a child but it does not chnage the FACTS I have presented.
