UGA freshman recruit to meet with NCAA on Friday, says report

UGA freshman defensive back Sheldon Dawson will interview with an NCAA representative on Friday, according to the Memphis Commercial-Appeal’s Kyle Veazy.
Dawson’s high school coach told the newspaper that “Dawson expects the topic of conversation to be about Mississippi State.”
Mississippi State acknowledged in a press release last week that it was investigating “a potential recruiting irregularity” with the NCAA.
For Mississippi State, it’s the latest in a wave of bad news for the SEC school. Last week, The Dispatch reported that there was an NCAA inquiry involving freshman defensive back Will Redmond and a car.
Also on Tuesday, the Jackson Clarion-Ledger reported that Mississippi State has disassociated itself from an unnamed booster for “impermissible contact.”

Dawson’s high school coach told the newspaper that “Dawson expects the topic of conversation to be about Mississippi State.”

When asked to confirm Friday’s meeting between Dawson and the NCAA or the nature or it, UGA spokesman Claude Felton told the AJC, “We cant confirm or deny anything because the University prefers not to comment on NCAA matters, but also the NCAA prefers that schools not comment on NCAA matters.”

There have been rumblings for the past few years about certain “handlers” “street agents” making waves among many of the “disadvantaged” student athlete population in Football and Basketball.
This Memphis deal is not limited to just one school and may possibly affect a couple of others if the current core investigators can prove some issues. I hope it is just one or two roque assistant coaches but this may get real ugly for some schools closer to the Memphis area.

You’re probably right DawginLex, but all I’m saying is if the car in question turns out to be an ‘88 Caprice, well, UGA will be screwed by the NCAA somehow.

You guys have the conference stereotypes all wrong. It is the ACC and Big 10 that get hit with big NCAA sanctions. But they have to cheat to recruit, because the SEC recruits all the thugs who eventually get kicked off their teams due to drug violations. They would have been better off in the PAC12, where there is no such thing as a drug violation, because the drugs are provided test free directly to the athletes.

I just think other fans of other SEC schools pointing the finger is funny.

@Joe – Do not recruit from Memphis. Look at all of the arrest at UGA over the 5 years. Memphis had nothing to do with that. What I see is overzealous Friends of the Program offering money to inner-city kids. I’m glad college football doesn’t exploit young African-American men, oh…….wait

Like I just said, the kid hasn’t played for UGA yet so the chances of Georgia getting in trouble are not great, unless we did something like offer him money. Given the fact that he wasn’t too highly recruited, I doubt the staff was that desparate. We aren’t Auburn or Miami.
