INSIDER: Auburn will take advantage of new SEC rule to entertain recruits at Georgia Dome

  • VIDEO: What’s the best and worst part of the recruiting process? We asked Robert Nkemdiche, Brice Ramsey, Tyren Jones and others in the below video

Auburn will take advantage of a new SEC rule to entertain some of the nation’s top college football prospects at Saturday’s Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game.

Reuben Foster, Montravius Adams, AJ Jackson and Trey Johnson are among the celebrity recruits who confirmed with the AJC that they will make an unofficial visit with Auburn to the Georgia Dome on Saturday.

As expected, Auburn will take advantage of a prime opportunity of a new SEC rule by inviting top recruiting targets to Saturday's game at the Georgia Dome (AP)

As expected, Auburn will take advantage of a prime recruiting opportunity under a new SEC rule to invite top prospects to Saturday's game at the Georgia Dome (AP)

Last spring, the SEC passed league rules that finally gave permission to the home team of a game at a neutral site to entertain prospective student-athletes. It was already permitted by the NCAA. Auburn, which traditionally recruits the Atlanta area as well as any out-of-state school, has immediately taken advantage of the new rule as Saturday’s home team versus Clemson.

“It’s really neat [to be able to bring in recruits], to be honest with you,” Auburn coach Gene Chizik said. “I think obviously, to be able to come to a venue of this sort is really going to be neat for the guys that choose to come. We’re excited. We think it’s going to be a great game to watch for any spectator, certainly any recruit. So we’re looking forward to it.”

Foster is the 5-star linebacker who transferred from Troup to Auburn High School for his senior season and is committed to Auburn. Adams, who is from Dooly County, is ranked as the nation’s No. 1 defensive tackle by several recruiting services and has both Auburn and Clemson among his leaders. Johnson is from Central Gwinnett High School, may be the state’s top prospect at linebacker after Foster’s transfer, is committed to Auburn but plans to visit other schools. Lovejoy tight end AJ Jackson has also stated his intention to sign with Auburn. Kell defensive back Brendan Langley, who is pledged to South Carolina, also told the AJC he may go on Saturday.

What about Friday night’s game at the Georgia Dome? NC State is the home team against Tennessee but has decided not to invite recruits. Said NC State spokesperson Annabelle Myers, “Coach … said that the kids they would invite are playing [in high school games] on Friday night.”

Should UGA change its stance and invite recruits to the Florida game?

To the surprise of many, UGA decided not to take advantage of the new SEC rule to bring in recruits for its annual showdown with Florida in Jacksonville, Fla. UGA athletic director Greg McGarity said it was due to logistical concerns, including the availability of tickets. The state of Florida produces nearly double the amount of D1 recruits as Georgia, and the Bulldogs have a strong presence in the talent-rich state. It is being viewed in some recruiting circles as a gigantic missed opportunity by the Bulldogs. It is difficult for many Florida recruits to make it to UGA for a Saturday game because of the lengthy travel.

Most other SEC schools are expected to take advantage of the new legislation.

OL Brandon Kublanow (AJC)

The top 3 UGA-bound OL Brandon Kublanow has played against in HS: 1. Reuben Foster, 2. Montravious Adams, 3. Nkemdiche (AJC)

WHO IS THE STATE’S BEST DEFENDER? UGA-bound offensive lineman Brandon Kublanow of Walton High School has squared off against most of the state’s top defensive prospects over the last year, and ranks 5-star linebacker Reuben Foster as the best. “He’s an animal,” Kublanow said. The rest of Kublanow’s top five? In order, Foster and then DE Montravius Adams (undecided), both ahead of Grayson DE Robert Nkemdiche (committed to Clemson) at No. 3. “Robert is pretty good, but I think Reuben and Montravius are better.” Kublanow’s former teammate at Walton High School, DE Koty Allen (signed with The Citadel last season) is at No. 4, with probably Brookwood DE Shaun McGee (committed to UGA) rounding out the shortlist. Kublanow and McGee battled in last Saturday’s Corky Kell Classic at the Georgia Dome, which was won by Walton. “I think Shaun will be a great player at Georgia,” Kublanow said of his future teammate. “He’s got good size, and great speed on the edge.” Kublanow said another elite defender may crack the top five when he plays against Auburn 5-star DE Carl Lawson of Milton later this season.

RING, RING, RING FOR EX-FLORIDA RECRUIT: Since offensive lineman Joshua Outlaw de-committed from Florida a couple of weeks ago, the 6-4, 290-pounder has been contacted by FSU, Clemson, Arkansas, Ole Miss, Miami and Vanderbilt. Outlaw broke it off with the Gators because he wanted to visit other schools and Will Muschamp did not approve. “I’m definitely satisfied where things stand now,” Outlaw told the AJC on Tuesday night. “It feels good to have things clear cut and open. This allows me to fully explore my opportunities.” Outlaw hasn’t had any contact with Florida since de-committing, but says they’re still in the running. He would also like to hear from LSU, USC, Oregon and UGA.

WR Marqui Hawkins is "solid" with the Florida Gators ... but wants to visit other schools (AP)

WR Marqui Hawkins is "solid" with the Florida Gators ... but wants to visit other schools (AP)

FLORIDA RECRUIT WILL VISIT OTHER SCHOOLS: Carver-Columbus WR Marqui Hawkins said he is a “solid” commit to the Florida Gators but will visit other schools. He said he will definitely take official visits to Tennessee and North Carolina, and maybe Clemson and Auburn. What about Florida fans worried about the trips? “I mean, they ain’t got nothing to worry about,” Hawkins said. “I just want to experience some other things, do things on my free time, and get out of Columbus. My commitment is solid to Florida. I’m not going to de-commit. I’m just visiting other places. I’m not going to change my commitment.” The 6-3, 208-pound Hawkins missed Carver’s season-opener with a bruised collarbone. While elevating for a ball in practice, Hawkins got flipped and landed on his shoulder. “I was out for five weeks; the doctors released me, so I will be playing this Friday,” Hawkins said.

QB SCORES SKYMILE POINTS: Juwaan Williams, who was QB on Tucker’s state championship team last year, has finalized three of his official visits: He will go to Notre Dame on Sept. 22 for the Michigan game, to Oregon on Oct. 6 for the Washington game, and to Clemson on Oct. 20 for the Virginia Tech game. He’s in the process of setting up a recruiting trip to Florida State, while Vanderbilt has asked for him to wait until January. Every school is recruiting Williams at wide receiver except for Clemson, which projects him at DB. “At first, I was a little hesitant about DB. But when I started to talk it over with my coaches at Tucker, they said I was a versatile guy and could play corner at the next level.”

THE FOOT IN FOOTBALL: East Paulding’s Kamani Thomas, one of the state’s top running backs, said colleges are anxious to evaluate his senior film. The 5-9, 195-pounder missed 5-6 games as a junior with turf toe. “They want to see what I look like when I’m feeling 100 percent, which I am now,” Thomas said. “My foot is healthy.” Thomas said he has offers from Vanderbilt, Arizona State, Ole Miss, Southern Miss, Ohio, Troy, Middle Tennessee State, South Alabama and Southern Miss.

I agree with kublanow I don’t think that nkemdiche is the best he only had four tackles in the game against mceachern I understand he saw some double teams at times but when you are the number one player in the nation you find a way to get it done. To me he doesn’t have that dog in him that a dominate defensive player has. He doesn’t run threw guys he grabs and slang Reuben foster runs threw you and you feel it, I’m just not sold at all

I couldn’t agree more. That was a terrible decision by Greg McGarity. On some things, he is dead right. On others, he is clueless. How can you have a home game in the most loaded state in the Union and not invite prospects? McGarity wants to please the fat cat boosters and make money for the athletic department. But without players, we are nothing. Florida is loaded, and this is a chance for them to make a short trip and see the Bulldog fans out in force every October. I hope McGarity changes his stance here.

Anytime you can get recruits to a Bowl Type atmosphere in one of these games it makes a difference. The Big Programs spend the money and insure the recruits all know of their importance.

So Game Changer I always thought positions were recruited by what the teams needs are. Tell us how you would give scholarships out? Equal number going to blacks and whites? For every 2 white kids give one to a black kid? What would be the effective recruitment to satisfy you? Maybe with this thinking UGA can go back to the 50s and 60s. Would that satisfy you?

Adams has said he wants to play out of state so i dont think we get him. So UGA had a chance to land Foster, Robert N., Adams, Lawson 4 five star players ranked in the top 10 overall recruits in the country and we will not get one. Cant see that happening in other states. First of all no state has ever had 4 in the top 10 but you would think we could get one of them. I know lawson will probably be nothing but trouble where he goes. He will not make it. I know foster has moved to alabama but during the heart of his recruitment he lived in georgia. You would think we could get one. THis yr we have a lot of recruits but the quality of recruits is down from previous yrs. I dont have a problem with 3 star recruits but almost all 3 star have to redshirt to get stronger and bigger thats why that got a 3 star ranking. 4 and 5 star can contribute if they are needed. We are losing so many players after this yr we are gonna be counting on a few freshmen to play next yr. I know there are some 3 stars that play their freshmen yr but not many. I am just a little disappointed in this yrs class bc the state is loaded with top top top talent and we dont have many of the states top players. WE have to land the majority of the top 10 kids in the state and this yr we have dropped the ball big time on that.

Could it possibly be that there are circumstances that the Georgia coaches know that you don’t know ?

I, for one, don’t want Foster. It has been said that Lawson will be trouble; Robert N. may not be that good and even if he is, I wouldn’t want the drama surrounding his recruitment.

UGA just finally got rid of the bad eggs (Dooley) and now the team chemistry is so much better. Why start over to pamper athletes who think they are special?

As far as NCAA eligible players, there are a bunch of them who because they were “eligible” when they played cost their schools vacated wins and championships when it was found out later that they weren’t. Jury is still out on Scam and others in my mind.

Every SEC fan should be happy with this new rule in the SEC. As for the name calling by the GEORGIA fans—-get real, quit making excuses for not winning the NC. What a lot of people don’t understand, AUBURN recruiters are among the ELITE recruiters.Luper and Trooper, know their jobs, they “think and recruit outside of the box” to stay ahead of other teams. They are not “DUMB FORMER FOOTBALL JOCKS”, in fact Luper has his PHD. With the kids of today, lets face it—they want exposure. Let’s face it—a trip to the GA DOME excites a lot high school kids.

As much as I hate to admit it every top college has great recruiters other than the Head coach. It is time that Georgia moved into the 21′ST Century and admit that even though Garner was a great recruiter in the 90’s , Georgia needs a younger more current Recruiting Coordinator who can relate to today’s kids. Garner is a very good coach and a DGD but I would like to see a change in the Recruiting Coordinator at Georgia. It certainly couldn’t hurt.

Everyone who understands the first thing about the UGA/UF game is it is a circus and you want to further complicate the issue with hosting recruits? I personally think we would do a lot better with concentrating on winning and less on next year. The kids follow a winning program, so I am willing to bet we get enough good recruiting from the game without having to take recruits to it.

That being said I also think if we can have some “unofficials” in there, then that would be awesome!! It is a unique environment that every kid can appreciate when they experience it.

GA and FL mutually agreed for neither to have an advantage in alternating years by bringing recruits to Jax.
That doesn’t mean neither team won’t bring recruits to a different neutral site such as a future chik-fil-a kickoff game.

Until UGA starts winning in Jacksonville more regularly, I would avoid taking recruits there like the plague. With the exception of ‘07, I can’t remember a game (even our other victories) that looked like much in the way of a signature game. I would much rather pick an Auburn or GT game, where we often show up well. Heck, I would even take a home game against LSU.
