Alabama is the frontrunner for the state's No. 9 overall prospect (AP)
Alabama is the frontrunner for Greg Taboada, one of the state’s top 10 uncommitted football prospects.
The 6-foot-5, 250-pound tight end from Marist high school also hasn’t ruled out the possibility of following a family tradition and attending UGA.
Taboada is ranked by ESPN as the state’s No. 9 overall prospect.
“I’m just kind of focused on my senior season right now,” Taboada told the AJC. “Alabama is pretty much at the top, with Vanderbilt, Virginia, Florida State and South Carolina right behind.”
Why is Alabama the leader? “I’ve gone on some visits, and in talking with Coach [Nick Saban], it’s a solid program. Their players don’t get into trouble, their players go to school and they don’t have off-the-field problems. It’s just a solid program. [Assistant Chris Rumph] has been awesome, and every time I go up there I feel comfortable. Obviously, you know if you go to Alabama, you’ll have the chance to win some big ballgames, and that’s pretty cool.”
Has Taboada thought about committing early? “When I started the recruiting process, I was hoping I could use my football to help me get a good degree. Obviously, Alabama doesn’t have the highest degree. But then I thought about it, and playing for Coach Saban, with all the exposure you get from playing for him, it’s almost like having a good degree. But I’m still kind of waiting for Stanford a little bit. I don’t want to commit too soon, so that Stanford would that think they lost me if they’re still interested. So that’s what is kind of holding me back.”
Then there’s UGA.
Taboada’s older brother, Ignacio Taboada, played tennis at UGA and finished up his stellar career last spring. Greg really started liking the Bulldogs during his visits to see his brother play tennis, and was hoping to earn a football scholarship. The younger Taboada attended UGA camp this summer but pulled his hamstring while running the 40-yard dash before he could get fully evaluated. The injury also limited his participation the following week at Stanford’s camp.

TE Greg Taboada injured his hamstring at UGA camp before he could be fully evaluated (AJC)
In the meantime, UGA offered another tight end, Thomson High School’s Jordan Davis, who quickly committed to the Bulldogs.
“I was definitely hoping for an offer from UGA,” Taboada said. “It would be cool to play close to home, I love the area, and it would be cool to follow my bother there. But I think they might’ve just been looking for a different type of tight end, and I think someone already committed to them. As of right now, I don’t think Georgia will offer. I haven’t talked with them too much lately, and I really don’t want to be too pushy. So I don’t think it will happen.”
What if UGA did decide to offer? “It would be up there at the top, no doubt,” he said.
A little background on Greg: Both of his parents are from Spain. He is a late bloomer to football, giving the sport a try as a seventh grader. He has a 3.7 GPA and will likely major in Business if he goes to Alabama, or Computer Science at Stanford.
Taboada hasn’t set up a timeline for his decision: “I was going to wait until halfway through the season and send game film to Stanford and see what they think. If I still don’t have an offer from them, and no other schools like Georgia pop up, I will probably commit around that time.”
Taboada prefers to play tight end in college but is open to the idea of playing defensive end, too.

Not exactly a ringing endorsement for Alabama academics. It sounds like he basically wants to major in Sabanology. Not to bash Bama as they’re a good school but unless you have serious NFL aspirations, take the Stanford offer if you get one.

I guess you’re like the rest of your generation young man you like to blame everyone else for problems except yourself. The “off-the field” problems are not the coaches fault, theres this little term called personal accountability that I guess they dont teach in school anymore.

UGA doesn’t need any tight ends. Good luck to where ever he decides to sign. UGA needs to just stock pile linemen on the O and D. No such thing as having too many of them. I’d say we are pretty much set at running back and QB (with Hutson, LaMay, Brice Ramsey) for at least one recruiting cycle. I’d like for one year concentrate on the big uglies and sign as many as we can, recruiting ranking be damned.

“Obviously, Alabama doesn’t have the highest degree.” Very surprised to hear that from a recruit who is thinking about committing there. Everyone knows that college football has little to do with academics, but it is rare when a high schooler admits it.

Bummer players don’t get in to trouble because the police dept has Saban on speed dial. ” Gnome what you want me to do with this kid smoking pot and driving THIS TIME?” Funny comments regarding Bmmer’s lack of academics. “Alabama OBVIOUSLY doesn’t have the best academics but playing for Saban is ALMOST like going to a school with good academics.” Hilarious……. what a put down. UGA doesn’t have room for him no – one TE is all they need.

Trolls will always say how UGA lets all of these recruits go outside of GA, but there is a difference between 1) “We want him”, 2) “It’d be nice to have him, but not a need.” and “We’ll pass.” No one can sign them all and GA has so many upper tier recruits that if we ditched the entire team and signed 85 freshmen, we still couldn’t get every single one of the good ones. Just let the trolls vomit their stuff…

mixed signals….He say’s he hopes they offer….Then say’s they ( UGA) would be right there on top. I think 90% of Georgia commits meet with Richt privately while on campus at camp or whatever and the deal is struck there. Yes, there are exceptions of players we really want like everyone and you have to put the offer out there. don’t think this young man fits that category.

Michigan is a great school for academics, so is UNC and Virginia. I hope it works out for him and Stanford gives him a call. I wouldn’t be suprised that if UCLA were to offer he would take it.

I believe Greg is being looked at as an athlete by some schools. Not just a TE. Bama might already have two TE’s but they could be looking at Greg as an OLB.
I was actually kind of hoping UGA would offer. Still I like Davis. Probably more upside at the TE position than Greg. Much more athletic.
For people questioning his ranking just look at his offer sheet. Bama, FSU, and others. That tells you more than the rankings. This is a quality prospect.

I will not name names because of legal issues…but back in 85-87 I did some good drugs with a few UGa football players. The players were friends/Frat Bros(Omega’s) of my high school friend’s roommate. His parents bought a few condos for him and his sisters while they were at UGa. A few Omega Football players came over pretty often to get a brain bubble bath or zoom. Typically in the Off-Season but a few times during the football season. I am sure not much has changed. Some get caught and in trouble. Some get caught and don’t get in trouble. Some just don’t get caught.

the kid seems to have his wits about him as he goes through recruiting. I suspect Alabama has told him he has to wait a while. But I like that he’s keeping options open. If he doesn’t end up at my school, that doesn’t mean he’s made the wrong decision.

SEC, Duron Carter was, according to coaches and folks who watched practice, the VERY BEST of a long line of talented receivers, and the gap was so big they didn’t award a runner-up trophy. Julio-good, if that gets the point across. And yet he never played a down.
Just as he did in Columbus, he wouldn’t follow the rules. He wouldn’t go to class, and there was some discussion of weed. He was suspended, then booted so resoundingly by Saban that he had “hang time” before he landed somewhere in south Florida.
So much for the notion that the players expelled from the Alabama team are the ones who lack talent. Carter had plenty of that. He also didn’t have sense. You need more of the latter if you want to last at Alabama.

Thirdly u guys make the obscene statement that bama covers up along w the police bama players getting in trouble. Well heck if that were true than how did callaway get arrested? If Taboado is that smart he should go to Stanford and plan on what he will do after Football. So many great receivers in college don’t ever make it to the Pro’s because that position is so demanding and it seems this kid is pretty good but he needs to be great if he plans on a Pro career.
I will say this his explanation of why he likes Alabama sound just like all he did was repeat what Saban and Smart has drilled into his head every time he go’s for a visit. In fact haven’t we heard that exact reason from half a dozen recruits who Alabama is trying to convince to go to Alabama.
Unless he really shines this year he will never get an offer from Georgia. We have way too many others in the pipe line who we are watching or have already made an offer to.

Sounds like a solid kid who knows the value of an education, which unfortunately is the exception these days. Seems pretty blunt on going to Alabama for the academics but then again are any of your Tide buddies bragging on what a great degree thy got. Also, I hope the kid knows that just because he’s not heard of any off field issues that it doesn’t mean that they don’t exist. After all, don’t think your career in law enforcement would be enhanced too much if you involved any football team member for anything that would embarrass the team. Of course this is assuming that he’ll still have an offer when the time comes.

What a fantastic act of journalism in this article. The kid states that he likes Alabama with several others under consideration, none of which are ugag. So our esteemed writer spends the rest of the article focusing on how he can convince the kid that ugag is the place for him should they offer down the road. Why not focus on bama and the other schools instead of spending over half the story on a school that hasn’t even offered and is not under consideration by the player. It’s as if the writer went to journalism school at ugag. What a minute. Maybe I am on to something GIVEN THAT EVERY RECRUITING ARTICLE IS FRAMED THE SAME WAY AS THIS ONE IS FRAMED!!!!!!!!!

August 28th, 2012
7:16 pm
Why would the AJC be trying to convince Taboada that UGA is the place for him, when the kid is already pretty convinced? Wouldn’t it be more logical to ask the writer to convince UGA to take Taboada, since that is the holdup on him committing to the Dogs?

Hey Adman. If the location of the newspaper is so important in your eyes as it relates to objective, impartial journalism then why doesn’t the writer pump Georgia Tech in all of his recruiting articles instead of ugag? After all this is the ATLANTA Journal. Not the ATHENS Journal. Let’s face it. There is a clear agenda here and there has been for many years as it relates to uga and this sports section and in particular the recruiting coverage. If you can’t see that then you are either blind or stupid. Btw I am not a Bama fan so your trailer park comments aren’t very relevant. In fact I find it hilarious that any ugag fan would have the audacity to throw “trailer park” insults at any other fan base. Something about throwing stones in glass houses but you’ve probably never heard of that one either.

If this kid doesn’t think a degree from Alabama is a good degree, he’s a moron and should go somewhere else. I hope the Alabama coaching staff sees this article and pulls his offer. They don’t need a kid who’s immature enough to pop off like this in the press. There’s a reason Saban doesn’t let the press have access to freshmen; this kid is Exhibit A.
