Brice Ramsey: UGA’s “QB of Future” stars in opener

What’s the latest with QB Brice Ramsey and his commitment to UGA? Will he visit any other schools or just the Bulldogs? And what does Brice’s coach think of the highly-touted recruit? Check out the video above.

Which 5-star OL prospect and 4-star RB is Ramsey actively trying to recruit for UGA? He talks about it in the video.

UGA fans in the Atlanta area got a glimpse of the team’s “QB of the future” this weekend.

Ramsey, who committed to UGA last summer before he even started a high school football game, starred in Camden County’s 42-0 win over Peachthree Ridge in the Corky Kell Classic at the Georgia Dome on Satuday.

The 6-foot-3 Ramsey didn’t get many chances to throw out of Camden County’s Wing-T offense but he made the most out of the opportunities. Ramsey connected on 6 of 8 passes for 132 yards and 3 touchdowns. He also had another TD pass go through the hands of wide receiver.

Maybe most surprising was that Camden County, perhaps trying to take advantage of Ramsey’s quarterback skills, lined up in the shotgun formation during several offensive series.

Camden County also has another senior committed to UGA, JJ Green, who plays both halfback and defensive back. Green rushed for 89 yards on eight carries.

Sounds like Jennings had a good game against Newnan, but Tray Matthews stole the show. Jennings had a couple of costly turnovers that ended up swinging the game over to Newnan. Happy that Tray Matthews reaffirmed his commitment to UGA, and happy that Brice Ramsey is coming to Athens as well. Sounds like both had a great start to their Senior seasons…

Brice Ramsey is a star on the rise.

Ramsey was a true steal on the recruiting trail by Richt.

Left everyone else scrambling to make up ground.

Brice Ramsey will have Georgia in the National picture for as long as Richt let’s him Quarterback. With him enrolling early if he has learned enough by September 2013 I hope he will be starting. The only problem will be if Murray decides to stay another year. I hate it for LeMay but he has taken too long to develop and Mason is way down the Quarterback meter when comparing him to Ramsey. This kid will be one of the best Quarterbacks that Georgia has ever had. We need to play him as soon as he is ready.

What makes Ramsey special is when he fades back to pass he checks out the entire field and go’s to the guy open. Murray on the other hand has a primary receiver and many times can not see someone else wide open because he has tunnel vision and he is too short. If the primary receiver is not open by the time he find someone else he get’s tackled for a lose.

7576Dawg,

What do you mean LeMay has taken too long to develop? And what’s this about Mason being way down the meter compared to Ramsey? Didn’t Mason set some GA high school passing records?

Were both of these guys supposed to sit Murray considering the offensive numbers he’s produced? If Shockley couldn’t take the starting job from David Greene then there’s no way these guys were going to beat Murray out of the spot.

I haven’t seen Ramsey do much but beat a down Peachtree Ridge team. I hope he’s the real deal but he hasn’t accomplished anything on the high school level compared to the 3 current UGA QBs in this discussion. Let’s let it all play out in practice and on the field before we trumpet the next great thing.

If someone thinks Ramsey will somehow jump Lemay in the QB pecking order, then you are smoking crack. Why else would Hutson Mason want to transfer? This job is Lemay’s to lose in 2013, bet on it.

Why is UGA recruiting a kid who runs the wing T as their “qb of the future” to run their pro style offense??? Their aren’t many high school defenses who can defend a passy happy offense so if this kid is being touted as the next qb at a pro style major D-1 college…I’m confused.

Richt beat out big time programs for this kid. He was recruited from his performance at camps where college coaches watched him. He also threw for 3 TD’s Sat night on 6-8 passing and was a participant in the Elite 11 just held.

That’s why UGA recruited him

Superknightdog- The problem wasn’t that Shockley wasn’t good enough, it was that David Greene was on his way to becoming the all time winningest qb in college football. Shockley won the SEC in his only year as a starter, and only lost 1 game (WVU) in which he played that year. It’s a hard argument to make but I would’ve liked to see what UGA could’ve done with 2-3 years with him at the helm. Beggars can’t be choosers I suppose.

I agree with you about Lemay and Mason though.

Clarification

August 27th, 2012
3:18 pm

DawginLex- I guess a better question then is why does his high school run that offense with a player like that?

Mason and Lemay

August 27th, 2012
3:19 pm

If Mason thought Lemay had the job for 2013 locked up he would have already transferred, in fact he considered it and then decided to stay and redshirt this year in hopes of being Murray’s successor.

Mason is still the clear #2 over LeMay. If Murray got hurt in game one, Mason would be the man and LeMay would be the backup.

Camden's offense

August 27th, 2012
3:22 pm

They run the offense they do because Herron has won big with it. Until switching to Region 1, I think Camden went 12 years with zero region losses. The fact that they are throwing it 8-9 times a game is like “Air Camden” compared to Herron’s previous teams. He has opened it up to the extent he has due to Ramsey’s unique talents.

Sly- I don’t see Murray going pro early either unless he cuts down on his turnovers and starts having big games against big opponents. I would like to see the dawgs get Lemay some quality time this year. However, I don’t get a vote.

Coach Herron is not going to change his offense for 1 player. He is throwing more now than ever because of Ramsey but still is a running team coach. I like the fact that this kid is run first. If you look at UGA, we are stockpiling offensive linemen, recruiting multiple running backs and a QB who is run first and can throw too.

Ramsey sounds like a very mature and intelligent young man….and talented. But a current 3-star recruit out of Florida who is committed to USF outperformed him at the Elite 11 competition. You just never know about QBs. But you would think the head coach at his high school would change his offense for this young man……as not doing so is hurting both Ramsey and the team. No way I run that offense with this young man on my team. Maybe the QB is smarter than the head coach down there.

I think Tunsil is a done deal for Georgia. Will play right away there at LT. Would not for the Gators with D. J. Humphries in Gainesville for 4 years and Chaz Green at RT for 2 more years. Not so sure about Kamara however….unless he wants to play WR at Georgia.

Tampa

The fact that Ramsey even won a regional Elite 11 event is amazing considering he throws the ball 95% of the time. He is still learning and doesn’t have the advantage of being in a pass happy system. He will redshirt at UGA and play in 2015 after Mason leaves.

Jury on Brice still out

I saw Brice Ramsey play QB for Camden County the other night in a blow out. Peachtree Ridge is a quality program or was. Could not guage how good their d backs and d linemen really are.

Brice had 6 completions with 3 balls for pretty long TDs. He faced 0 competition, however. Can he move quickly? What is his foot speed? Can he move around well in the pocket?

A full season will tell us more. Seemed in the post game interview, to be very mature, verysharp and articulate. Great !!

Kamara isn’t afraid to compete and he’d likely be the only RB taken in this years class for UGA. If Bama is his alternative choice, then I’d say UGA is the place for him to be considering the depth in Tuscaloosa. Hope Tampa is right about Tunsil…

poopdawg…the two wing back set is a common formation that wing t teams use. We tend to assoicate the wing t with just the 2 backs in the backfield (hence the “t”) and the one wing back. Good wing t teams run about 10 different plays but out of 4-5 different formations, with the 2 wing back set being one of them. Doing this gives you a solid 50 plays to run, making it tough for opponents but simple for your guys running it.

Ramsey will be another Lemay. He will ride the bench for 2 or 3 years until UGA finds someone else. It will take him a long time to develop coming out of Wing T offense.

Guys. there is a reason that Saban went after Ramsey pretty hard….Every scout that has seen this kid has nothing but superatives to say about him…Anyone hasn’t seen him throw in camps doesn’t know squat about how to evaluate talent…enough said…and Tampa Gator…Kamara will be a dawg…at least that is what everyone close to him is saying, but I don’t count any of these commits until NSD..too much can happen…
