How does Mark Richt keep up with them all? UGA has 28 commits -- and counting -- for 2013 (AJC)

UGA officially picked up two more football commitments for its mammoth 2013 recruiting class on Monday.

But it’s not exactly good news for the Bulldogs.

Both of the new 2013 commitments, DT John Atkins and DE Leonard Floyd, are 2012 UGA signees who failed to meet college entrance requirements.

Both players reported to Virginia’s Hargrave Military prep school on Monday, coach Troy Davis confirmed to the AJC.

And now that both are officially enrolled in prep school, both are officially being counted as members of UGA’s 2013 class.

Atkins and Floyd both plan attend one semester of prep school and then report to UGA in January. Beginning next season, they will have five years of college eligibility to play four. Prep school is like an extra year of high school.

UGA now has an eye-popping 28 commitments, which is the nation’s largest class. The Bulldogs expect to sign around 34 in February, with 9-10 enrolling last year and counting toward the 2012 class numbers.

This is PERFECT for puppy fans, you get to count the stars in 2 different recruiting classes. February thru August is the only football season you ever win. Your schedule is embarrassing, play 1AA if you’re afraid to play anybody! What was the last good team you beat? LSU in 2005, lol.

I’m not trying to bash UGA by any means, but I’d like to hear from the folks who have consistently chastised coaches of other programs for “over signing”. Appears to me that UGA will be doing EXACTLY what those same people have been harping about the past few years. Explain to me the difference, other than your allegiance to all things UGA. This is exactly why I have always refrained from being too critical of Saban, Spurrier, Nutt, etc. One never knows when their program may have that many scholarships to offer and you end up eating crow. Correct me if I’m wrong on this, folks.

@ Beast – there is no similarity in what UGA is doing compared to what Saban and the rest do regularly. Since you are so uninformed. Saban over recruits by offering scholly’s that he doesn’t have and seemingly backdoors several recruits that he deems of lesser value by urging them to gray shirt or walk-on. UGA happens to have an abundance of available scholly’s going into next year because of transfers, dismissals, etc… so just because the signing class size will be larger, there is no promising of scholly’s that aren’t truly available (I.e. Saban, et.al.)

I’m not one to defend UGA, Beast, but as I understand it there won’t be a player currently on the roster forced off to make room for the incoming players, nor will any of the current commitments find himself without a home if UGA signs each commit and they all qualify academically.

If I’m wrong, I’ll certainly admit as much, but that’s the way I currently understand it.

And “beast from the east” – the difference between our ‘13 class and what bama does is that we are way under our alloted scholarship limit. We can do it because we have room. Bama is full and over signs On technicalities and then drops injured or underperforming players who thought they had the word of their coach.

Beast you are wrong on this. UGA only had 69 players on scholarship to start the season. They have lost a bunch of players to discipline problems. Most team have between 80-85 to start the season. This means Georgia is very thin. Over signing means signing more than you have scholarships for. They have plenty of room and it does not bode well for them after this year.

I hear what y’all are saying, but I still don’t see the difference. I can’t recall any REAL examples of grey shirting other than one or two over at Bama and I believe they were told up front before NSD. I don’t know of any other cases, other than folks just throwing stones at other programs. Am I just being naive?

The trick for UGA will be for all the players that they are currently expecting to enroll early to actually do so. As long as they set appropriate expectations with all the recruits, then UGA is not acting unethically (in my opinion) here.

Beast, UGA has 69 on scholarship, that allows them to sign over 25 only signed 17 last year. Right now it’s looking like 8-9 guys will will EE so they back count ato last years class. 3 from last year EE so on paper UGA only signed 14. Basically if you can sign enough EE you can sign over 25 to get up to 85. It’s crazy but I hope I helped.

I get the numbers and the 85 limit, but I also thought there was limit of 25 per year. Guess that number is not set in stone since they’re allowing all schools to backfill and count against LY with EE’s. Doesn’t make much sense to me to impose a limit of 25, but allow you to make up for past mistakes.
My point was the whole glass house thing. I recall many people bashing the 3 coaches I mentioned earlier, but it’s a different story now when UGA has more than 25 spots to fill. Don’t take it personally unless you happen to be one of the ones that were throwing stones.

The definition of Commitment must be a a word in Mandarin.
承諾

Lesson for high school recruits. Learn what a word means before you do it and if you do it live by it. commitment noun 1.the act of committing. 2.the state of being committed. 3.the act of committing, pledging, or engaging oneself. 4.a pledge or promise; obligation. 5.engagement; involvement.

Let’s see which other programs offered these two academic misfits:

- Georgia Tech
- Florida
- Auburn
- Clemson
- S. Carolina
- FSU
- Tennessee
- Alabama
- Miss State
- Purdue

It’s funny, we never hear as much about academic casualties from these programs; I wonder if they are just more creative at getting their players through the process?

_______________

The last paragraph of the Article is kinda self-explanatory:

“UGA now has an eye-popping 28 commitments, which is the nation’s largest class. The Bulldogs expect to sign around 34 in February, with 9-10 enrolling last year and counting toward the 2012 class numbers.”
___________
That last sentence where it says counting towards 2012, that means they are not in school now and therefore UGA is playing at less than full strength, so by signing more than 25 and having them enroll in Jan. they count towards 2012 and allow them to get back to full strength.

That is nothing like over signing, i.e. what Bama does.

In Bama’s case they have returning players + recently signed LOIs that will be entering school in August and in Bama’s case they have OVER 85 players “committed to Bama” and at that point Bama has to get down to the 85 number by a certain date, maybe Aug. 1, and that ’s where Bama comes up with all the Mysterious Medical Hardships, and transfers to Troy & UAB and guys leaving the program for other unknown reasons.

In Bama’s case they are over 85 schollies for a 5 month period of time from NSD in Feb. until the cutoff date where they can only have 85 guys “in the program”.

This is considered over-signing because the LOIs that haven’t reported yet (still in HS for their last semester) have to get released by Bama (i.e . under Bama’s control); and the guys in school at Bama also have to get released so Bama has a 5-6 month stretch where they have had more than 85 guys on scholly (under control of Bama’s FB program) and then from that number (as high as 95 guys in past yrs.) they then choose the best 85 guys to start fall camp with.

This is what everyone has complained about as giving Bama a huge advantage over other schools, combine that with Coach Nicky’s greatness as a HC and you get 2 MNCs in a 3 yr. time frame.

There’s a web site out there that will explain it clearer, google over-signing and see what pops up.

In summary, UGA is light on schollies and are trying to get back to full strength while schools that over -sign have too many guys under the “control” of their FB program and have to get back down to 85 by some cutoff date (maybe Aug. 1).

The other programs are usually smart enough to recognize the recruit won’t qualify before national signing day. UGA just assumes they can qualify anyone, and 99.99% of the time they are right.

@ beast from the east. Bama has more medical redshirts than the rest of the SEC combined. LSU and Alabama have signed 30-35 more players over a five year period than either Florida or Georgia. That gives them a very clear advantage and some peolple would like everyone to plat by the same rules.

Brainiac (CMR/UGA Fan For Life)

Only a thoroughbred FOOL would compare UGA’s current recruit signing with those of other schools(Bammy in particular) who gamble that some won’t qualify and some may become members of the “Grayshirt Brigade” made famous by the 8th Dwarf, Sabie, Apparently the NCAA has no problems with what Sabie does because every fan except Bammy fans try and hope to cause Bammy and Sabie some kind of misery 24/7!!!!!!!!!!

UGA had 17 recruits signed in the 2012 class so they can sign 8 more to that class so long as they enter school in January. That would bring the 2012 class up to 25 for a team total of 75. That still leaves UGA 10 players under the team allotted 85 so the 2013 signings can add 25 more PROVIDED at least 15 of the surrent recruits leave, or exhausts their eligibility before the 2013 class is signed. That should be no problem with the seniors, those leaving early for the NFL and OTHER various attritioning!!!!!!
