Alabama acknowledges 27 NCAA secondary rules violations

Alabama acknowledged 27 NCAA secondary rules violations by the school’s athletic department over the past year on Tuesday, according to the school’s website.

Nick Saban (AP)

Nick Saban (AP)

Fourteen of the violations had to do with impermissible contact with recruits, either by text message or phone call.

The men’s basketball program was most frequent violator with six violations.

What about Nick Saban and the football program? It was reported with four violations, including: a coach sending an impermissible text message to a recruit’s father (penalty was 30 days of no contact), a coach sending a Facebook friend request to two prospective student-athletes before the permissible date (coach had to de-friend them on Facebook and not allowed any correspondence for 60 days), a coach provided a recruit an impermissible document, and a current student-athlete got a scholarship check before it was certified.

These violations are small potatos, especially those concerning the football team. Definitely no “missing man formations”. By the way… Nick Saban= page views- Newspaper math!

Okay, this is about as newsworthy as you going to the bathroom. Newspapers that cover a major college program have a standing FOIA request for any correspondence pertaining to the NCAA and violations. So, the Tuscaloosa paper did the same thing that the Knoxville News, AJC, Gainesville Sun, Jackson Clarion Ledger and any other paper does and got the response from their standing FOIA and wrote a story. I think if you check, probably 20 to 30 secondary violations (which includes such obscure BS as pocket dialing a recruit) is pretty normal for any major college program. So, you take the Tuscaloosa News report, grind it a bit and you have your story for the day. Come on man, go do some real recruiting coverage …. this is of no interest to nobody …

Only one reason why this story is newsworthy: Nick Saban’s name in it. Every School has secondary violations and as long as they are handled promptly within the program, the NCAA stays out of it. Saban does a very good job of disciplining his players, unlike other programs in the SEC: Aub-Dyer, UGA-Crowell and now LSU-Mathieu.

This offened you, does it? I’m guessing that you had no problem with the 5 articles on Richt’s pocket dialing of somebodies dad last year? Not that any of you Bama guys would have ever made a smarmy comment in one of those.

Ah, so Coach Saban doesn’t kick any players off the team, that proves he is a better disciplinarian. Got it. (unless Coach Saban does do it, then it also proves he is a better disciplinarian.)

That missing man formation voilation was such a blattent disregard to the rules, it had to be explained and it still left folks wondering what that rule was. Calling before it’s time is pretty straight forward. And very small potatoes.

It’$ just $econdary violation$, nothing to see here move on. How do you get access to a scholarship check before it’$ time? Must be hard to keep up with all the checks being handed out. Auburn uses ca$h, lol…

All I can say is WOW! After the giant swing and miss by MC on the Reuben Foster story, he rebounds with this brilliant piece about SECONDAY violations at Alabama. I look forward to his enlightening blog entry when UGA, USC, UT and AU report their secondary violations. Wait….no I dont because it is not news. MC….your obsession with Nick Saban is getting creepy.

JB, Saban/Alabama pretty much the same thing here. Being a Bama grad from north Atlanta and all I ever hear is the UGA this UGA that “THIS IS OUR YEAR!!” and nothing but trash about Alabama. But everyone hears similar things from fans of other schools. MC is just taking the easy way out and copy/pasting a story to get out of the work involved in actually writing one.

Unodawg, each program did the right thing by letting those players go. I was referring to this definition of discipline: behavior in accord with rules of conduct; behavior and order maintained by training and control.

Dawg Whisperer….Are you over the age of 12? If it gets BAMA fans riled up you are all for it? Good lord. Its funny how MC is doing his job in an blog post like this but when he writes an article about Saban recruiting GA, UGA fans get upset for giving Saban/Alabama too much publicity. Amazing how that seems to work, huh?

Nothing fishy about Saban. He’d never oversign or use a medical redshirt. In Tuscaloosa if a cop tries to pick up the wrong player it just may be the cop who gets kicked off the team.

They missed an important violation…

Falsifying high school transcripts so a kid and get into Alabama. This has been going on with them for years. And yes Auburn does it too.

How about a little investigative journalism by the AJC for once????…. stop prowling the “open access records” and put some boots on the ground. Auburn and Bama are so crooked anyone could put a article together regarding recruiting. All you have to do is go to Toombs Co, Ga and ask some questions.

Sources also tell me the freshman RB at Auburn is finished there and is not eligible. The teacher in Memphis has already admitted forgery and been fired. Auburn will skirt somehow.

IF SABAN WASN’T SUCH A POS HE WOULDN’T GET THE HATE THAT HE DOES, PLAIN AND SIMPLE! I KEEP HEARING ALL THIS TALK ABOUT AUBURN PAYING IT’S PLAYERS, WHICH I BELIEVE SOME ARE AND HAVE BEEN PAYED BUT COME ON GUYS JUST GO OVER TO TUSCALOOSA AND TAKE A GLANCE AT HALF THE PLAYERS’ CARS! I DON’T KNOW IF ANY OF YOU GUYS REMEMBER THE SPECIAL ESPN DID ON SABAN AND THE ALABAMA PROGRAM SEVERAL YEARS AGO! HOW DO YOU EXPLAIN THESE KIDS DRIVING AROUND TAHOE’S AND SUCH ON 22 OR 24″ RIMS WHEN THEY COME FROM ECONOMICALLY CHALLENGED HOMES! I KNOW SABAN IS “YOUR” COACH, BUT WHEN A MAN IS SO UNETHICAL IN HIS DEALINGS HOW COULD A DECENT HUMAN BEING SUPPORT THESE ACTIONS! MAYBE IT’S TIME FOR YOU BAMMERS TO TAKE A HARD LOOK IN THE MIRROR AND REEVALUATE WHO YOU LOOK UP TO AND WHAT KIND OF EXAMPLE YOU ARE SETTING FOR YOUR CHILDREN!!!
