There’s a new tape out on Shaquille Johnson, who may be the best dunker in Georgia basketball history.
The first video on Shaq, that you can see here, got more than 2.3 million page views.
I’m not sure if the new one is better, but it is against better competition – a lot of the slam dunks were in games during Milton High School’s run to the Class AAAAA state championship.
Johnson is an Auburn signee, and we can’t wait until this season when the college basketball world finds out about him, if they haven’t already.
What do you think after watching both videos? Is Shaq the best out of Georgia? Is there anybody close? If so, please state your case. Surely, we have some old-timers who saw Darrin Hancock, Jeff Sheppard, Kenny Walker, and Herb White.
But how can 2.3 million page views and counting be wrong?

I have seen jeff sheppard, shaq johnson and kenny walker but hands down Darrin hancock is the greatest dunker to grace this state.

He’s good, but it’s hard to say he’s the best. Lots of other great dunkers in the history of this state.

Josh Smith wasn’t/isn’t bad. And he’s got an NBA dunk contest trophy to prove it…

Lt. Morris of the Sandy Springs PD is really hell with a doughnut and a cup of coffee. I’d have to say he is right up there with the best. He has the waist line to prove it too.

Brent Petway from Griffin High School was a beast in the early 2000s. Was a prolific dunker at Michigan, the D-League, and currently in Europe.

The only way people would know anything about an Auburn basketball player is if he got caught shaving points. Otherwise, welcome to basketball obscurity Shaq.

Lots of people are going to sleep on Jeff Sheppard, but that kid could fly.
First varsity game as a freshman, he wins the tip, takes the pass from a teammate, flies down the court and rises up over everyone to throw it down.

Jeff Sheppard gets my vote.
When Sheppard graduated from McIntosh high school in Peachtree City he held the state record in the high jump at the time. Plus he also won Mr Ga Basketball so he just wasn’t a dunker. Sheppard also gets bonus points because he is white. You know that old saying that white men can’t jump. Sheppard could jump out of the gym!!!!

Al Newman of Camden County back in 1974. Guy would do a one handed dunk have the opponent cut his legs out from under him, land on his hands and then walk on his hands back to half court. Amazing stuff And the referee would wave off the dunk because in 74 it was illegal. After the games the opposing coaches would ask him to put on a dunking show. True story.

Dunking was illegal during his time at UGA, but during his stint with the Hawks it was said the other NBA players would watch him in warmups. Wilt Chamberlain supposedly once referred to him when asked about dunkers (and I believe Wilt just mentioned a white kid from the Hawks). Herb’s was with the Hawks at the beginning of the Pistol Pete Maravich era, the greatest basketball showman I have seen in my lifetime.

Who Rock??? Hancock…and it’s not even close. Jumped OVER Tinch in the championship game at Georgia Techas a sophomore (with four fouls). Tinch is still looking around, trying to figure out what happened. Greatest dunker I’ve ever seen. And, yes, I’ve seen Walker, Shepherd, Petway, and Chris Morris.

Jeff Sheppard could jump out of the gym but so could Herb White.
Legend has it that you could put a dollar bill on top of the backboard and Herb could jump up there and make change.
Terry Fair wasn’t bad either. That 1978-1979 SW Macon team was the best I ever saw. Had 10 players get D-1 full rides

I went to high school in Clayton County and we would go to the other high school games when Hancock was in town. That guy was unbelievable. Don’t forget Joe Ward. I believe he went to Griffin too, but I might be wrong. I think Joe ended up at Clemson. He was fun to watch. When the team came out on the court, they split into aisles on both side of the lane and Joe ran out with two balls and dunked them both. Great memories for a starry eyed CC kid. Too bad I was white and couldn’t jump.

John Havlicek said it best – it’s only two points
I’ll take 20 + wins a year at UGA over a dunking exhibition as
long as I’m alive and as a 40 + year season ticket holder for the
roundball program, my life expectancy is probably a bit shorter.

“Herb White would have left this clown grabbing air.”
Herb White….(wow….a blast from the past when white boys were just learning how to jump and dunk….does anyone remember than dunking at one time was against the rules?) Herb was a perfect example…even back then…..that the ability to supremely dunk a ball does not convert into the ability to consistently put 2 points on the board for “a team.”
