Missy Franklin to UGA? (AP)
The face of U.S. Olympic women’s swimming may attend college at UGA.
Missy Franklin, who is the darling of the 2012 Summer Olympics after winning four gold medals, told NBC’s Bob Costas on Sunday night that she will turn down millions of dollars of endorsements to realize her dream of swimming for a college team.
When Costas asked which colleges she was considering, Franklin replied “Cal-Berkley, Georgia, USC and maybe Texas.”
Franklin’s mention of the Bulldogs sent UGA fans on Twitter into a frenzy.
The 17-year-old Franklin is a rising senior at Regis Jesuit High School in Aurora, Colorado. At the Olympics, she also set the world record in the 200-meter backstroke. She talked about the decision to remain as an amateur with Costas:
“I have always wanted to swim in college. I love being a part of team. It is so important to me. A lot of people think of swimming as an individual event, but there is such a huge team aspect behind [it] in just knowing that you have the support of so many people behind you. And you know they’re there, and they’re cheering you. I think that’s so special and college takes that to a whole other level.”
What are your thoughts? If Franklin signed with UGA, would you go watch her in a swim meet? Please post below.

Yes. Would definitely catch a meet when in Athens during swim season. It’s funny that the schools she mentioned are ones that have heavy influences on the US Swim Team. Hopefully her friendship with Allison Schmitt will help her choose UGA.

Love to have her but Cal is the team to beat. Much of the success of this year’s women’s Olympic team is given to Cal’s coach. I hope Jack can get her here, but Cal is the up and coming program. Go Dawgs!

UGA has a great swimming program, and she would do very well here. I don’t think it would cause many people to attend meets, though. We’ve had plenty of gold medal swimmers over the years, and attendance has changed much. Heck, Jack was the 2008 Olympic coach. Still, would be nice to have her here.

First and foremost, yes my family and I would go see her, schmitt and vreeland swim. UGA has had an impressive women’s team for years. Second, nh gamecock, why do you find it necessary, or even acceptable to post on a topic, sport, and blog that has nothing to do with you? Do your parents know you are using the computer at 2:18 am? What is ftbsll? Please report to your parole officer immediately and stop pissing me off! Thanks Cock.

I think Missy made the common mistake of confusing “pool” with “cesspool.” Once she learns what a slimy place UGA is, she’ll diss UGA and choose a real school with real student-athletes, not the dummies who go to UGA.
Don’t forget: There’s a reason why UGA is known everywhere as The Cesspool of the South.

Actually “Sess Poole,” if you’d get out of your parents basement once in awhile, you might realize that only pathetic little tech fans with a “little brother” complex and self esteem issues refers to Athens that way. Any time I see that phrase, it’s a dead giveaway that it was typed by a pencil-neck geek who doesn’t know what it is like to even speak to a live girl without first having to give them their mother’s credit card number. I guess life’s a b*tch (and so are you) when even your World of Warcraft imaginary elven girlfriend is embarrassed to be seen with you in the Land of Mordor, or whereever the h*ll you spend your cyber time. Walk outside and get some sun, you’ll feel better…

it’s really simple..if she’s serious about getting a respected. quality education, she goes to Cal or Texas…if she is interested in swimming, she goes to Cal or Texas…no way she should go to UGA…the constant losing is embedded in the athletic department…at UGA, losers are developed…

Some of the UGA haters are just, wow. I understand some of this stuff on the football blogs, but here it does not make any sense. We should all be proud/pleased that she is considering a Georgia university. If she had said she were considering Tech or Bama, and not UGA, I would root for her to go to one of the “neighbor” schools.
Regardless, way to go Ms. Franklin! You represented the USA so well.

“If she had Tech on her list I would tell her the same thing.”
If she had Tech on her list we’d all be outside looking at all the pigs flying in the sky and not on the internet talking about her right now. Big time athletes like Missy Franklin have absolutely no interest in a joke half azzed athletic program like Georgia Tech. They are winners and champions and they want to go where they can win and win big. I’ve been following the Olympics and I haven’t heard Missy Franklin make too many crybaby sore loser excuses when something doesn’t go her way. Therefore, she probably wouldn’t be a good fit at Tech.
Georgia Tech=JOKE.

We should be proud that she wants to attend a mediocre university where athletes get arrested more than they excel? That doesn’t make sense. She is america’s sweetheart now. It would be a shame if she ruined that and tarnished her career.

Good grief, people. Everything is not about football and Good Clean Old Fashioned Hate. UGA is not its football program, or the kinds of people it recruits for its football program, thank goodness. It has actually transformed over the past few decades into a school that you have to be a better than average student to get into, and pretty studious in order to graduate with a degree. (The Board of Regents made a strategic decision to let other state-funded schools be the ones that try to accept everyone, and UGA’s academic rep has risen accordingly.) I personally give the edge to Cal, but UGA has a top five swimming program, its degrees are respected and Athens is a pretty cool place to live. She could certainly do worse.
I like GT as well. It’s academic offerings are top-notch, though limited, and its swimming facility is a former Olympic venue, of course. That said, its swimming program isn’t nearly as strong, and unless she’s planning on engineering, a place like UGA offers more choices. Can’t we all get along?

She’d be a fool to choose UGA over Cal. Period. UGA cannot even hold a candle – it’s a joke by comparison. Not only is it better for swimming, but also with educaton. UC schools in general are far superior UGA.
