Florida QB to play at Georgia State

QB Oshay Carter

QB Oshay Carter

Georgia State picked up a commitment at QB, despite the fact that he’s never visited the campus.

Oshay Carter, a 6-foot-4, 230-pounder from Jackonsville, committed to Georgia State over Florida International, Troy, Rice, Tennessee State and Florida A&M. He was also being recruited by Central Florida as an “athlete.”

“Georgia State was one of the better offers I had left, and I wanted to go ahead and make my decision now so I don’t have to worry about it my senior year,” Carter said. “I’ll be visiting in August, and that’s only two weeks away. I’m pretty sure I will like it. Atlanta is a nice city.”

Carter knows Georgia State’s coaches because he worked out for them at a summer camp last month at Camden County High School. Carter already had an offer from Georgia State before the camp, but decided to participate anyways.

“I got to spend some times with the coaches, and I really liked them,” Carter said. “I talked to [WR Devonte Washington, who is also committed …

That was the number of commitments for each school, respectively, from their final summer football camps over the weekend.

But before we go there … did you see what Reuben Foster did to show his loyalty to Auburn – only one day after de-committing from Alabama? Click here.

First up, UGA. With all those Bulldogs fans heartbroken over Reuben Foster (ranked as the nation’s No. 1-ranked inside linebacker), UGA made up for it by picking up a commitment from the nation’s No. 3-ranked ILB. Go here. He’s from Indianapolis – UGA’s biggest name from Indy since … Lars Tate.

Kell High School has two DBs that UGA has targeted, and the Bulldogs landed one of them at “Dawg Night.” Actually, the kid committed to Mark Richt a week before, but kept it a secret until his mom could see Athens. Click here.

Meanwhile, Georgia Tech is putting the finishing touches on its 2013 recruiting class. The Yellow Jackets picked up …

QB Damon Mitchell commits to Georgia Tech (UPDATED)

Georgia Tech took the right angle in recruiting one of New Jersey’s top college football prospects.

QB Damon Mitchell of Cedar Creek (N.J.) High School committed to Georgia Tech after attending Yellow Jackets Football Camp on Saturday. The 6-foot-3, 205-pounder was also considering Iowa, Wisconson, and Rutgers, among his 18 football scholarship offers.

He was the second commitment of the day, along with Fayette County WR Antonio Messick.

Mitchell was ranked as a 3-star and No. 29 overall prospect out of New Jersey this year by 247sports. Many schools liked Mitchell as an “athlete.” Georgia Tech was one the first schools to offer Mitchell – and they made it at QB, his preferred position.

Last year was Mitchell’s first playing QB on the varsity level, with him rushing for 1,000 yards and passing for nearly 900 yards. He earned a lot of accolades for his physical style of play at safety.

“Georgia Tech was one of the first to offer at QB, and that …

WR gets first offer from Georgia Tech, quickly accepts

WR Antonio Messick earned his first scholarship offer at Georgia Tech on Saturday.

And he accepted on the spot.

Georgia Tech now has 13 commitments for its 2013 football recruiting class after QB Damon Mitchell committed earlier in the day.

Messick is a 6-foot-3, 195-pounder from Fayette County High School. He was virtually unknown on the recruiting radar because he had only attended two camps prior to Saturday – Virginia Tech as a freshman and Georgia Tech last year.

Georgia Tech liked what it saw the second time around on Saturday.

“They told me to come meet with [Paul Johnson],” Messick told the AJC. “Coach Johnson said he would offer me, but I would have to get my GPA up. I need to do better in two classes. I’m eligible for the NCAA, but I’ve got to buckle down on my grades this year for Georgia Tech … nothing but A’s and B’s.”

Messick said he was clocked at 4.65 seconds in the 40-yard dash at Georgia Tech on Saturday, and his fastest-ever time was 4.49.

“I committed to …

WR-DB Brandon Facyson has a 3.9 GPA and plans to be a heart surgeon (AJC)

WR-DB Brandon Facyson has a 3.9 GPA and plans to be a heart surgeon (AJC)

After a rough morning on Saturday, Brandon Facyson had a happier finish to the day.

The DB from Northgate High School committed to Virginia Tech over Georgia Tech, Missouri, Ole Miss, North Carolina and Wake Forest.

On Saturday morning while at Virginia Tech, Facyson was rushed to a nearby hospital ER after having difficulty with breathing, eating and swallowing. Facyson was diagnosed with a abscess in his throat area and was given a shot of antibiotics.

“It just came out of the blue,” Facyson told the AJC. “I didn’t think it was anything serious but then it started affecting everything else. We went to the ER, which I was glad about. Because if I had waited later, I would’ve probably had to get [the abscess] drained.”

After spending 90 minutes in the hospital, Facyson was released and went directly to Virginia Tech camp and committed to coach Frank Beamer.

“I’ve always liked Virginia Tech,” Facyson …

Harris held offers from Troy, Colorado State, Delaware and the University of Buffalo and was drawing heavy interest from multiple schools.

New UGA DB commit Quincy Mauger with his mother

New UGA DB commit Quincy Mauger with his mother

Quincy Mauger surprised his mother by publicly committing to UGA before the start of Friday’s “Dawg Night” prospect camp.

Mauger secretly committed to UGA coach Mark Richt a week ago, picking the Bulldogs over Central Florida.

The 6-foot, 197-pound safety from Kell High School made it official with his commitment after driving early with his mother to Friday’s Dawg Night and meeting with school officials.

“Coach Richt was very happy,” Mauger told the AJC. “You know, I kind of made a pre-commitment a week ago. I just wanted to surprise my mom today. I had been doing my research. I told Coach Richt that I wanted to be a part of the Bulldogs family, and make it a big surprise for my mom. It worked out great.”

Later after the completion of Dawg Night, UGA picked up another commitment — Tim Kimbrough of Indianapolis.  He’s ranked as a 4-star and the nation’s No. …

Did you see what Reuben Foster did out of loyalty to Auburn?

For all the UGA and Alabama fans holding out hope that 5-star LB Reuben Foster may change mind again?

You may want to start focusing on another elite prospect after what Foster did on Friday.

The nation’s No. 2 overall college prospect “inked” his commitment to Auburn.

One day after breaking Alabama’s heart, Foster went out and got a gigantic Auburn tattoo on his forearm that you can see by CLICKING HERE (Note: It was tweeted out by AuburnSports.com’s Justin Hokanson)

Now if a super-sized tattoo isn’t a commitment to a college, what is?

That’s about as close as you can get to signing scholarship papers – which is still about six months away.

Do you really think Reuben Foster would get tatted up like that for Auburn and then go to another college? That tattoo makes him a “done deal” like no other, right?

Then again, Chester Brown got a tattoo when pledged to UGA last year. But it wasn’t a UGA …

Tolando Cleveland, a speedy cornerback from Hillgrove High School, committed at Georgia Tech camp on Friday night.

The 6-foot, 180-pound Cleveland also had a football scholarship offer from Mississippi State, and was scheduled to go to Wake Forest later this weekend. Cleveland is commitment No. 11 for Georgia Tech’s 2013 recruiting class.

“Georgia Tech is a good place for Tolando,” Hillgrove coach David Ironside told the AJC. “I’m sure being close to home helped Georgia Tech, and having two Hillgrove players [QB Synjyn Days and LB Jabari Hunt-Days] already on the team there.”

Ironside said he was informed of the commitment by Georgia Tech assistant Brian Bohannon. “They’re really excited about Tolando. We felt like Georgia Tech would be a good fit all along. When Tolando went to camp on Friday, he felt the same way.”

How good of an athlete is Cleveland? We asked how he compared to Kenyan Drake, the AJC Super 11 …

Both colleges also had camps last month, with each “discovering” players that earned football scholarship offers.

Rico Johnson, a wide receiver from Swainsboro High School, committed on the spot to UGA after being offered at Mark Richt Camp. At Georgia Tech, Florida defensive back John Marvin committed to the Yellow Jackets a couple of weeks after a camp offer.

“You do learn a lot about a kid at these camps, and how he’ll compete,” Richt said. “You know, there’s going to be the Michael Bennetts of the world. He shows up, he kind of matches up with some of the best DB’s on our recruiting board, and he has a field day, you know? It …
