Robert Nkemdiche, who is committed to Clemson, visited the Ole Miss campus with his parents on Sunday, according to multiple media reports.
What was the purpose of the trip? Nkemdiche declined interview requests to reporters at Ole Miss, but it was likely he was there to meet with his older brother, Denzel Nkemdiche, who plays in the defensive secondary at Ole Miss.
No big deal then, right? Just a family vacation to visit with family?
But then 247sports.com Keith Niebuhr tweeted something that caused a little panic among Clemson fans:
#Clemson 5-star commit Robert Nkemdiche has arrived at the #OleMiss football facility
Niebuhr also later tweeted that Nkemdiche met with the Ole Miss coaches.
Ole Miss coaches?
Ole Miss is considered to be the only serious threat in luring away Nkemdiche from Clemson. His parents – and the brothers – have previously expressed heavy interest in them playing together on the same college team. Ole Miss has also offered two of Nkemdiche’s best friends, DB David Kamara and DB Ryan Carter.
Nkemdiche has repeatedly said that he was going to visit Ole Miss to see his brother, and he will likely return this fall for a game.
Now what’s the good news for Clemson? Nkemdiche made an unofficial visit to Clemson on Friday. Kamara and RB Wayne Gallman (a legit 4-star RB) are already committed there, while another former Grayson teammate, QB Nick Schuessler, will join the team as a preferred walk-on (after being released from his football scholarship at Mississippi State).
Ryan Carter also visited Clemson this weekend, but was not offered a scholarship. Carter told TigerNet’s David Hood that the Clemson coaches are still evaluating him and still interested.
Nkemdiche has expressed a wish — but NOT an ultimatum – to play with Carter at Clemson because they’re best friends. He recently told the New York Times, “Of course I would want to play with [Carter at Clemson]. But if it doesn’t work out, I’ll still go to Clemson.”
That’s a pretty strong endorsement from Nkemdiche about Clemson.
UPDATE: After this picture tweeted out by Robert Nkemdiche’s brother with both in Ole Miss football jerseys created a stir, Robert addressed it on Twitter by saying:
“I went to visit my bro so all those media trying make a big story about my visit please calm down”
What do we think? Because Robert is the nation’s No. 1 prospect, it’s news anytime he shows up on any college campus that is not Clemson, especially when he meets with coaches and takes pictures in opposing jerseys. With that said, there will be rumors and speculation until signing day, just like there is with any elite prospect. Get used to it, and expect it to continue until signing day. It is what it is. My take of it all? At this point, I would be shocked if Robert Nkemdiche did not sign with Clemson.
